REVIEW

Cozy mysteries are quickly becoming my go to read or listen when I am in the mood for a light mystery. Tara Meyers' You Can Lead a Horse to Murder is a laugh out loud mystery. While it sounds like a contradiction, it's accurate. Let me explain. There is a murder in the small quiet town of Sanctuary hence the mystery aspect. But between the high jinks of a labradoodle and MC Ember's quick tongue and sass, the seriousness of the book is lightened and actually works quite well together. This audiobook is the first of Tara Meyers' work that I have had the pleasure of listening to but she is definitely going on my TBR list. Tara creates a beautiful small town setting with endearing characters in her Secrets of Sanctuary series.

Cris Dukehart is fantastic as the narrator bringing the story to life through my speakers. She nails Ember's personality in her delivery.

A low voice, almost a shallow whisper, calls to me and I move toward the mirror. I take one last glimpse at Preston as remorse moves through me. When I became aware, I had no intention of ever letting the shadows take over. Unfortunately, Tezcatlipoca forces the issue.

The voice gets louder as the darkness ebbs and flows, taking shape. The sinister shadow, black as night, steps out of its midst. It surrounds me like a death shroud.

â€œCome to me,â€ I say directly to its evil core.

Terrors from another timeâ€”one after anotherâ€”fill my mind. I see the moment I made my request of the Lady of the Dead along with her fated words.

â€œA girl shall be born bearing your sigil. Find this body and regain your powers and knowledge. When Tezcatlipoca finds it, he will guide you. Only he can unite the soul and the body. But beware, Sin-Eater, he will learn your truth. When he does, your soul will return to MictlÃ¡n.â€

The shadow slinks back toward the mirror but stops just before breaching the surface. A pair of glowing eyes land on me.

Itâ€™s time, Sin-Eater.

I inhale deeply, steadying myself. â€œTezcatlipoca, something is wrong.â€

His arm wraps around my waist, holding me in place. â€œItâ€™s nothing to fear, Tlazolteotl. Itâ€™s just your memories returning.â€

The shadow nods, and its eyes drift toward Tezcatlipoca. Pointing at the mirror, I exclaim, â€œNo. This is worse than any memory Iâ€™ve ever had. See for yourself!â€

He swears unintelligible words, and his head swings toward the black glass. When he does, smoky tendrils rise from the surface and wrap around him. The Aztec god isnâ€™t strong enough to fight against the beast. Unfortunately, Iâ€™m forced to watch the scene playing within the smoking mirror.

Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca were always at war with each other. On that fated night, I created a special brew to intoxicate Quetzalcoatl. Tezcatlipoca had nefarious plans for his brother, but they were cruelly intercepted.

â€œMy lord,â€ I said as I approached the bare-chested god.

â€œDrink this and be merry. For there is a young maiden waiting for you in your chambers.â€

Quetzalcoatl, always eager for a night of sex, drank cup after cup of the enchanted elixir. When I was certain he was thoroughly intoxicated, I led him into his room.

He lowered his body onto the petlatl and allowed me to undress him.

The plan was for the god to mistakenly commit incest by sleeping with his sister. Tezcatlipoca had the unsuspecting girl drugged so that she would fall asleep in her brotherâ€™s chamber.

Dearest Chloe,
I hope this finds you well, child. You mustn’t be surprised by all of this. Congratulations on your eighteenth birthday. I am sure you have many questions, and you are still in doubt as to the truth of all this. It is true. This is your destiny, my child. You have all been brought together for a very important reason. All of you possess a gift that is unique to you. You, Chloe, are the key to it all. You are the chosen one. Much has happened over the past centuries. You are all descendants of very special ancestors. Your bloodline is the most powerful of all six bloodlines. You come from the original chosen one, the very first chosen one and the most powerful sorcerer to walk this earth: me. We did not know that this would happen again, but it has, and so it is your job to stop it. You are the only one that can, supported by the others that will stand by your side. You need them, and they will need you. They are under your wing; they will obey and do as you tell them, so be sure not to steer them in the wrong direction. You have the most powerful gift, if you have not already figured that out. You have been given control over the five elements: Earth, Fire, Air, Water, and Spirit. These will help you and protect you. You will need your powers for your journey. All six of you will have to come together to destroy him. I will give you as much guidance as I can, but the rest is for you to discover and conquer. You have all been given the gift of enhanced senses, not only of your surroundings, but also of each other.
