Step one: Kiss Cal again. Just one more kiss.
Step two: Kiss someone else to compare.
Step three: Permanently close the door on Cal Chase.

Once again, I bang on the connecting door to my dorm room, trying to be heard over the blaring music coming from the other side. My bestie should be living in that room, but no, she transferred to be with her boyfriend, and now I’m stuck sharing a wall with stupidly hot track star Cal Chase. My friends say I'm lucky, but his mere presence annoys me, along with his late-night music and the constant gaggle of giggly girls who visit. I’m the only one who can see right through that patented “Cal Charm”. He’s just another player, and I’m not game.
So, why the hell did I let him give me an out-of-this-world kiss under the stars the other night? It had to be the magic of the meteor shower. I can’t actually like him, right? I simply need to prove Cal’s stellar kiss was a fluke, and I know how to do it and in just three steps.
Should be easy, right?
Yeah, famous last words.

I pictured April looking like Lucy Hale with a short, sleek black bob when she bothers with her hair, but otherwise it’s a poofy mess ever since she cut her long hair to donate to Locks of Love. She also has sharp green eyes that drive Cal insane.

For her dormmate Cal Chase, I could see a young Zak Efron from 17 Again playing him. Since he is there on a track scholarship, Cal has a lean runner's body, but with some strong swimmer arms. His hair is stylish, but he’s not trying too hard either. To April though it always looks perfect, which is just another sort of annoyance for her, lol.

In the mood board you’ll see things like a Chocolate Kiss and a letter, both of which Cal leaves for April in apology to his loud music playing and to tease her after their first kiss out under the stars/meteor shower. Books are April’s passion and she’s an English major, thus the stack of books, which Cal offers his assistance with when she’s seen carrying them back to her dorm room and trying to open her door. And the lock and key is what separates their connected rooms…at least for a little while ;)

A questionable suicide...a detective's suspicion...and a desperate hunt for a serial killer before more victims are found.
New York Police Department’s Sixteenth Precinct in Manhattan is under siege by the flu, and Detective Nick Larson and his partner, Detective Victor Sacco, are up to their armpits with work overload. The captain’s cigar is seriously chewed, and everyone is working around the clock. To complicate matters, on a personal level, things aren’t going smoothly, either. Laura Howard, the woman Nick loves, is also having issues with a psycho twin sister who is doing everything to ruin Laura's business and her life.
Then Nick's captain assigns a new case, a suicide. From the moment Nick steps on scene, however, something doesn't feel quite right, especially when, upon investigating the case further, the supposed suicide looks more and more like an actual homicide. Immediately, Nick's instincts kick into gear, but rev into overdrive when similar, questionable suicides pop up around the area. And with the way things have been going lately, it would just be Nick’s luck to have a serial killer on the loose.
Set in New York City, Hanging Softly in the Night is a story of murder, mental illness, determination, dedication, perseverance, and, ultimately, justice.

  1. Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    1. It was a lot simpler than I expected. I requested audio samples from several narrators and after listening to their extended samples, deciding what tone and diction I wanted, booked a narrator. We went back and forth on pronunciations on  a few things and then she worked chapter by chapter uploading the audio. I listened to each, sent my notes for changes and corrections, and then she reuploaded the audio based on those changes. All in all it was a painless process. It was much weirder hearing my book read back to me by a voice actor. I was not prepared for how surreal that was.
  2. Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    1. No! Not even a little bit. It wasn’t until much later when it was in the publishing stages that I even considered an audiobook.
  3. How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    1. Absolutely. I provided her with a breakdown of the main characters, what their insights were, motivations. I broke down a little bit of how I heard them in my head. Then I was able to note changes, corrections, or requests once the initial recording was ready.
  4. Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    1. Of course. Art reflects life, right? Even if it's a really small inspiration. Mannerisms, behaviors, speech patterns. All those I pulled from various aspects of life. A lot of Rose is based on me. A lot of her faults are mine. Lol.
  5. How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    1. That one’s hard. Burn-out is definitely a thing. I try not to focus too much on page count or daily words written. I know that’s a strategy a lot of writers use but I don’t like that kind of pressure lol. I’m a pantser when I write so I already don’t know what I’m doing and now you want to add the pressure of a word count? Nope. I write when my muse talks. I re-read and edit when she’s quiet. I take it one day at a time.
  6. Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    1. Yes I love audiobooks! I just don’t have enough time to sit and read as much as I want. I love that it allows you to multitask. I  also think sometimes I can fall deeper into the book  when I’m listening to it. A little bit like a movie I guess.
  7. If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the  primary roles?
    1. Oh man. Talk about a dream right? Well, if I got to pick Millie Bobbie Brown as Rose. Or maybe Daisey Riddle. For King Micah someone like Benedict Cumberbatch, but Dr. Strange Cumberbatch. I picture someone bad ass like Michelle Pfeiffer for Cap. Sayla.
  8. What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    1. Lol. I’d say get over yourself. As long as you’re enjoying the work, taking it in, experiencing the book, who cares how you’re doing it? You do you.
  9. How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
    1. Got a tattoo. Lol. I got a feather quill with ink blots and “Carpe Diem” on my arm. Then I took a nap.
  10. What’s next for you?
    1. Well, Shadow’s Past, the sequel, is set to come out Oct. 15. I hope to get book 3 going here soon after I take a well deserved nap and I also have an unrelated book in the works that I’m excited about.

Review

4 Stars
Wait till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn is a dark, creepy, twisted ghost story and more. Hahn also throws in the struggles of a newly blended family moving to the country and all the stress that that entails.

I have to say Heather was the perfect evil step-sister. I could feel Molly's frustration pour from the pages when Heather intentionally did things to cause a rift in the family.

While we only see glimpses of the ghost of Helen most of the time, Hahn made her a spooktacular ghoul that will have you second-guessing what you see in the night.

Wait till Helen Comes is a perfect MG Horror.
