Unless You Can Be A Unicorn

"Always Be Yourself."
That was the last advice Scout's Grandma Nora gave her before she died. Scout
has spent her life trying to be anything but, but she has a chance to start anew
as she moves several states away to college. She had always thought the glowing
aura she saw around some people was a childhood fancy, but when it started
coming back just as she was starting her new life, she learns there was much
hidden about who she truly is. Thankfully, she has a motley crew to help her along
the way: a spunky bookseller, a trustworthy pub owner, a commanding
grandmother, a possible best friend, and a hot rocker boy who only has eyes for her.

Award winning author Delphina Henley is a lover of unicorns, fae, crafts, and of all things books. She has written in multiple genres but finds herself always coming back to her true love: shifters. She resides in the Midwest with her husband and four children.

~ Lynn's Review ~
Unless You Can Be A Unicorn

This review is for all those people who read the title, Unless You Can Be A Unicorn, and balked at the work of art Delphina Henley has given us. I, like you, had my doubts. I implore you to look beyond your first impressions and read this book. You will not be sorry.

On the surface it is a paranormal/fantasy romance. But once you start peeling back the layers, you find Scout, a lonely college freshman who just wants to be normal. But what is normal? Who says seeing glowing people and unicorns is not the norm? Follow Scout on her journey of self-discovery, first love, and what normal is to her.

The author in her #sneakilyobvious way has given the reader food for thought. Someone should not be shunned for being themselves. Everyone should be accepted for who he or she is.

Now aside from this, author Delphina Henley has woven a beautiful romantic tale. True to her form, it has shifters, unicorns, vamps and lots of sexual innuendo. We would expect nothing less. This book flowed like sitting down and having a conversation with your best friend.

I am giving this book 5 Stars. I only wish it were suitable for a younger audience because of the positive message it gives. Be yourself. Be your fabulous self. Nothing more. Nothing less. My favorite line in the book:

“You are not now, nor have you ever been just plain normal. You are what normal aspires to be.” ~Pierce to Scout

Bravo, Delphina.

Meet The Author

Elizabeth Kirke wanted to be an author before she even knew what an author was. She used to say that she wanted to be an artist, but that was only because she was too young to write and had to tell stories with pictures instead. She hasn't stopped writing since she learned how. It wasn't long before she dreamed of becoming an author and couldn't be happier now that that dream is a reality. If she isn't writing...well, let's be honest; if she isn't writing she's probably on Facebook thinking that she should start writing. But, if she isn't writing or on Facebook, she's probably doing something involving books, baking, gardening, or yarn. In an ideal world, she'd be reading and knitting while something from the garden is in the oven. Then again, in an ideal world, she'd have a flock of ducks and a couple of goats. Like most slightly-nosy, avid readers, Elizabeth can't resist trying to catch a peek at books she sees people reading when out in public to see if she can figure out what it is. While doing just that one day, she realized that it would probably be the coolest-thing-ever if she caught a complete stranger reading one of her books. That's her new dream.

~~~REVIEWS~~~
In Wrought Iron Roses, Elizabeth Kirke weaves mystery, magic, and suspense into a spine-tingling, paranormal romance.
In this installment we learn more about Ethan and Rachel's connection, get clues about Jo, and a bombshell is dropped in the girls when they find out there Aunt Lydia is not dead! Kirke is notorious for dropping clues in plain sight that excited readers miss; me included. Trust me. The clues are there!
Kirke has delivered another fast paced, page turner in Wrought Iron Roses.
This was worth the wait!
Ethan and Angie, Rachael and Peter, Jo, and Allen. We learn so much more about everyone and meet Allen for the first time. Jo is still a mystery that I can't wait to figure out. There are some ideas in my head but we know nothing for sure. I want to learn more about Gus too! And the owl, aaaahhhh so many questions still. I can't wait for book 3.
Happy Release Day, Alyse Miller!
SnowedIn.v6_Amazon
Roxanne Hudson does not like Christmas. It’s cold, and quaint, and it comes with too many family obligations that take her away from where she really wants to be: continuing her trajectory as a rising star at her high-end fashion job in New York City. She’s got it all: a great job, a literally model-perfect boyfriend, a closet full of designer labels, and a brand new car that she hasn’t even bothered to drive—plus she just handed off some of her own fashion sketches the head of fashion at Vogue. But this year might be Grandma Myrtle’s last Christmas, and Roxanne’s parents have begged her to spend the holiday in the family cabin at the foot of the Green Mountains. With her boyfriend Hunter away at a photo shoot overseas and her best friend Spencer coaxing her to take some time to herself, Roxanne decides to leave the comforts of the city behind and brave the Christmas commute—and the wilderness—to spend Christmas in Vermont. But when an uncomfortable phone call from Hunter starts her drive off the wrong way, Roxanne doesn’t anticipate the blizzard that will take her by surprise on the snowy roads—nor did she pack for it. When she finds herself rescued by a handsome park ranger who’s the exact opposite of everything she’s been working so hard to achieve, Roxanne might just discover there’s a little bit of Christmas magic waiting for her after all.
Read an Excerpt
One more time for those listeners just tuning in, the announcer boomed, his polished radio vibrato hammering into Roxanne’s ears on her now too-loud radio, we’re expecting at least a good 18 inches tonight, more in the mountain areas, and it won’t be stopping anytime soon. Expect roads to be closed north of Burlington, and forget the mountain passes. Buckle in, folks. It's going to be a very cold and a very white Christmas. Ho ho ho! The tight feeling in her neck had returned, and by the time the DJ’s voice had been replaced by a new tune--Winter Wonderland, Roxanne realized with a grimace—the snow was coming down so heavily that she could barely see the front of her car’s hood. Visibility was pretty much nonexistent, so she slowed to a crawl and flipped the windshield wipers as fast as they would go. The defroster was on full blast and barely making a dent in the frost accumulation on her windshield. She checked the in-dash navigation screen and saw that she was less than twenty miles from the turnoff to her family’s cabin. For a moment she felt the sweetness of relief, but it was short-lived when she checked her phone and discovered she had no signal…and that her battery was nearly dead. She must have been so distracted after the call with Hunter that she’d forgotten to attach it to the charger, not that it would do her a lot of good without cell service. Roxanne grit her teeth and wished she had laser vision to cut through the sheet of white in front of her. If she could make it just a few more miles, she’d be there. If not, well, she just hoped that one of the two people she’d told where she was going would think to check on her and report her missing at some point before her body froze over in the Vermont tundra. Of course, Hunter was still in Europe and Spencer already imagined she’d be roughing in the wild so he probably expected she’d be out of reach anyway. Her parents would just assume she’d ghosted them.  Great. She imagined that meme of Jack Nicholson from The Shining, frozen in the topiary. The snow kept falling faster and thicker, and the BMW’s slick city tires were having a hard time maintaining their grip on the icy road. The speedometer was hovering just below the 5mph mark and Roxanne was entering the last stretch of her drive when a dark blur moved suddenly across the windshield. It could just as easily have been a tree as a deer, but it was wider than a tree and larger than any deer she’d ever seen. Still, anything that cast a shadow that size was definitely not something that Roxanne should be driving toward. Out of instinct she stomped her foot on the brake, and immediately felt the car give way beneath her as it slid out of control. She spun once, then twice, each time skidding loudly to the right. Roxanne screamed in fright, and just as the car was making its third rotation the driver’s side slammed into something hard and unseen, causing an abrupt stop. Her head hit the window, a curious sound of sleigh bells
Anyone who was absolutely anyone knew the story of how Julie Anne Baptiste’s parents met: the blue-blood Union cavalry officer and the freedwoman on her way North fell madly in love at first sight, all in the midst of the Civil War. It was legendary within New York City's Four Hundred, and from girlhood, Julie daydreamed of her finding own true love match. But now, as a well-seasoned debutante of twenty-one years, Julie only dreams of teaching and much prefers the vibrant world of her books over the company of society’s most eligible bachelors.
Julie is content to perform the role of affluent debutante until she realizes all of her tomorrows have horrifyingly become occupied by a gamut of social engagements, and they will remain so until she marries. Desperate and knowing only a wedding will put a stop to the madness of living as a debutante, Julie does the unthinkable: she responds to a mail order advert in the Heart and Hand Matrimonial Times. No longer a girl fantasizing of love, Julie did not anticipate forming a genuine romantic connection with the man she corresponds with, but when ex-Union soldier Forrest Wickes writes her, Julie loses her heart.
All seems well with Julie’s plan to leave the city and marry, until the society pages intercept one of her letters and within the hour all of New York knows of Julie’s decision to become a mail-order bride. However, the New York City society pages don’t know they only reported half the truth about Julie Baptiste. The debutante intends to marry not only Forrest Wickes but also his best friend, William Barnes. Her secret of taking two husbands safe, Julie sets out for the Montana Territory before the papers can learn the truth. But how will a debutante-turned-teacher manage frontier life with two husbands?
“We shouldn’t be doing this. I shouldn’t be doing this. It is wrong. I am so sorry, Chloe. I should not have let this go this far. We are from two different worlds. You are so good … pure. I am not. I come from somewhere dark, somewhere you never want to go. I will take you back to town, and you won’t hear from me anymore. I promise you. I will cause you no further pain anymore.”
I didn’t answer him. I didn’t look at him either. Instead I shut my eyes and let him lift me up. I didn’t wrap my arms around him. I had to hold my breath the entire way, careful to not breathe him in. I knew that if I did, the tears would escape. He held me in his arms and took me back to town.
When he put me down, I opened my eyes and looked up at him. “That’s not fair. You can’t just come into my life, turn everything upside down, and then walk away,” I said, my voice starting to crack. I looked up at him, and one tear escaped my left eye. “You can’t just go. Look at me! You said you don’t want to hurt me or upset me. And yet here you are.”
“I’m so sorry, Chloe,”
He lifted a hand to touch my face, but I turned away. I couldn’t bear the thought of not seeing him, holding him, touching him. I couldn’t look at him. It was too painful. I stood there for a minute looking away. Finally, I turned around to apologize, but he was gone.
I sighed and let the tears fall. My empty heart sank. I turned around to head to the library so I could cry.
REVIEWS
I am a huge fan of Elizabeth Kirke’s. Her More than Magic series awakened my love affair with YA. Kirke’s writing has a way of drawing you in and wrapping you up all cozy and tight from beginning to end. You will not want to put this book down. Those in her inner circle refer to her as #sneakilyobvious because she puts in all in her books. You, as the reader, just need to uncover it. Elizabeth Kirke’s books are the sort that you can read again and again with new discoveries each time. The woman is a GENIUS!
I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Creepy horror music rolling in my head; waiting for what lurked around every corner and then sighing with relief when nothing was there – most of the time. It is not a creepy horror tale but more so a suspenseful mystery. It hosts quite the characters as well. Rachel, Angie and Jo have inherited the antique store, the mysterious Peter who runs it, and Gus the fat cat, who appears to be more than just a cat. The Shaw girls are in for more than they bargained for when they arrive at Lydia’s Curiosities. Little do they know that their past and future is about to be brought to light as the power within them is discovered.
This book weaves together mystery, suspense, romance and magic as only Elizabeth Kirke can. Fans of the MtM series are sure to fall in love with her new series as well.
I really enjoyed this book! Elizabeth had you wondering through it all. Runes and curses and dreams oh my! This was an all around great book. I really can't wait to read the next one. This would be suitable for teenagers if you don't mind the mild sex scene, it wasn't anything that kids nowadays don't already see on TV.I really enjoyed this book! Lynn's Review
Sometimes the best things in life come from the places you least expect them. ~ Bastian
This is the first novel from Alyse Miller and my intro her work. What I love most about Stay With Me is the two main characters. Lucy and Bastian came across as very real. Miller isn’t blowing smoke with a sweet little HEA. Lucy is dealing with the loss of her grandmother and her strained relationship with her mom and other family members amid a bitter estate settlement. Bastian seems to be running from a life he isn’t sure he wants. A chance encounter and a cancelled flight lead them both on an unexpected journey.
Stay With Me will restore your faith in fate. But don’t be fooled into thinking this is a simple love story because it is anything but.
Crystal's Review
I don't know, this wasn't a bad story, but not great either. Chance meetings turn into more, but we only really see one side of the story and what was keeping them apart. Some drama towards the end kept me going. Family drama at it's finest! Again this wasn't bad but not exactly my thing either. I will for sure check out other books by this author.
