REVIEW BY LYNN

4/5

Cassondra Windwalker’s Preacher Sam is a psychological thriller that delves into the degradation of mankind when murder, lies, and secrets take over the small town of Broadripple, Indiana. The complex story sucks you in immediately as Amanda is arrested for murdering her best friend and business partner, Amy. Amanda shuts down and refuses to speak to anyone except Amy’s husband, Clay, and her former preacher, Sam Geisler.  This only adds fuel to the speculation as to what happened to cause someone to murder sweet Amy and the reason behind it all is quite disturbing.

While a slow build to the surprising climax, the author takes the reader on a journey of reflection and growth with disgraced preacher Sam Geisler as he attempts to find redemption from his sins in the eyes of the church as well as his own.  Having left the church after admitting to having a porn addiction, Sam is estranged from his wife and living in the spare room above his sister’s book café.  The murder plot almost takes a back seat Sam’s personal trials.

Preacher Sam is the first book I have read by Cassondra Windwalker.  I enjoy the depth and the rawness of her characters.  She bares all their sins but doesn’t judge.  The secondary character, Dani, Sam’s sister, is actually my favorite.  She adds levity to the serious nature of the story. Dani is feisty and mouthy and I love it!  I look forward to reading future books in this series.

SHADES OF HELL, BOOK II
ALCY LEYVA | JULY 30, 2019

Black Spot Books

For Amanda Grey, stopping the all-encompassing Apocalypse fated to plunge our entire existence into never-ending darkness ... just kind of sucked. Sure, she had managed to capture every demon set loose on New York City. And yes, she ended up thwarting an evil angel’s plans to destroy humanity. But she also lost her sister, her apartment, and—oh yeah—Amanda Grey totally died and got her soul banished to hell as a result.

Luckily, she’s not the type to take that kind of thing lying down.

AND THEN THERE WERE DRAGONS thrusts Amanda Grey into a whole new world of weird as she ventures out into the fiery wastelands, decrepit cities, and Olive Gardens of the afterlife in search of her sister and her own redemption. As the penultimate entry in the Shades of Hell Series, Amanda will be coming face-to-face with the truth behind the demon Shades, as well as a destiny she sure as hell didn't ask for.

Lynn's Review

The Isle of Gold by Seven Jane is equal parts fantasy, adventure, legend, and lore.  I was drawn into the hauntingly beautiful tale of Merrin Smith as she set sail on the Riptide in search of discovering herself and her past. The gorgeous descriptions made me feel like part of the Crew. This tale of pirates and treasure is much more than it appears.  It is a tale of love and loss, heartbreak and torment, commitment and determination.  I was blown away by the layers of this tidal wave of a story. IOG was a slow build for me, in the end, it was worth it. Isle of Gold weaves a dark version of the legends of Davy Jones, the Kraken, and the Sea Witch into an eloquent new legend. I cannot wait to see what happens next

While not my typical read, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed IOG.  A bit wordy but necessary for the world building, it is a hauntingly beautiful story that weaves a legend and lore and fantasy into a beautiful tale. ~ Lynn

Working on completing her ecology graduate degree, Bernice is doing invasive species research in Cleary Swamp when she is confronted by a mysterious hag who says she is the swamp’s caretaker. When Bernice discovers that the hag is actually a woman named Rebecca Hallett who disappeared in the swamp decades before she attempts to remove the strange old woman from Cleary Swamp, but little does Bernice know that Rebecca has a mystical bond to the area—one that possesses a human host and bonds them to it. One magical hallucinogenic powder cocktail and a space opera spirit journey later, Bernice’s life has changed forever. The swamp wants her for its new caretaker, and it won’t take no for an answer.

~~~REVIEW~~~
COME BACK TO THE SWAMP reminded me of a spooky, intriguing episode of the Twilight Zone. The novella is bizarre and twisted, but with a message - beware of your ecological footprint. While not preachy, the author makes known her ecological views as she seamlessly weaves science and magic together. I love the supernatural aspect of the story. Adding a voice to the swamp was an interesting and thought provoking point of view. I will certainly think twice before spraying Roundup on my weeds and will be looking over my shoulder for a forest woman to appear and yell at me.
Peril in the Old Country by Sam Hooker
Happy Release Day to Sam Hooker & Black Spot Books!
Peril in old Country
You’ve got to have rules. According to the good folk of the Old Country, they’re all that’s holding the dismal tide at bay. Start playing fast and loose with the rules, and it all comes tumbling down. First comes the goblins. Nothing entices them quite like minor breaches of etiquette. Cut in a line, say a swear word, or speak the proper name of the Old Country aloud, and your house will be infested with them before you know it. No one in the Old Country follows the rules half as well as Sloot Peril, who has never so much as given alms to a beggar without getting a certified receipt. He had his entire life planned out to the end and was so looking forward to making as faint a mark on the world as possible. Then he was asked to correct the worst financial report ever written. Had they called upon a lesser accountant, that report might have gone on to topple financial markets, drive honest people to utter ruin, or quite possibly acquire a taste for human blood and start terrorizing the countryside in bestial form. Sloot’s corrections prevented that annihilation from coming to pass; however, if he’d known what he was setting in motion instead, he might have heard annihilation out. Sloot will have to set aside his affinity for the rules and go up against underworld kingpins, secret societies, the undead, bloodthirsty cannibals from Carpathia, and even the ruthless Vlad the Invader! If that weren’t enough, the steely gaze of Mrs. Knife follows him wherever he goes. Does she really want to murder him, or does she just have one of those faces? At least Sloot’s misadventures bring the lovely Myrtle into his life. She has the sort of smile that makes him want to stand up straighter and invest in some cologne. He’s not even bothered by the fact that she’s possessed by the laziest philosopher ever to have died. Will the events put in motion by the ghastly financial report end in Sloot's grisly death? Almost definitely. Is that the worst thing that could happen? Almost definitely not.
