Once the groceries were stored in their rightful places, Camilla handed him napkins and silverware. âWill you put them on the table? Then grab the salads from the fridge.â
As instructed, he moved to the dining room. âNice flowers on the table. Who sent them?â
Jared called out.
âLetâs share a bottle of red wine tonight,â she hollered from the kitchen. âPick your favorite from the rack. And you know where to find the glasses.â
Obviously, she hadnât heard him.
âWine is open,â he called out a few minutes later.
When she appeared in the doorway to the dining room, he poured dark liquid into both glasses and offered her one. They clinked their glasses together.
She sipped. âHmmm, thatâs nice. Dry and fruity.â
Taking the glass from her, he deposited it on the table. âAbout these flowers,â he said.
âThereâs a card here.â
âAre you fishing for a compliment? You know who sent them.â
âKnow?â Jared asked. She wanted to play a guessing game?
âOkay, I understand.â She stopped and made a slight bow. âThank you, darlinâ, for the flowers. I shouldâve said that the minute I saw you, but youâ¦sort of distracted me. Theyâre lovely, and I adore you.â After blowing a kiss in his direction, she went to the stove where she placed sliced bread on a plate with a small dish of butter. âTake this, please. Iâll ladle up the gumbo.â
âHoney, I love you bunches, but I didnât send the flowers. I bought you a gift, but itâs still in my truck.â
Camilla froze.
