Author Interview

Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
Oh, don’t get me started. I tried to track down voice talent on my own. Two guys I lined up to do it flaked out on me. I got the equipment to do it myself, but it took too much time away from writing. I found another narrator through Audible who ghosted me. I lucked out when an author friend of my suggested I contact Russell. He’s used him for some of his books and thought he’d be a great fit for mine. Turns out he was right!
How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
I write sci-fi, so I have a lot of made up words, so I worked with Russell to get the pronunciation right. I also have a sprinkling of different languages thrown in, so he was great in getting the Arabic and other languages right.
Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
The Burning Son grew out of a desire to see a Merchant Freighter in a Star Trek universe. Shortly after I began work on it Firefly came out and I shelved the project for a few years.
How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
Write every day. No excuses. When you get in the habit, the words come easier. I’ve always got a ton of creative ideas flowing, so the trouble is staying with a project when I really want to be writing something else. LOL.
Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
Yes. I love that I can listen to books while driving, doing yard work, and walking my dogs.
I know it sounds kinda cheesy, but I would love to have seen the Library of Alexandria in it’s heyday. I LOVE libraries and that would be my holy grail if I had one.
If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the  primary roles?
Wow, that’s tough. It changes, so what I think today might not be correct tomorrow. Maybe Paul Rudd or Nathan Fillian for Mark, Dichen Lachman for Sara, Ellen Page for Racy, and Cassidy Nugent for Pythia.
What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
I’d say that whatever way you choose to consume books is great for you. I’m a fan of them all!
How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
I love to cook, so I put together a fantastic dinner for my family. Steak with sauted mushroom and onions, baked tilapia with roasted veggies, whatever sounds good at the time.
In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
I’m a big fan of series. I think as a professional author, if you want to make a living at it, a series is the way to go.
Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
Often. But strangely enough, not Mark.
What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Above all else, the most important tool in an author's toolbox is a critique group. But it has to be the right fit. It is the single most important thing for an aspiring writer to help them improve their craft.
Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks?
Talk with other authors who have published audiobooks. Get in with them and the narrator community. As tempting as it may be to do it yourself, the learning curve is very high, so hire a professional.
What’s next for you?
Write and publish book 5, publish a book of puns, publish a financial self help book, push the other Burning Son books out to audio.

Author Interview

1. TELL US ABOUT THE PROCESS OF TURNING YOUR BOOK INTO AN AUDIOBOOK.

I’m a technophobe, and the idea of figuring out how to produce an audiobook was so overwhelming that I avoided the whole idea for about a year. That turned out to be a good thing, because an Audible/ACX rep approached me in 2013 with an offer to pay me to produce an audiobook. At the time, my “big” Montana Sky Series books were under contract with Montlake Romance, I’d only begun writing the Mail-Order Brides of the West book, and my other Montana Sky stories were too short for audiobooks—or so I thought at the time.

So I started with the first book of my fantasy romance series. One of my friends suggested using her narrator, and he kindly walked me through the whole process. I loved the end result so much I became an audiobook fan. I, then, began production on the Mail-Order Brides of the West with a different narrator.

2. DO YOU THINK CERTAIN TYPES OF WRITING TRANSLATE BETTER INTO AUDIOBOOK FORMAT?

I think any kind of book-length writing can become an audiobook. However, I’m more aware of paying attention to the overuse of the dialogue tag—said.  There’s no need for he said, she said, he said, when the narrator will make the distinction with his or her voice.

I’m also careful to watch for the overuse of two, to, too in the same paragraph. When you read, those three words are distinct. But not when you listen.

3. WAS A POSSIBLE AUDIOBOOK RECORDING SOMETHING YOU WERE CONSCIOUS OF WHILE WRITING?

Not when I wrote Mail-Order Brides of the West: Trudy and Mail-Order Brides of the West: Lina. But by the time I wrote Darcy’s story, I knew the book would be in audio.

4. HOW DID YOU SELECT YOUR NARRATOR?

My friend Caroline Fyffe, who also wrote some Mail-Order Brides of the West books, found Lara Asmundson. I listened to Lara’s samples and loved her voice, too. She’s done all my indie Mail-Order Brides of the West and Montana Sky Series stories.

5. HOW CLOSELY DID YOU WORK WITH YOUR NARRATOR BEFORE AND DURING THE RECORDING PROCESS? DID YOU GIVE THEM ANY TIPS OR SPECIAL INSIGHTS TO THE CHARACTERS?

I don’t usually tell Lara anything beforehand, unless I’m warning her about a foreign language that will appear in the book. Sometimes, I’ll add a note about how I want a name pronounced. For example, I wanted Aun-drea, rather than Ann-drea.

I edit chapter by chapter as Lara does them. That way I can catch any voices I want changed. For example, Lara isn’t good at a German accent, and I finally had her change the dialogue and not give a character that accent.

6. ARE YOU AN AUDIOBOOK LISTENER? WHAT ABOUT THE AUDIOBOOK FORMAT APPEALS TO YOU?

Yes. I like listening to nonfiction audiobooks and read fiction books. I’m a psychotherapist, so there are always plenty of books I “should” read for my profession. But I’d rather read a story. I’m an avid book-a-day reader. So listening in my car or when I’m doing chores around the house is a good trade-off.

7. WERE THERE ANY REAL LIFE INSPIRATIONS BEHIND YOUR WRITING?

Sometimes a hero comes along, sweeps you off your feet, and changes your life. That happened to me. But instead of living the happily ever after, I started writing about happily ever after.
On New Year’s Eve, I was celebrating with friends at a cowboy dance bar in Orange County, California. As the old year drew to a close, I started dancing with a handsome young cowboy—a real one. (Cowboys are scarce in the OC.)
We shared a midnight kiss. He asked me out, and still reeling from that kiss, I agreed.
The two of us began to date. We had nothing in common, but he was sexy and fun, and we had a good time. After a few weeks, I started thinking: What if we met a hundred years ago in the Old West? Who would he be? How would I be different, and would our relationship have worked? And so the idea came to me for the story that I titled, Wild Montana Sky, which became the first book of the Montana Sky Series.
I physically modeled the hero, Nick Sanders, after my cowboy, and I made the heroine, Elizabeth, a little like me.
I started to write some of the scenes that popped into my mind, beginning with the one where Nick and Elizabeth ride their horses by a stream—a beautiful Montana setting. After that, I had to figure out who these two characters were and what their story was. And I had to learn to write fiction.
After a few months, my cowboy and I drifted apart. His work at the racetrack came to an end, and he moved north. I never saw him again.
But Wild Montana Sky is dedicated to him—to the cowboy who came into my life and changed it forever, setting me on a new trajectory and an unexpected and wonderful journey. Because of our brief romance, I became a writer. The book he inspired won the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart award and later hit the USA Today Bestseller list. Now there are over thirty books (counting the Mail-Order Brides of the West) in the Montana Sky Series.
I’ll be forever grateful to my young cowboy.

8. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THOSE WHO VIEW LISTENING AS “CHEATING” OR “INFERIOR” TO REAL READING?

First of all, I’ve never heard of such a thing! So I’d start by saying, “You sound so judgmental. Why do you care what other people are doing/reading/listening?”

Then I’d say, “Are you going to tell someone who’s hearing impaired that he or she is inferior?”

I might add, “Didn’t you have to study Shakespeare’s plays in school? Wouldn’t they have been so much easier to follow if you could listen (like they were meant to be heard) instead of read?”

And if that hasn’t gotten the point home, I’d say, “Have you tried listening to audiobooks? What’s your favorite book? Before you say another word against audiobooks, go listen to that title on audio, and then get back to me with how you found the experience.”

9. HOW DID YOU CELEBRATE AFTER FINISHING THIS NOVEL?

Usually, I am writing and editing until the very last minute and send off the manuscript at about 3 a.m. This comes after a week of long hours, little sleep, and no pleasure reading. So I celebrate by sleeping and reading for the next several days.

10. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR AUTHORS GOING THROUGH THE PROCESS OF TURNING THEIR BOOKS INTO AUDIOBOOKS?

I have a long chapter on audiobooks in the free ebook, The Naked Truth About Self-Publishing. The book has been out for a few years now so it’s somewhat out of date. But most of the audiobook information is still helpful.

Series: The Bloods Passion Saga, Book 1
Those in power are suppressing the truth, and it all stems from the Coven of Vampyres strict law: Human and Vampyre fraternization—strictly forbidden. When living in a society where love, passion, and desire are restricted it isn’t long before someone dissents. I just never thought that someone would be me.
The day I met him, the vampyre Sebastian of Orias, everything changed. Never in my life did I think someone like him, the son of a Count, would pursue a human like me. But he did. He stalked me . . . and now he wants me.
We chose to break the rules, defy the Coven, and embrace this connection, regardless of the dangers that may unfold. However, I fear that our passion may reveal secrets the Coven is willing to kill to protect.

Many would enslave her. It’s up to Honora to save herself by any means necessary.

The power of the Shadows courses through Ora’s veins, making her a prize an onslaught of enemies conspire to claim. To her great regret, they aren’t alone in their desires to exploit her. Evander, her husband, has taken to using her when it suits him, then casting her aside.

Greed, arrogance, jealousy, and power: each are selfish masters who dictate the lives of those who allow them into their hearts. All of which Honora has seen far too much of in recent months. Desperate to break free from the noose of cruelty tightening around her, she risks everything to forge her own path. How far will Ora go to turn the tides in Toorkuns? And will the sacrifice required be too steep a price to pay?

I’ve always loved to write ever since I was young. I would picture myself as the main character so I could go on adventures. They began as daydreams, which I eventually put down onto paper. Throughout the years I would write whenever I got the chance no matter how small the manuscript turned out to be. I’d tried the traditional method of sending out query letters to agents, but they would respond with a “thanks, but no thanks” note. I felt discouraged, but kept writing. I had a lot of encouragement from my mom, my Aunt Jeanne, my daughter, and my husband. Having the support helped keep me chasing my dream. A few years ago, I decided to buckle down and get serious about my writing. After some research and speaking with a friend of my husband, I took the plunge into self-publishing. I found an editor and a cover designer along with other indie authors on Facebook. I’ve joined groups and asked advice from writers who have already been through the steps it takes to get out there. It took me four years and three versions before I published my first book titled Wasteland. From there, I’ve completed several series and stand-alones with quite a few more in progress, so watch for their release.

Lynn's Review

Quick rehash for anyone not familiar with the series – It takes place 5 years after the More Than Magic Trilogy but you do not have to read those to start this 6 book series. I recommend it for context and because it’s a great series too.

In Rise of the Arcanist, non-magics and witches are going missing. The non-magics are never heard from again while the witches are disappearing for 6 months at a time. There is no evidence of where they go or how they survive because there’s no activity on their bank accounts and MES files. After stumbling onto this pattern, Jen, Thomas, Mariana, Ember, Char, Danio, and TS are tasked with investigating the disappearances.

Book 1 – lays the groundwork
Book 2 – 3 words: A FREAKING LABYRINTH!
Book 3 – Kirke tries to kill the entire cast!
Book 4 – Arena Fights! I now have more grey hairs. Thanks, Kirke.
Book  5 – This installment was so heavy. All the feels. I AM NOT OKAY!

And now we have made it to the final installment. I feel like I should have won a prize for making this far. Elizabeth Kirke is killing me and not so softly.

“Help us, Jennifer. You’re our only hope.” (Like what I did there?)

OH. MY. GAWD. Tums is acceptable as a reading snack, right? It is up to Jen to destroy the Arcanist. Jen who hasn’t been a witch that long. Young, inexperienced, and working alone. Elizabeth Kirke is killing me! My anxiety was through the roof.

Stomach ache - check
Chest tightness  - check
Sweating - check
Eating Tums like candy - check

In true Kirke form, Elizabeth delivers the reader an intense, kindle gripping chapter from one of the guys' POV, and then in the next chapter she goes to Jen. You see what is going on from her POV which is sometimes from the sidelines. Insightful? Yes. But absolute agony! No doubt Kirke sat back with an evil grin plastered on her face sipping coffee and enjoyed every excruciating moment!

The epic battle lasted for chapters. Chapters people! This is why I need Tums. I had a death grip on my kindle for 4 long hours. I couldn’t put it down. I had to know how it would all end and who would be left standing. In the end, I was not disappointed. Mentally exhausted, overwhelmed, and still chewing Tums, but I survived.

About the Author: Suzanne Rogerson
Suzanne lives in Middlesex, England with her husband, two children and a crazy puppy.

Her writing journey began at the age of twelve when she completed her first novel. She discovered the fantasy genre in her late teens and has never looked back. Giving up work to raise a family gave Suzanne the impetus to take her attempts at novel writing beyond the first draft, and she is lucky enough to have a husband who supports her dream - even if he does occasionally hint that she might think about getting a proper job one day.

Now an author of four novels including the recently completed Silent Sea Chronicles trilogy and a Czech translation of her debut, Visions of Zarua, Suzanne hopes the dreaded ‘W’ word will never rear its ugly head again!

She loves gardening and has a Hebe (shrub) fetish. She enjoys cooking with ingredients from the garden and regularly feeds unsuspecting guests vegetable-based cakes.

Suzanne collects books, is interested in history and enjoys wandering around castles and old ruins whilst being immersed in the past. She likes to combine her love of nature and photography on family walks, but most of all she loves to escape with a great film, binge watch TV shows, or soak in a hot bubble bath with an ice cream and a book.

Interview with the Author

The Lost Sentinel is book 1 in Silent Sea Chronicles trilogy. Do the books follow one main character throughout and if so tell us about them?
The Lost Sentinel follows three story threads that come together over the course of the trilogy and the main character holding everything together is Tei.
Tei is a young exiled mystic charged to find the missing Sentinel - the only person able to restore the dying magic of their island home. Tei has opposition from the Assembly, who are against all magic, and mysterious masked riders who seem determined to find the Sentinel too. Tei struggles to deal with the responsibility thrust upon her and suffers heartbreak at every turn but she never gives up even when everything is against her.

Did the story turn out the way you planned from the beginning?
I am not the greatest of planners, in fact I usually start with only a character and a situation and wait for the story to emerge as I write. Only then do I start to plan where the story will go. With The Lost Sentinel I always knew Tei was special and would need to face up to her destiny if she was going to save her people, but I didn’t realise the full scale of her involvement or how the fate of the other islands in the Silent Sea would also rest in her hands.

What real-life inspirations did you draw from for the worldbuilding within your book?
I have always loved nature and the natural world, so creating an island that has a connection with its people really appealed to me. I imagined our world and how our actions have consequences. How our greed, neglect and terrible misuse of resources and the creatures we share our home with is destroying our world. On the islands within the Silent Sea the inhabitants are destroying their homes with their disregard of magic, but it isn’t too late to change if they can just work together. I hope the same can be said for our world.

What inspires you to write?
My characters are my inspiration. I need to find them before I can start properly writing their story and once I get to know them I just want to keep going until their story has been told.
I have never been happy doing anything other than writing, I couldn’t imagine life without creating stories.

How do you to keep motivated?
I always have several projects on the go so I never get bored. I hate being idle and find when a book is finished that I feel an emptiness inside, so keeping going with other ideas helps curb that feeling.
Although I love writing, sometimes it’s important to switch off completely. I would happily spend day and night at the computer but when I’m trying to relax, I love nothing more than to binge watch TV shows on Netflix. It’s great for inspiring new ideas and characters too.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?
I suppose the hardest thing was the time it took me to write The Lost Sentinel. I started it years ago and broke off from it many times whilst I learnt my craft through evening and online classes. I then finished and published my debut, Visions of Zarua, before I was able to focus my attention of this book. I loved working on a trilogy as it gave me direction, but it was hard publishing them a year apart. I wish I could have shown some patience and waited to publish them a few months apart, but that’s just not me!
It will be nice to do that with the audiobooks instead. Hopefully, the whole series will be complete by early 2021.

Was it strange listening to someone else voice your words?
As with my previous audiobook, I’m amazed with the difference hearing someone narrate your story can bring to a novel. George has given the characters life beyond the page and acted out the emotions of the story so well. He’s also added some sound effects that have given the scenes more depth.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to listen to in The Lost Sentinel and why?
I have some favourite scenes that I was looking forward to hearing George narrate and he didn’t disappoint. He didn’t just narrate them; he performed them and captured the emotions of those traumatic events. I can’t explain the scenes I’m talking about as they involve the deaths of some prominent characters, but George did my characters proud.

Is it different having a trilogy being produced in audiobook, than just a standalone?
It has been an interesting experience having the trilogy produced and I’ve enjoyed working with George on a longer project. He’s very professional and we’re found a way to work that suits us both.
One good thing about the trilogy is knowing there is still more to come. Book 2 is almost finished and we still have book 3 to go. I know I’m in for many more hours of enjoyment watching the trilogy reach its conclusion and I hope listeners will feel the same way. The end of the trilogy is very special to me so I can’t wait to hear George narrate it.

What are your future projects?
I am working on two main projects that I hope to publish in 2021; a new fantasy trilogy and a series of romantic novellas set within a fictional seaside town in England. This is a departure from my favourite fantasy genre, but I feel passionately about the new project and can’t wait to share it with readers and listeners. I’m also working on a spy novel with a friend and it’ll be interesting to see what we come up with together.
After that I hope to dive back into the world of the Silent Sea and see what has become of my characters. I’ve really missed them, though I’ve love reconnecting with them whilst listening to the production of the audiobooks.

Days before she is to take her place as a shield maiden, like her mother before her, two deaths alter the course of Liv’s future. One belonged to a witch who called her by name, the other a chieftain from the north. Vengeance for the chieftain’s death comes in a wild fury that burns her village and slaughters her family. Left for dead, Liv pleads to Skuld – norn and weaver of the future – to spare her. A deal is struck that will endow her with the dark magic needed to claim her vengeance. But this power comes at an unfathomable price…

Ink made from the ashes of loved ones.

After his home is attacked, Calder races to warn neighboring villages of the threat. Little does he know he’s traveling into the path of fate that will lead him straight to Liv.
