The Creeping by Alexandra Sirowy is a difficult book to review without spoilers. You guys know I don’t do spoilers. You are just going to have to take my word for it and read this book.
I gave this novel 4 stars because of the characters. The storyline itself once it took hold was greatness; a straight out of Hollywood movie. Let me see if I can explain myself.

I gave this novel 4 stars because of the characters. The storyline itself once it took hold was greatness; a straight out of Hollywood movie. Let me see if I can explain myself.

As an adult reading a YA novel I found the characters to just awful, hateful, bitches. I even considered dropping the book. I know teenagers act this way. They did when I was in school too. There was not one redeemable quality in these girls. I know characters have to grow and all but it was such a turn off for me. It wasn’t until around chapter ten or so that I could notice a change in the MC, Stella. Why am I telling you? Because I don’t want you to be put off by the beginning and not read this book. I am telling you it is worth it. I saw other readers’ reviews that were put off by the characters too but trust me; look past that.

Now to tell you about the story itself! The Creeping makes the Boogie Man look like a soft, cuddly kitten. These are the stories your grandparents told you keep you in line. I grew up hearing a tale similar to this too. The Creeping weaves in Norse folklore, mysterious disappearances, and murders going back decades. At the age of six, Stella witness the disappearance of her friend Jeanie. Unfortunately she has no memory of it. Fast forward to the summer before Stella’s senior year and the finding of body of a young child, who looks eerily similar to Jeanie, on the anniversary of Jeanie’s disappearance. Creepy! Stella is trying to recall her memories of that fateful day and why she kept repeating “don’t go looking for monsters cause you just might find them” over 200 times.

The Creeping weaves together an emotional, mysterious, supernatural tale that left me afraid to take the dogs out in the dark. Hearing twigs crack and leaves rattle in the dark took on a whole new meaning. It will also leave you wondering if the Creeping is real or just a tale used to cover up decades of unexplained events.

Scarefest 2015 with Lucian Barnes

10/23/2015

Lucian Barnes terrifies me.  It's true.  So far  I have only had the nerve to read one of his books.  Destine for Darkness took me down a path I was not prepared for.  Mr. Barnes writes in a twisted, bone chilling, Stephen King ish manner that left me feeling quite disturbed.  I still have books written by him on my TBR list.  However, I don't think I am quite ready for them.  See for yourself...

Not realizing that his son, George, witnessed this act, Frank decided to take him back to Misty Hollows.

Destined for Darkness is the first book I have read by Lucian Barnes. All I can say is WOWZERS! This thrill ride sucks you in immediately and won't let go.

At first, you feel sorry for Frank Mancini. He is severely abused by his mother and his dad seems oblivious to it all. After years of torture, Frank snaps brutally killing and mutilating his mother. Frank leaves Ohio and starts a new life in California. There he meets a wonderful girl, April, quickly falls in love and starts a family. Just as

Frank leaves Ohio and starts a new life in California. There he meets a wonderful girl, April, quickly falls in love and starts a family. Just as you start to feel that Frank deserves some happiness, he begins to kill again. He even goes so far as to kill his wife, April, in front of their young son, George. With his life in California destroyed, Franks decides to return home to Ohio to raise George. The story doesn't end here. The reader follows George growing up in Misty Hollows. As George gets older, he begins to learn secrets about his father. Secrets that shatter and disgust George forcing him to leave home. It becomes evident that George is following a very similar path as Frank did all those years ago. Will the sins of the father be revisited upon the son?

Lucian Barnes has a way of bringing crazy to the table so everyone can understand it. With hints of a Stephen King like style he seems to have a flare for the demented. His books reel you in, gripping you till the end and then relinquish you long enough to give you nightmares that night.

#Scarefest2015 ~ The Haunting of Sunshine Girl by Paige McKenzie

I love October.  Fall is the air.  Leaves are turning red, yellow and orange.  Mornings are crisp and cool.   And horror movies are on 24/7.  I prefer the classics; Halloween with Michael Myers, the first Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th.  You get the idea.  I also love to read scary books this time of year.  Thus #scarefest2015 was born.  I hope you guys enjoy the books you find shared here all month long.  But...BEWARE OF THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT.

The Haunting of Sunshine Girl
By Paige McKenzie

Published by Weinstein Books
Publish Date March 24, 2015

Let me preface this review by saying I don’t do spoilers.  Because of that I feel like my review does not do this book justice but I can’t give it away either.  Does that make sense?  I can tell you this…The Haunting of Sunshine Girl is more than just a ghost story. Sunshine gets a glimpse into her past, her birth parents and her true heritage.  I cannot wait to see what happens to her in the next book.

****4 Star Review
The Haunting of Sunshine Girl left me with goose bumps and peeking under the bed and double checking the closet.  What starts out as cute, fun giggles of a young girl soon turns to tortured sobs at night.  It’s a suspense read of an original storyline and a definite page turner.  I like that it is creeptastic without all the hollywood gore of a straight up horror story.  A great YA read for late middle and high school kids.  Adults who like a good haunting with enjoy this one too.

Paige McKenzie is the teen star of the hit YouTube channel The Haunting of Sunshine Girl. What began as a simple "girl and her haunted house" story has grown to a multi-webisode network with stories of zombies, ghosts, Sasquatch and lots of Sunshine! Full of positivity, humor and plenty of scares, The Haunting of Sunshine Girl has allowed Paige to spread her unique brand of adorkableness to other teens (and many adults) all over the world! At the age of 16, Paige (along with her mother, actress Mercedes Rose and producing partner, Nick Hagen) co-founded the production company Coat Tale Productions. The Haunting of Sunshine Girl was recently optioned by The Weinstein Company for development into a book series with a film (or two) to follow! The cover immediately grabbed my attention.  Its so cool and creepy looking.  Factor in that is based on actual events and I was sold.  I love it even more when there is the chance that is real.

Review

I was shopping Target and strolled through the books when I spotted Diary of a Haunting.  I was immediately drawn to the cover; so cool and eerie. The blurb reeled me in the rest of the way. Haunted house, strange happenings, an occult; count me in.  Best part…it is supposedly based on ACTUAL EVENTS!  The names and all that have changed blah, blah, blah.  But the fact that it may have actually happened moved it to the top of my TBR list.

Diary of a Haunting by M. Verano is Paranormal Activity minus the cameras.
I read this novel in one sitting.  I stayed up all night.  I tried putting it down but I was hooked.  I found myself waiting with baited breath each time Paige would wake up at 3AM to find Logan in her room watching her. I kept waiting for something huge to happen.  Like the PA movies, this book teases you along.  My hairs would stand on end.  I found myself snuggling closer under the covers.  Now this is a YA read and stayed true to its rating but it was cloaked in anticipation and fear.  The ending did not disappoint.  No let down. No aha I saw that coming all along moment.  It was greatness.

In the tradition of Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project, an American teen recounts the strange events that occur after she moves into a new—and very haunted—home with her family in this chilling diary that features photos and images of what she experienced.

Letters, photographs, and a journal…all left behind in the harrowing aftermath.

Following her parents’ high-profile divorce, Paige and her brother are forced to move to Idaho with their mother, and Paige doesn’t have very high hopes for her new life. The small town they’ve moved to is nothing compared to the life she left behind in LA. And the situation is made even worse by the drafty old mansion they’ve rented that’s filled with spiders and plenty of other pests that Paige can’t even bear to imagine.

Pretty soon, strange things start to happen around the house—one can of ravioli becomes a dozen, unreadable words start appearing on the walls, and Paige’s little brother begins roaming the house late at night. And there’s something not right about the downstairs neighbor who seems to know a lot more than he’s letting on.
