I read this one last year and somehow it slipped getting posted here.  If you follow the blog then you know I LOVE RK RYALS!  The woman is a exceptional writer and is probably on the highest pedestal I have for writers.  Everyone needs to be reading her books.  But enough about me and my fangirling over here.  Without further ado here is my 5 Star review of Sex & Such by R. K. Ryals.

A best friend romance ...

Vivacious and outgoing, Amethyst August Nelson is the youngest daughter in a family of six girls. All named after jewels and the months they were born. Being the youngest in an all girl family isn't easy. It sucks. It's hard to stand out in a sea of high heels. So when she meets Archie Leopold Smathers in the fifth grade, he seems like the perfect friend; a guy and an only child. Who could ask for more?

Senior year, and they're still best friends. It's been a give and take relationship full of comic book mayhem, video games, and sneaking across lawns.

Until an embarrassing experience with the star quarterback has eighteen-year-old Amethyst asking Leo to take her virginity, and it puts a whole new spin on their friendship. Can their friendship survive beyond the boundaries of desire and unexpected revelations?

Thursday night dance confessions, a neighborhood full of quirky characters, and a comic book store full of off-the-wall advice will teach these two about life, love, sex, and each other in a way they never expected.

It takes more than one person to help Amethyst find herself. It takes a neighborhood.

NOTE: This is a coming of age new adult book that contains adult language and content.

Excerpt

"You know something?" he asked. I peered at him, our eyes clashing before sliding away. "You can always count on me. You do know that, right?"

My heart heavy, I studied his profile. "You can always count on me, too."

Leo had been spending most of our friendship protecting me from things, and that scared me. What happens to a friendship when that protection is gone?

My Review

Remember back in Honors English class how every book you read as a class project was riddled with a deeper meanings that the teacher would steer you towards? That’s what R. K. Ryals does with her contemporary novels. Not only does she lay on The Feels, but she makes you think, reflect and usually ugly cry. Sex & Such is no exception. I have said it before, this author speaks to my soul. R.K. Ryals rips me open, stirs up all sorts of emotions and then puts me back together. She is an exception writer who puts so much raw emotion into everything she writes. I feel like she bares some of her soul to us in each of her books.

Sex & Such is a coming of age novel about discovering who you really are, what your place is and who you are meant to be. The only thing holding back your potential is you. No matter your situation you can be the change you need. (<<<
I emphasize with Leo. Verbal abuse is hard to categorize and understand but none the less painful. At least bruises fade. The words hurt more, the emotional pain lasts longer and scars are deeper too. He and Amy are such opposites when it comes to how they each see the world. In the end I think is what makes them a great fit. They balance each other.

Once again Mrs. Ryals had knocked another one out the park. You definitely want to add this one to your TBR list!

R.K. Ryals is the author of emotional and gripping young adult and new adult paranormal romance, contemporary romance, and fantasy. With a strong passion for charity and literacy, she works as a full time writer encouraging people to "share the love of reading one book at a time." An avid animal lover and self-proclaimed coffee-holic, R.K. Ryals was born in Jackson, Mississippi and makes her home in the Southern U.S. with her husband, her three daughters, a rescue dog named Oscar the Grouch, A Shitzsu named Tinkerbell, an OCD cat, and a coffee pot she honestly couldn't live without. Should she ever become the owner of a fire-breathing dragon (tame of course), her life would be complete.
