A sacrifice must be made...

They say it took one hundred magical beings to defeat the first Arcanist. Great care was taken to ensure the secret to his malevolent power died with him. Now the brutal reign of the Arcanist has become little more than a scary bedtime story. And yet, the descendants of his loyal followers are sworn to find a way to bestow his dark magic upon another. If they succeed, they’ll unleash a new terror upon an unsuspecting world.

Desperate to save those she holds dear, Jen joins a coven of blood witches to infiltrate the castle where her friends are being held. Yet the farther she ventures into her façade, the more she risks losing herself to its alluring darkness. With the arcanist growing stronger by the day, the only spell that can stop the oncoming wave of blood and war comes at a price. With love on the line, and fear in her heart, can Jen battle back the evil ravenous to consume her?

Magic Sacrificed is the sixth and final book in the Urban Fantasy series, Rise of the Arcanist, featuring dark witches, vampires, elementals, and more. It is a New Adult spin-off of USA Today Bestselling author Elizabeth Kirke’s award-winning More than Magic series. If you like your paranormal with a dash of thriller and characters you'll fall in love with, you'll want to grab the edge-of-your-seat conclusion today!

Rise of the Arcanist is a complete six-book serial. You do *not have to read the original More than Magic trilogy to enjoy it.*

Lynn's Review

Quick rehash for anyone not familiar with the series – It takes place 5 years after the More Than Magic Trilogy but you do not have to read those to start this 6 book series. I recommend it for context and because it’s a great series too.

In Rise of the Arcanist, non-magics and witches are going missing. The non-magics are never heard from again while the witches are disappearing for 6 months at a time. There is no evidence of where they go or how they survive because there’s no activity on their bank accounts and MES files. After stumbling onto this pattern, Jen, Thomas, Mariana, Ember, Char, Danio, and TS are tasked with investigating the disappearances.

Book 1 – lays the groundwork
Book 2 – 3 words: A FREAKING LABYRINTH!
Book 3 – Kirke tries to kill the entire cast!
Book 4 – Arena Fights! I now have more grey hairs. Thanks, Kirke.
Book  5 – This installment was so heavy. All the feels. I AM NOT OKAY!

And now we have made it to the final installment. I feel like I should have won a prize for making this far. Elizabeth Kirke is killing me and not so softly.

“Help us, Jennifer. You’re our only hope.” (Like what I did there?)

OH. MY. GAWD. Tums is acceptable as a reading snack, right? It is up to Jen to destroy the Arcanist. Jen who hasn’t been a witch that long. Young, inexperienced, and working alone. Elizabeth Kirke is killing me! My anxiety was through the roof.

Stomach ache - check
Chest tightness  - check
Sweating - check
Eating Tums like candy - check

In true Kirke form, Elizabeth delivers the reader an intense, kindle gripping chapter from one of the guys' POV, and then in the next chapter she goes to Jen. You see what is going on from her POV which is sometimes from the sidelines. Insightful? Yes. But absolute agony! No doubt Kirke sat back with an evil grin plastered on her face sipping coffee and enjoyed every excruciating moment!

The epic battle lasted for chapters. Chapters people! This is why I need Tums. I had a death grip on my kindle for 4 long hours. I couldn’t put it down. I had to know how it would all end and who would be left standing. In the end, I was not disappointed. Mentally exhausted, overwhelmed, and still chewing Tums, but I survived.

In spite of having neither magic nor a clone, Elizabeth manages to write, format books, and dabble in design, all while wrangling two young sons, a dog, and a husband. She's the author of the award-winning, urban fantasy More than Magic series, the award-winning and USA Today Best-Selling, paranormal romance Curse Collectors series, and usually has a few more projects up her sleeves. When she isn't writing or designing, Elizabeth can be found knitting, gardening, baking, or looking for lost sippy cups.

A few highlights from her bucket list include visiting Wales, Easter Island, and Japan; learning a second language; and coming across a total stranger reading one of her books.

The nastiest vampire in Covenant just got served—a restraining order.

Biggs and Myer is the first all human law firm to take on inhuman cases. They’re in a race against a blood moon, wielding both mortal law and magic, as they fight to avert a ritual that will make a local vampire all powerful.

Winning is survival.
Failure is certain death.
Neither vampire nor human can afford the latter.

An ancient prophecy states whoever holds the white hummingbird, holds the power of the sun. Or will the vampire succeed in unleashing a brand of terror the world has never seen?

Vampire dead?

The sweet taste of victory quickly sours for the Biggs and Myer team. Someone or something has broken into their office and destroyed everything but their safe room. What were they looking for? It’s hard to decipher from the ruins. The only clues the vandals leave behind are a crystal box and an envelope with a wax seal. It’s not long before the seemingly harmless items reveal their nefarious purpose, as secrets within the team are exposed.

Biggs and Myer enlist the aid of hunters and their Immortalem liaison, in an effort to put a face on this invisible foe. As they battle poltergeists and dark magic, a key to stopping what could be the equivalent to the apocalypse is brought to light. A power without a category in the Otherworld, and one of their own possesses it. Will they figure out who holds this power before it’s too late?

Most writers choose the endings to their stories . . . most writers are not Weavers.
Laney Holden is a freshman at Madison College whose life goes from normal to paranormal in a matter of seconds. When the antagonist in the book she’s writing shoves her down the stairs at the subway station, she learns she is a Weaver. Weavers bridge the narrow gap between fantasy and reality, bringing their words to life.
Laney soon meets William whom she also suspects is a character from her book—one she’s had a mad crush on since her pen hit the paper. But he’s in danger as her antagonist reveals a whole different ending planned for Laney’s book that involves killing William. Laney must use her writing to save the people closest to her by weaving the most difficult words she will ever write.

Picture
Most protagonists are heroes confined to the pages of a book . . . most heroes are not Watchers.

When Laney sends William home to be healed by his father, she thinks she will never see him again. After all, his home is in colonial Massachusetts in the story she wrote last year. But when William’s words and actions mysteriously begin to appear on her page, she wonders if she’s lost all control over her characters and their stories.

William will fight through the war around him, again and again, to reach the woman he loves, going against her desire to keep him safe. With the Gate Keeper on William’s side of the page working for The Wanderer, a woman determined to eradicate the Weavers, he must find a way to keep head-strong Laney out of the book, even if it means working with his archenemy, Jonas Webb.

Dagmar of the Northlands Description

From Albedo One Magazine Contributing Editor and double Aeon Award Longlister John C Adams comes a delightful fantasy romance featuring brand new heroine Dagmar Strongarm of the Northlands. 'Dagmar of the Northlands' is edited by professional editor E S Wynn-Rubsam and features a powerfully evocative cover from Fiona Jayde Media. Join Dagmar as she raids the Island of Orkna and falls in love too.
When her stepfather Konung Thorlak of the Northlands dies, the jarls rally round Dagmar's half brother Njal and make him their new ruler. Dagmar is disturbed by their ability to do so, when Thorlak fell at Njal's own hand.
The new konung orders a raid on Gortah van Murkar's island territory of Orkna to deflect attention from criticism of his rise to power and his treatment of his sister Yeen. Dagmar puts her yearning for romance with close friend Frakkok Warmhearth to one side long enough to join the raiding party, but her sister Ragnhild's pregnancy from their mysterious house guest Jon, rumoured to be the human form of the Northlands' Sea God Grunn, is also weighing heavily on her mind. Dagmar's thoughts often drift back to her homestead, Barnahus, the aptly named House of the Women.
It isn't long before Njal is proving himself unfit to lead, and the Men of the North are running amok. Dagmar and her cousin Magnus Broadchest step up, leading the raid on the crofters of Orkna to plunder whatever pitiful treasure the islanders have hidden away. They also do their best to rally the Men of the North's allies to attack the island's capital, the towering stronghold of Castle Longhope, before Gortah can get wind of their arrival and send reinforcements to hold this distant outpost of his massive empire.
Dagmar longs to return home and begin a relationship with Frakkok and to ensure that Ragnhild comes safely through the birth of her son. First, she must stiffen the resolve of the Men of the North to fight as a disciplined band within the coalition of forces the Gods have amassed to assist the Northlanders in taking Castle Longhope. With Magnus injured in the earlier raid, and his wound festering, returning home to Barnahus seems further away than ever for Dagmar.
Meanwhile, in his opulent capital Zwaarstad, Gortah awaits the return of his wife Queen Dextra of Aspatria and her much younger other husband Lord Ludwig Berg. The king and queen have been apart for a year following the death of Dextra's baby son, Crown Prince Aelred of Aspatria, but Gortah has formally demanded her attendance at his fiftieth birthday celebrations, amid continuing speculation in Murkar and Aspatria about the stability of the royal marriage.
Just as Gortah hopes to celebrate Dextra's return in peace, the Eirans gather an immense warhost and ride for the border with South Eira, Gortah's possession across the Silent Sea. The commander at Fort Belshan sends urgent word that reinforcements are needed, and Gortah's youngest son Prince Eugene leads those forces into battle. However, Eugene's thoughts are clouded on and off the battlefield by tempting visions of the King of Eira's youngest daughter, Princess Emer o'Eira.
Is the delightful and playful spirit who visits Eugene in the night hours at Belshan a true likeness of Emer in beauty and good nature? Eugene becomes more determined than ever to meet the princess in person and find out. But Emer's father Domhnall o'Eira is determined that any match with the Murkan prince will be with his eldest daughter, Briana, even if it means breaking her betrothal to childhood sweetheart Chieftain Jarlath o'Cruach.
The return of Benedict Dartelend gives Gortah the thrill of seeing his old lover again after thirty years, but it is tinged with sadness and regret that Benedict has come home to Murkar after decades of ill health to say goodbye. Gortah's old adversary for Benedict's affections Theydon Kleermaker travels to Zwaarstad with Benedict, but after so many years of estrangement and tension, Gortah is surprised at how quickly Benedict's passing brings them closer together. He begins to consider whether to agree to Dextra's suggestion that each of them take a new lover as part of their reconciliation.
