Jodi B Stone - Author & Illustrator
of the Savannah Story Series.

Picture
Savannah really wants to dance in the Nutcracker. However, she is very disappointed in her first practice and it leaves her doubting herself. At home she drifts off to sleep and is visited by her dolls and the Nutcracker from her magical dollhouse. A ballerina bear, a fairy, and a Nutcracker show Savannah to not give up on her dreams. They remind her to practice and work hard to achieve her dreams.

This a great life lesson for young children. I love that these stories instill confidence in kids.

Reaping a Pain in the Axe - Stacey Rourke

Picture
History knows me by many names. Nyx, the Goddess of Night. Lilith, the Lady of Darkness. Selaphiel, the fifth angel of God. But the course of my life has been determined by my greatest mistake. I opened the gate and allowed Lucifer to fall. Booted from Heaven for my sin, I serve my penance as a reaper. By collecting history’s most twisted souls, I work to one day earn my ticket home.

Case #664

She took an axe and gave her mother forty whacks, and now... Death is coming for Lizzie Borden. Is she innocent? Guilty? I don’t know or care. Reapers have gone missing on their hunt to harvest the soul of the notorious axe murderer and I can’t afford to let my guard down. Scythe gripped tight, I’m marching into the past to deliver final judgement to Lizzie’s doorstep.

Borden may have a creepy ass rhyme, but I’m an ex-angel with nothing but time. Her father got forty-one whacks, now it’s time she learns reaping is the real pain in the axe.

Review

Rourke's sharp tongue and quick wit lends a hauntingly poetic, albeit humorous, prose to her new series, Fear the Reaper.

The veil is lifting and Nyx is finally seeing things a bit more clearly. (It's about time!) Lucifer is up definitely up to something wicked. In Reaping a Pain in the Axe, Nyx is faced with the challenge of reaping the soul of Lizzie Borden. Desparate to see the good in people, Nyx just might lose her head, literally.

I'm so glad these novellas drop every 30 days because that ending left me with far more questions than answers. Wowzers!

Magic Awakened: a More than Magic serial

(Rise of the Arcanist Book 3) - Elizabeth Kirke

Picture
Clear waters, pristine beaches, and the bones of human sacrifices…

"Part fantasy, part mystery, all awesomeness" - 5 star review from award-winning book blog, 2 Girls and a Book

They say it took one hundred magical beings to defeat the first Arcanist. Great care was taken to ensure the secret to his malevolent power died with him. Now the brutal reign of the Arcanist has become little more than a scary bedtime story. And yet, the descendants of his loyal followers are sworn to find a way to bestow his dark magic upon another. If they succeed, they’ll unleash a new terror upon an unsuspecting world.

On the surface, it looks like a tropical paradise, but the island is hiding a sinister secret: it’s teeming with blood witches. Brought there against her will, Jen knows that she has to escape and warn the magical world about what she has learned. Staying means certain death, but trying to escape looks just as lethal.

Magic Awakened is Book Three in the Urban Fantasy series, Rise of the Arcanist, featuring dark witches, mermaids, werewolves, and more. It is a New Adult spin-off of USA Today Bestselling author Elizabeth Kirke’s award-winning More than Magic series. If you like your paranormal a little dark and creepy, take a vacation with Magic Awakened today.

Rise of the Arcanist is a six book serial, with each installment releasing a month apart. You do *not* have to read the original More than Magic trilogy to enjoy it.*

Elizabeth Kirke is trying to give me a heart attack! In the latest installment of Rise of the Arcanist, Magic Awakened, Kirke literally tried to kill off the entire cast. The only thing that got me through was knowing there are additional books coming and someone has to be in them. Kirke knocks up the intensity level with each book in this series. I'm already a nervous wreck. How will I make it the end?

The Death of an Enemy, Bk 5 - Amy Richie

Picture
With Lindsey as an official suspect in her murder and Clark still mad at her for getting Laney arrested, Avery is forced to make friends in the most unlikely of places. While closing in on the killer is exactly what they want, it has some serious consequences that even Avery Lewis might not be able to escape.

Oh. My. Gosh.

How can you leave me with a cliffhanger like that? This installment answered so many question but left me with so many more. I flew through the story in less than an hour (it's a novella). The secrets are coming into the light and I cannot wait till the next book.

Ghost from the Grave - Carolyn Ridder Aspenson

Picture
Contrary to what many people think, most ghosts aren’t all that chatty. They like to pop in and out and leave cryptic messages that take forever to figure out.

Take the groundskeeper at my son’s lacrosse park: I know he’s trying to tell me something, but his mysterious messages and finger-pointing are impossible to understand.

And when my son’s lacrosse teammate goes missing, I know that ghost knows something. But getting him to talk about it is harder than getting my teenager to unplug from his video game!

Just as the puzzle begins to take shape, I start to realize that the situation is even worse than I had thought.
And then my own son disappears.
Now it’s all-out war...
Because nothing can stop a mother from saving her child.
If you like Southern paranormal cozy mysteries, you’ll love this stand-alone cozy mystery!

In Ghost from the Grave, we see a whole new side to Chantilly. She goes into full momma bear mode when one of her son's lacrosse teammates goes missing. With the help of her friends and the ghost of a groundskeeper, Chantilly tries to solve the mystery before it strikes at her own front door.

Y'all there is scene where Thelma pumps a shotgun one handed and that alone is reason enough to read this book! Thelma is a total badass! Who knew?

The Chantilly Adair series is Steel Magnolias, The Golden Girls, and Ghost Whisperer rolled into one sweet laugh out loud paranormal mysetery series. Aspenson creates a quaint town filled with eccentric characters and I want to move in immediately

The Book of the Blade by Eric Asher

Picture
A forbidden magic. A hidden world. Two mages journey to a realm not meant for mortals.

The magic needed to save Damian requires three coins. One of which is from a world not their own. Thankfully, Cornelius, an elder blood mage, knows the way.

After passing through a Seal between worlds, Beth and Cornelius realize traversing the strange new realm will require the help of a Sage. But all is not well in the Shadowed Lands. Eldritch influence is seeping in, diminishing their powers, and threatening the realm's very existence.

To learn more of the coin, Beth and Cornelius must stand with the Sage, but the price of knowledge may be their souls.

Mothman Mysteries Books 1 & 2 By Bryna Butler

Picture
Eric Jansen is an alien. Offworlder. Take me to your leader, fall from the sky, space invading, phoning home, UFO jockey. A swipe of the tattoo on his arm will reveal his true form which locals call Mothman, a winged creature formed of ashen gray skin and glowing red eyes.

So when the recently deceased of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, start walking and talking, the Men in Black mark Eric as suspect number one. It will be up to Eric and the girl-next-door book blogger to solve the mystery before the black suits lock him up and throw away the key.

Are you ready for some campy fun? Fans of Doctor Who will love Wrong Side of the Grave, a suspenseful Teen Paranormal Mystery with a sci-fi twist. Grade 5 and up.

Check out the paperback with Special Edition cover designed by Joshua Labello of Envy Ink and behind the scenes commentary on the making of the cover on the author's site.

Review

Butler weaves multiple genres together seamlessly in her Mothman Mysteries series. The fast-paced YA story twists supernatural beings with sci-fi technology and a dash of romance. Wrong Side of the Grave is a great start to the series.

Narrator James Fouhey does a nice job of bringing Eric Jansen and the other characters to life.
Picture
Where will you be when all hail breaks loose?

When a mysterious new player wields a deadly storm to force the men in black into lockdown, teens Eric and Bridget are suddenly separated. With Bridget on the inside and Eric on the outside, the two race to beat the clock and open the doors before the suits make the ultimate sacrifice to prevent the base from falling into the wrong hands.

Get ready for a quirky thrill ride full of spunky book blogger rants, sneaky twists, liberally-used nicknames, smoldering smirks from Mothman, and even a hippy vampire. Hold on kiddos, it's Mothman verses the Weather Machine!

The Mothman Mysteries are set in the same universe with the same characters, but the books are stand-alone mysteries and can be heard in any order. Considered a clean teen series, suitable for pre-teens. A humorous young adult paranormal mystery for fans of Doctor Who and The Dresden Files.

Review

I enjoyed this installment in the Mothman Mysteries a lot better than book 1. Why? Two words - nonstop action! This one was a nail biter.

Michael Nola was great as the narrator. The urgency of the story really came across in his narration.
