Chloe Meets Aden

I was panting, out of breath, while my heart pounded rapidly with the adrenaline coursing through my veins. I couldn’t move right away. I checked myself for any obvious signs of injury, and thankfully, I seemed fine. I was shaking as I unfastened my seatbelt. I looked around for my cell phone but couldn’t find it.
My car was wedged in the ditch, pinning my door shut. I rolled the window down and crawled through it, falling to the ground in the pouring rain. I struggled to climb up the steep hill a few times, but the rain had turned it into slimy, wet grass making it almost impossible. After a few more attempts, I managed to claw my way to the top of the ditch on my hands and knees. It was pouring. As I reached the top, a loud crash of lightening made me squeal in fear. My neck warmed beneath my turtleneck. It was a cool, fall day, but now the temperature felt barely above freezing. Still on my hands and knees, I struggled to stand up only to stop when I looked up into the evil, dark eyes staring down at me. A chill shot down my spine, and instantly my stomach warned me to run.
He took a step toward me, eyeing his prey in obvious triumph. The next step he took startled me so that I fell backwards into the ditch, slamming my head into the back of my car. My heart pounded, and my instincts told me to get up and get away. The haziness made it impossible to stand. My head throbbed, and my vision was obscured. I blinked rapidly, rubbing the back of my head, trying to see through the sheets of rain drenching me. I tried to scream, but when I opened my mouth, nothing came out. I ignored the throbbing in my head and used my car for support as I pulled myself up. I prepared myself to run. Fast.
As I turned to run, a force surged me backward through the air. I landed ten feet away from my car. The pouring rain blinded me as he walked toward me. I blinked, wiping my hair out of my face. I was shaking uncontrollably, freezing and petrified, while my neck burned hotter. I turned to run, but the ditch was so filled with marsh that my feet sank and slipped out from under me. My heart was pounding; the adrenaline erased my aching head as I braced myself for his attack. When he reached me, the tall, black trench-coated figure stood towering over the top of me. His hat was tilted to cover his face, masking his eyes.
I lay there frozen and incapacitated as he took his last step and closed the tiny space that remained between us. He stood so close to me that I stared up at his face to get a glimpse of his eyes under his hat. They were black as night and dark; evil radiated out of them. There was no soul behind those eyes. All I saw was pure evil, and the pale, translucent skin surrounding those hate filled eyes glowed. Thunder rolled around me as lightening crashed in the distance. Strangely, he was not wet at all. The water poured around him, yet he was dry as a bone.
I was still frozen, unable to move or scream as his hand rose slowly. I gasped when I realized this was the dark man I saw at lunch the other day. My gut told me that I was right. Had he been watching me that day?
He leaned closer to me, aiming for my neck with his hand stretched out, fingers ready to wrap around it. I pulled away as far as I could go until my body was flush with the ground. The mud and grass squished around me. I pushed with all my force into the ground, begging it to surround me and protect me from this soulless man. I could feel the grass wrapping around my arms, sending an even bigger shiver through me as I realized it was wrapping me protectively as I sank deeper and deeper. As he came closer, I sent a silent prayer to my family that I would miss so much. My neck burned with fire; I could see a glow reflected in his eyes that was cast from my necklace.
I watched in anticipation until he yanked his arm back with an excruciatingly painful look, just inches away from having my tiny neck in his grip. It was as if an invisible barrier shocked him and wouldn’t let him any closer to me. His face burned with fury as his pallid flesh turned from milky white to blood red. His eyes radiated anger at me when he reached for my neck again. At this point, I knew there was no fighting him. Instead, I squeezed my eyes shut and tensed my body, waiting for the pain to come.
