Scare Fest 2016 ~ Maleovent Gateway

Malevolent GatewayMalevolent Gateway by Dawn Gray
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love a great paranormal read with a fantastic goose bump and scare factor. Malevolent Gateway was just that. Dawn Gray did a marvelous job of weaving together the past history of the town and marsh into the present. I seriously may not drive at night near the water again. I love the cover too. Its a perfect representation of a couple of scenes in the book.

The S.P.I.R.I.T Series is Sam & Dean Winchester meets Mulder and Scully. It marries action, suspense, mystery, paranormal and complex characters bringing the readers a explosive and unique story. It will leave you questioning just what truly goes bump in the night. After reading this book, I don't think I want to know the answer.

“I’m not going to pretend that I’m not interested in getting to know you better. I think, if you stay, you’ll learn that I might have more to offer than that boyfriend of yours.” As difficult as it was, I’d been trying very hard not to read her thoughts. For some reason, invading that part of her, when I felt it was perfectly acceptable for me to do it with anyone else, seemed wrong.
“Is that so?” Her eyelashes fluttered open as she looked up at me, revealing her beautiful blue eyes full of…desire?
“Yes.”
“You certainly are sure of yourself.”
“I have nothing to lose, Maggie.”
“Now it’s Maggie?”
“I’m sorry?”
“Well, I was just getting used to the way my real name sounds when you say it.”
“Ah. Well, then, I will try to make a conscious effort to call you Magdalena.”
“You are a temptation.”
“Whatever it takes, Mags.”
“Now you’re just being mean.” She laughed. “Your charm, or your lack of charm, whichever one you use, isn’t going to make me stay.”
“Do you want to leave?”
“Not really. But I need to.”
I pressed my lips briefly against hers, just to see what would happen. As I guessed, she didn’t resist. “You do have a choice, Magdalena. Come.” I took her hand in mine. “One more dance, then you can leave. And even though you’ll be breaking my heart, I’ll even pay for your cab home.”
She followed me to the dance floor, and I took her in my arms. As I held her close, inhaling her intoxicating smell, she whispered in my ear. “Cian, I wish I could stay. I really do.”
“Shhh. No talk of leaving. Let’s just enjoy the moment we have together.”
When the song ended, I took Magdalena’s hand and walked her through the hallway that led to the outside. It was dark and I couldn’t resist one last shot at exploring her luscious body. I stopped and turned her to face me. I stepped closer, pinning her gently against the wall, and covered her lips with mine. This kiss was much different than the brief skimming I’d allowed myself earlier.
This kiss held all the allure I wanted her to feel, along with the promise of what could be if she only allowed herself the pleasure.
The cleavage protruding from the top of her dress left me weak in the knees, and my lips found their way to that spot as if they’d been possessed. I kissed the tops of her breasts, and she kissed my neck right below my ear. My fingers ached to touch the skin beneath her silver dress, and I moved to do just that. I found her thigh soft and silky. Almost as silky as the material she wore. My fingers inched up her thigh, massaging gently. I waited for her to stop me. I could have compelled her to let me do whatever I wanted to, but this woman was different. I wanted her to want it. To want me. When she didn’t stop me, I skimmed my forefinger along the edge of her panties and slipped it between her thighs, finding her oh so gloriously wet. My gods, she was stunningly beautiful.
My cock stiffened, a prisoner locked behind a zipper of steel.
“Cian,” she breathed against my neck, and I silenced her with my mouth, exploring every inch of hers, tasting, taking what she seemed so willing to give me as my finger teased the soft skin of her thigh just outside of her very wet undergarment. “I need to go.” The dreaded words flowed from her swollen lips like poison to my soul, and I had to fight the too-easy urge to compel her to stay.

“Do you miss the demon, Jazzmyn?”
“He’s not a demon.” Jazzmyn carefully weighed her words. “Do you think …? I keep wondering if he’s all right.”
Ms. Helen’s unsettling sigh carried through the bedroom. “That satyr man has crossed over. He’s where he’s supposed to be.”
“Is he?” Jazzmyn questioningly raised her eyebrows.
“Do you know somethin’ I don’t, child?”
Jazzmyn motioned to the newest daisy painted on the wall. “That just appeared last night.”
Ms. Helen inspected the flower. “I thought you said you painted them daisies.”
“No, that’s what I told Kyle to keep him from asking too many questions. I can’t paint. They just appeared.” Jazzmyn rubbed her hands together. “They’re a lot like the ones Julian put in Jackie’s bedroom at Fairview Plantation. If I didn’t know better, I’d say they’re exactly like the ones he painted.”
Ms. Helen spun around. Her coffee-colored skin paled.
“That’s not all. Last night, Kyle found Odette’s painting hanging sideways on the mantle. This morning, the coffeemaker had been turned on and filled with coffee before either one of us got up.”
Ms. Helen’s brown eyes grew in size. “Do you think it’s the demon?”
“Who else could it be?” Jazzmyn gestured to the flower on the wall. “He had a fondness for painting, loved coffee before he was cursed, and who else would turn Odette’s picture on its side like that?”
“What you’re suggestin’ would mean he’s finding a way back to you.”
“But when I came back from Fairview, you said he was trapped. How can he come back?”
“I’m not sure. I’ve never seen such a thing.” Ms. Helen knitted her brow. “You told me he was the one who threw the pot on the fire, not you. And you never spoke the words banishing him.”
“Yes, the curse was lifted, and he disappeared into a ball of green light after the pot exploded.” Jazzmyn tossed up a hand. “So?”
“If the ritual wasn’t completed, that might allow him to move back and forth between this world and the place where he’s trapped,” Ms. Helen warned in a dark voice.
Jazzmyn shivered as if enveloped by an icy breeze. “Which means he might be trying to get back to me.” She faced her daughter, sitting in her crib. “Back to Jackie.”
“Julian’s paid his debt to your family and to those he wronged, but you didn’t force him out of your life, Jazzmyn. Julian sent himself away. That tie to you and his daughter may have left a door open somewhere.”
“What door?”
Ms. Helen waved her hand high in the air. “The door that lies between this world and the next. A portal through which spirits can cross over.”
“Because I didn’t complete the ritual, he’s able to come back and forth through this door?” Jazzmyn gripped the railing of Jackie’s pink crib. “Are you sure about this?”
Ms. Helen put a reassuring her hand on Jazzmyn’s shoulder. “He’s bound to you and his daughter. It’s those ties that probably kept him from crossing over completely.”
â€œIs Julian a ghost, haunting my house?”
“Ghosts are dead people trapped on this earth, but your demon ain’t dead. Far from it.”
Jazzmyn was overcome by a wave of dizziness as what Ms. Helen was proposing sunk in. “Are you saying he’s alive, physically, somewhere?”
“If you’d performed the ritual like Ms. Evangeline instructed, your satyr man would have been sent to his rest. His physical body would have died. But you didn’t perform the ritual, at least not all of it.”
Jazzmyn glared at the woman, dumbfounded. “You never said anything about his being alive and trapped. I thought he was a spirit, and no longer living.”
Ms. Helen sighed and looked Jazzmyn up and down. “So do you want to get rid of your satyr man for good?”
Jazzmyn said nothing but glanced down at her baby in the crib.
“What about your crazy chef?” Ms. Helen pressed. “Kyle plans on marryin’ you in October. You got any idea what you’re gonna tell him?”
Jazzmyn sagged against the crib, unable to bear the weight of her emotions. “I don’t know what I feel for either man right now.”
“You’re gonna have to decide, Jazzmyn. Sooner than later, you’ll have to let one man go.”

3.5 Stars

This was a pretty good book, some parts were not very believable though. "I Love Yous" after one date and other little things like that. Colleen the main character seemed a bit childish in some spots, and in others everyone said how strong she was. I personally didn't see anything strong about her.

Everything felt rushed, except for the descriptions of the murders. The story line was written well though, trying to get into the mind of a murderer. Re-reading this it seems like all bad, that's not the case! I did like the book, I read it in 2 days, when I didn't even know if I could squeeze it in my to read list for the month. Being a debut novel it was great! The ending made me mad, in a good way. I can't wait to read more! It can only get better right :-)

About the Author
Molly
Like many novelists, especially romance writers, my infatuation with a good love story began early. I don’t remember exactly how old I was, but I’ll admit that Barbie and Ken acted more than a couple of the story lines I had in my head (sorry, Mom, but, no, not all of them were kid-appropriate). The obsession continued to grow as I got older and, whenever I left home, I always had a wire-bound notebook and a blue ballpoint pen in hand. In fact, every August, I still get that goofy, schoolgirl itch to buy up oodles of pens and paper, because, while I love my laptop, nothing compares to writing long-hand. If the house is quiet and there’s a thunderstorm rumbling outside, even better.
Not that I have the slightest a clue what a quiet house is anymore. Having three rambunctious (but awesome) kids, a zippy dog and a pesky cat has completely blurred my memory of peace and quiet. Oh, and I have a husband too–I call him the FisherGuy–and he’s probably louder and crazier than all the rest. I think I’ll keep him though. After all, he keeps me in fresh fish year-round (yum!) and he’s good hero material. Did I mention he’s also a firefighter?
We live in Northern Wisconsin and, let me tell ya, living here has provided lots of small-town fodder for this writer’s overactive imagination. Of course, I know no one who’s lived anything close to the steamy experiences I write about (not that I’d tell ya if I did *wink*). There’s something inherently sexy about not knowing what goes on behind closed doors…or even better, letting my imagination run free, concocting all kinds of stories and scenarios and putting them down on paper. Or my laptop.
2014 is going to be a big year for me, as I debut my first novel early in the spring and the majority of the remaining series as the year goes on. I’ll also be releasing at least one, hopefully two, books in a second series. Both are set in small towns and both will feature smart, spunky heroines and sexy, smokin’ hot heroes. Oh, and romance…sometimes sweet and sometimes sizzling.

Fly (Velocity, #1)Fly by Molly McLain
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Where to even begin? WOW. This book has brought out so many emotions. Yes I even caught myself giggling, brought to tears, and angry! This was a very well written book. Taylor takes everything that is thrown at her, more than anyone should have to. She is loyal to a fault, but that's what makes her, her. I can't wait to see her fly <3

Until then I will impatiently wait for Fight (Velocity #2) to be released!

Fight (Velocity, #2)Fight by Molly McLain
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Stayed up way too late to read this, but it was worth it! This was a pretty quick read (about 5 hours for me), but I couldn't put it down! I have been impatiently waiting since I finished Fly (Velocity #1) to read this. Col and Tee were meant for each other. The drama surrounding them made things hard! I loved how this brought everything together. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes a good at some points very steamy romance, with lots of emotion.

NOT for anyone under 18 :-)

Scare Fest 2016 ~ Anna Dressed In Blood

Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1)Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

If Supernatural took place in high school it would be Anna Dressed in Blood. Cas Longwood could totally have been a Winchester.

I love the cover; very Amityvilleish. the depiction of Anna is spot-on. Anna Dressed in Blood is a perfect October read. It's got chills, murder, and ghosts! Surprisingly it also has romance. But this is no mushy teen love story. It is a spine-tingling, edge of your seat, pull the covers over your head to go to sleep kind of story.

My favorite character is Carmel. She may be Queen Bee but the girl can sting you. Who knows she was going to be so fierce!

*** The TV and movie comparisons made are not meant as a slight on the author, but rather as a compliment and analogy for those unfamiliar with the book.

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.
So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead―keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.
When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.
But she, for whatever reason, spares Cas's life.
Anna Dressed in Blood is a 2011 Kirkus Best Teen Books of the Year title.
One of NPR's Top 5 Young Adult Novels of 2011.

Derrick’s Choice
Titan Security – Book #1
By Cynthia P. O’Neill
Genre: Erotic Romantic Suspense
— SYNOPSIS --

Derrick Caldwell:
Trying to carve out my own way in life, I joined the Air Force, only to have my dad pull strings to place me in Special Ops. Turns out, my entire life had been decided for me; I was to follow in my father’s footsteps.

Once discharged, I had my goals within reach and defying dad was at the top of my list, until Jesse walked in, stealing everything I wanted. I should’ve hated her for taking away my choice, but I couldn’t; one smile was all it took to brand herself on my soul. I swore I’d bide my time and eventually have my dream job and her!

Who knew the position my father forced me to take for Titan Security would lead me to everything I desired? I’d have to act fast, as time was working against me, with a potential killer on the loose, money missing from the company, and someone stalking her…

Jesse Bradford:
On the verge of making manager, I was consumed with work, before Derrick stepped in and snatched my promotion out from under me. He’s familiar, but how? And why did he take my breath away every time we touched? I wanted to make his job a living hell – until someone tried to kill me.

Now my life was in his hands, the ones I imagined bending me to his will. Why am I even thinking this way? He has me confused, forcing me to rethink who I am, submitting to my desires, and helping him track down a killer(s) before they strike again. Can I trust him? I don’t know that I have a choice.

— EXCERPT --
“Our first encounter was meant as an attempt to scare you off. You now understand why it was dangerous coming there: you were related to the owner. But, I convinced your uncle to allow you membership. At least that way, you wouldn’t seek guidance elsewhere, and I could keep watch over you and protect you.” His voice lowered and the pupils of his eyes widened as he took in my appearance. He was turned on, and I couldn’t blame him; the pull between us, which existed both in the club and at work, was stronger than ever—a hum of electricity just waiting to be released. “The moment I saw you, I wanted you for my own. I used the threat of a killer to keep you close, but truthfully, I wanted to explore the feelings you stirred inside me—something I’ve never felt with anyone before. When I gave you that collar, I made sure it had my initials as Master Derrick, not just the Master of your Dreams.”

He looked out into the room, staring at what, I don’t know. “I love dominating you in the bedroom and behind closed doors. I want to push you to your limits, but I want you to challenge me in life. I’ve never met someone who could go toe-to-toe with me on anything.”

He swallowed hard, before turning his face back to me. “You are the only person with the power to destroy me. I don’t know when it happened or why, but I’ve fallen for you. Seeing you almost killed made me realize just how deep my feelings run. I thought they were related just to the sexual chemistry between us, but the pull was there at the gym, at the pool, and in the office when I was just Derrick. Why do you think I worked so hard to keep my distance from you? I tried to force myself not to get emotionally attached, but here I am. As I said before, little one, you have all the power.”

I reached up, grabbing the back of his head and bringing his lips down to hover close to mine, as I whispered, “I forgive you. I think I’ve fallen for you, too.”

His mouth possessed mine completely, as his tongue pushed through to devour every inch of me. I matched his kisses fervently, needing reassurance that I was truly alive.

Now Kai has lost her ability to astral travel, and she’s forced to relive the murder each night in a nightmare. With no word on Darla’s body, Kai decides to take the mystery into her own hands to find closure and get back to her travels. As she searches for answers, she continues to bump into Darla’s brother, Collin. Can she catch the killer and still open her heart to Collin, or will she lose her gift forever?

I fell onto my back, my toes still dangling off the edge of the cliff. I just want to get out of this tiny town, I thought. I wanted to truly touch the sand on the beach and let it fall through my fingers. I wanted to share that experience with someone. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do that unless I traveled for real and took my body with me.
A shrill cry cut through my thoughts.
I jolted to my feet quickly, immediately alert. I couldn’t tell where the sound had come from, so I didn’t move right away. Then another scream resonated from somewhere near the parking lot.
“What the…” My words drifted off.
A third shriek sent me running toward the source. Someone was in trouble. It’s not like I could do anything about it, but instinct overcame me. I pushed through the trees. When they began to thin, I slowed and crouched low. I don’t know why I did. No one could see me, but I guess that didn’t register in my mind at the moment.
My eyes locked on a bush where the sound of shuffling bodies and weak coughing was coming from. A thud came, throwing long brown hair into view. The girl’s head smashed into the ground violently. She let out a grunt, but it was barely audible.
All I could do was stare in horror at the scene unfolding before my eyes. My heart slammed against my rib cage, and my lungs burned in protest to the breath I was holding.
Then, before I could manage to breathe, a rock came down on the girl’s skull. Blood oozed from a fresh wound. One more time a concealed figure cracked the rock against the girl’s forehead. It was only when she went limp and her head swiveled in my direction that I saw her eyes. They stared my way lifelessly while blood trickled down her familiar face.
A shriek of horror ripped out of my lungs. Before I could really process what I had just seen, the bluff washed away from my vision. I felt my spirit spring back to my body as if they were connected by elastic. I bolted upright in bed, my heart hammering. I didn’t even realize I was truly screaming until my mother burst into my bedroom.
“What’s going on?” she demanded.
I forced myself to swallow the bile rising in my throat without answering her. After a few moments, I finally realized what had just happened. I’d just witnessed Darla Baxter’s murder, and I had no idea who killed her.

Alicia has done it again! If you liked her Crystal Frost series you will love this! This is a very clean YA paranormal. I would recommend it for anyone over 12 really. The only reason I say 12 is because it deals with death. If your kiddo can deal with that then it's clean enough for any age! And I can honestly say even at age 29 I enjoyed it! I really don't want to give anything away so I won't say more, but just read it :-D

“When I was seven, my father killed me. It was after they brought me back to life that the ghosts found me. They followed me to my world – to Saint’s Grove.”
Sammy Jo Edwards’ small town life has been anything but ordinary. She’s grown used to the strange occurrences that only seem to affect her. But, when a seemingly normal event lands her in extraordinary circumstances, Sammy Jo is hard-pressed to understand what has happened, let alone figure out how to get her old life back.
The last thing Soothsayer Ben expected when he “saw” Sammy Jo enter his world was to find himself drawn to her. Yet, when fate seems determined the two should meet, his growing attraction to her is quickly met with danger. The life Sammy Jo so desperately wants back is threatened.
With only seven days to find the portal back to her world, Sammy Jo and Ben embark on the most dangerous mission of their lives. If they succeed, Sammy Jo gets her life back. If they fail, there will be no future for anyone.
Can they really save the future? And what will become of their hearts if Ben and Sammy Jo are once again worlds apart?

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I will start off by saying this is NOT my usual type of book, that being said I enjoyed it! Sammy Jo seemed a little immature to me for being 20, but life events can cause that also. Personally I was more mature due to life events so I suppose I don't know what is "normal" for that age. This is the first book in the Saint's Grove series that I have read, but I can't wait to read more. The town seems captivating. Back to the story itself, there were so many twists that I didn't see coming. I am hoping Amy Richie chooses to write a follow up of this :-)
