Have you ever made a daring move?

Di Jenson is a successful Broadway dancer who makes a bet with bad boy Van Vanzant to dance at Vanz, his exclusive gentlemen’s club. The bet? That Di can make more money with one dance than all the rest of the club’s dancers combined—without taking her clothes off.

Van accepts the bet because he hasn’t been able to forget his blind date with Di the year before. He wants to show her he’s more than a guy whose name is synonymous with adult entertainment. Despite the fact that Di is drawn to the bad boy in Van, she knows she can’t respect a guy in his line of business. But when she dances at his club, the bet turns into something neither will soon forget.

Can a bad boy with secrets win the heart of a dancer who dares to make a Scandalous Move?

Let's dive into the book...

Brandon Hawkins is a homeless, nineteen-year-old Marine Corps veteran, currently roaming the boardwalk in Venice Beach California. On the evening of his 19th birthday, he is scavenging for food when he is harassed by three frat boys from a nearby college.

MichaelAngelo Curtis is a 25-year-old mathematician and programmer for the NSA who is walking the boardwalk while grieving the death of his twin brother six months earlier. For reasons unknown to him, MichaelAngelo intervenes when he sees the homeless guy being harassed and he ends up breaking the arm of the ringleader, Grant Briggs. MichaelAngelo escapes any charges due to the fact that he recorded the incident on his cell phone, which he forwards the police for their report.
After dealing with the police, MichaelAngelo invites Brandon to his house for a hot meal and a shower. Unbeknownst to both of them, this unexpected encounter leads to a strong bond being forged between the two damaged people who find a temporary respite from their own loneliness.
The next day, MichaelAngelo discover that the police officers leaked the video to the internet and the clip of the frat boys getting ‘owned’ goes viral, racking up millions of hits in a few short days. The release of the clip and the subsequent outcry over the actions of the frat boys leads the three to be expelled from college, publicly humiliated and their futures ruined.
While Brandon and MichaelAngelo see themselves growing closer, lines are crossed and feelings morph beyond the simple bonds of friendship, veering towards something like love. This is a big problem since neither one of them is gay. Brandon, an orphan who grew up in horrible foster homes, group homes, juvenile detention and eventually the streets, he has never had anybody in his life to care about him. MichaelAngelo and his twin brother were orphaned when they were eight years old and they only ever cared about each other. Since the death of his brother, MichaelAngelo has been emotionally lost. His inexplicable bond with Brandon is a completely new sensation even while filling a hole in his life that he never thought could be filled.
As MichaelAngelo and Brandon explore their new and confusing feelings for each other, Grant Briggs, the ringleader of the frat boys, plots his revenge on the people he blames for the destruction of his life. One night, after returning from a vacation with MichaelAngelo, Brandon is viciously attacked by Grant and one of his friends. As his life flashes before his eyes in what he is sure are the final moments of his life, Brandon smiles with the ironic realization that all the pain and suffering he endured throughout his life were necessary to bring him to the point of being able to love and be loved. When his eyes close for the last time, he feels lucky to have met MichaelAngelo and grateful for the love they shared…
When MichaelAngelo is informed of the attack, he begins and extended vigil at the hospital, the same one where his twin died, and he’s certain that the cruel outcome will be the same for Brandon. Six weeks later, though, Brandon wakes up from his coma, disoriented, but alive. Unfortunately, the attack left him paralyzed from the waist down.
Before Brandon was attacked, he and MichaelAngelo had acknowledged that they were in love, but they never physically consummated the relationship, mainly due to the fact that MichaelAngelo is a virgin and literally didn’t know how. And while consummating the relationship is a promise that MichaelAngelo made to Brandon, he now refuses to go the distance while Brandon is paralyzed. Since there was no permanent damage to his spinal cord, there is still a possibility that Brandon will walk again. MichaelAngelo is content to wait—using that as additional motivation for Brandon to continue working hard on his complete physical recovery.
Six months after Brandon’s attack, the relationship shows signs of strain, as Brandon wants to break things off so MichaelAngelo can live a normal life, find love again and live happily ever after. But MichaelAngelo is 100% committed to Brandon—no matter what. On the first night they are in bed together since the attack, Brandon awakens in the middle of the night Something is happening and it can’t wait until the morning. As a startled MichaelAngelo worries, Brandon pulls MichaelAngelo’s hand down across his chest, down his stomach and then to his groin, where, to MichaelAngelo’s surprise, Brandon has come alive! This first manifestation of feeling below Brandon’s waist confirms their hopes for a bright, normal future. Their passionate kisses and tearful embrace show us that true love can indeed conquer all!

Character Descriptions
Brandon ‘Bran’ Hawkins: Bran is a 19-year-old Marine Corps veteran who is suffering from PTSD and is currently homeless in Venice Beach, California. Being homeless is nothing new for Bran, though, as he was an orphan who never knew his parents and grew up in horrible foster homes and group homes and eventually ended up living in the streets of Memphis, Tennessee before enlisting in the Marines at 17. He is used to having nobody to care for him and is not bitter or angry about his crappy lot in life. In fact, he is surprisingly content and matter-of-fact about the realities of his life. His self-deprecating sense of humor and his unbridled joy at the simple things in life make Bran an endearing and lovable character.
MichaelAngelo Curtis: MichaelAngelo, who was named after the famous classical artist, is a 25-year-old mathematician and computer programmer for the NSA. While he has the trappings of a nice life—a beach house, fancy cars and lots of money to burn—he is currently grieving the death of his twin brother, Leonardo six months earlier. MichaelAngelo and Leonardo were exceptionally close, even for twins, after being orphaned by a car accident when they were 8-years-old. MichaelAngelo is devastated because he has never loved or been loved by anyone other than his brother and he has no idea how to navigate the world on his own. MichaelAngelo has no filter and describes himself as a “social retard” due to his inexperience interacting with others in a ‘normal’ manner. But he is always open, honest and direct.
Devon Johnston: Devon is a security agent hired by the NSA to keep MichaelAngelo safe and protected. Because MichaelAngelo works from his home instead of the campus of NSA, his identity and the nature of his work need to be protected so that he remains away from the prying eyes and ears of our enemies. Devon takes his work very seriously and will use the considerable tools at his disposal, including dedicated FBI and CIA operatives to keep MichaelAngelo’s identity safe.
Grant Briggs: Grant is the ringleader of a small group of frat boys that harass Bran on the boardwalk. The selfish, entitled son of a prominent trial lawyer in Los Angeles, Grant is a narcissist that finds a way to blame everyone but himself for whatever troubles he gets himself into. When his ill-mannered exploits on the boardwalk turn into a viral internet sensation, he is expelled from college and becomes a pariah. As his future prospects dim before his very eyes, he sets his sights on getting revenge on the homeless guy who he blames for his current situation.

About the Author: Jan St. Marcus
Jan St. Marcus is currently working as a professional photographer in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area where he recently relocated after 25 years in the Los Angeles Area. Many of those years were spent living on the Beach in Venice, California, the setting for The Boys Of Venice Beach Series. DAMAGED HEARTS is the first of 4 novels planned for the series. He is currently single.

I am looking forward to my interview tonight with the stunning Vanessa Burton. I have some serious hair envy goin on over here!  Join us tonight at 7:30 PM ET on the 2 Girls & A Book facebook page. There will be an open Q&A with Vanessa at the end.

If you follow my page I have been gushing about the Heartmender Series for the last 2 months. I even posted a TikTok video about it. You can find it at  @lynn_2girlsandabook.  Cammie Larsen, with Monster Ivy Publishing, designed all 3 amazing covers and as you read each book you will then see then amazing symbolism in each cover.

Let's dive in and talk about the books!

Heartmender (Bk 1)

Picture
In the land of Barracks, the economy thrives on the barter of their citizens' most precious commodity—a human heart. Each year, the Heart Reign festival is thrown for those who have become of age to trade their hearts for their deepest desires. And this year is Adelaide Tye's year to trade.

After despising Heart Reign for years, Addie endures her Extraction and discovers that her heart isn’t gray and dying, like all other hearts in Barracks, but bright red, alive, and teeming with power.

With a warning from the extractor of hearts, Addie rushes through Heart Reign to make her choice—trade her heart to Schism, the monster who took her brother years before, or go in search of the Mender—a mythical man said to purify hearts and save her own heart. Either decision will rip her away from the one man who has always been by her side.

Knowing there is only one real choice to make, Addie jumps through Schism’s red door and is thrust into a dark and dangerous realm where she is faced with making a trade she may not survive.

For fans of Stephanie Garber's Caraval and ABC's Once Upon a Time.

Heartmender has been sitting on my shelf for over a year. I was drawn to this book because of the cover. It’s beautiful and I needed it on my shelf. So there it sat looking all pretty and decorative but really had no other purpose. Then book 2 came out with an equally stunning cover. I had to own the series. My collection could not be incomplete, so I ordered the second book and placed it on my shelf. Prior to the third and final book releasing, a friend recommended I read the series. Easily swayed by this friend’s excellent taste in fiction, I dived into book 1, Heartmender.

Y’all… why didn’t more people tell me how great this book was? I was hooked from page 1. The characters were so detailed and alive. The story was well paced and intriguing. I loved how Ophidian’s challenges followed the seven deadly sins. Great tie in! If he offered me a lazy room filled with books and a comfy bed, Ophidian would have had me. The MC, Adelaide, was selfless, loving, caring, and smart. I couldn’t help but cheer her on through the seven doors.

I loved the way the author took religion and weaved it into a fantasy novel. The story was beautifully written. I can’t wait to continue the series.

Picture
Burton is a mastermind at epic world building. The prose and imagery weave together beautifully to create a thrilling tale of sacrifice, love, and faith. I flew through the pages of Heartbreaker with bated breath.

Picture
Heartrender... more like epic battle, white knuckle, edge of your seat, remember to breathe, greatness!

I like that the author included multiple POVs but I found myself reading multiple chapters in one POV due to the jaw-dropping cliffhangers. I skipped around a lot but it all made sense.

Burton has fantastic world building skills. I felt like I was in the story experience it all from the first book. I cannot wait to see what adventure Burton has in store next. for her readers

About the Author: Mitchell Dorian
Mitchell Dorian would proudly describe himself as a non-conformist, hyper-aware of mainstream sensibilities and always sure to contradict them so that he may never be defined by what the herd thinks. He may also have a poor sense of irony.
He lives with his pet rock, Duane, and his Sim family. He finds it easier to be friends with entities whose names, faces, and personalities he can alter at will with a click of a button and/or whim of the mind, depending on his mood.
He has strongly considered setting up a pet Instagram for said rock, but Duane has not proven cooperative yet, often looking away at inopportune moments during the photographing process.
Mitchell's first novel, THE FINAL CONSTANT, will be available on audiobook August 2021.

When did you know you wanted to be an audiobook narrator?
I don’t know that I ever really had a specific moment where I realized this is what I wanted to do with my life, and I certainly never imagined it would become a full-time job. Actually, for quite a while I would joke that I did the opposite of what people who pursue acting careers do in the movies. So instead of sitting around doing math problems all day and then throwing down their pencil and saying “Damn it, I want to act!” I threw down my scripts and said “Damn it I want to do math problems all day!” And then I went back to school. It was only really when COVID hit and I took some time off work for safety reasons that I started pursuing the job in earnest. Next thing I knew it started to pay off, and now I’m here!
A lot of narrators seem to have a background in theatre. Is that something you think is essential to a successful narration career?
Helpful, most definitely, but not essential. It’s great to have experience in any form of acting when you’re doing this because, fundamentally, that’s what a narrator is. But, that said, it’s its own style of acting and not everything in the theater is going to translate perfectly. For example, you don’t have other actors to play off of, and you’re not as free to gesture as you might be on a stage. That said, training specifically in narration is essential. A good teacher makes all the difference when it comes to learning how to understand and engage with the stories you’re telling.
What type of training have you undergone?
I’ve studied with the great Sean Pratt, of course, and I’ve also studied acting at Anthony Meindl’s Actor Workshop out in Hollywood. I was there for two years, and I’ve been aching to go back for a long time now. I also like to watch/listen to other narrators work to get an idea of how they do their jobs, and I have a ton of teachers in mind I want to work with in the coming years, like Scott Brick and PJ Ochlan.

How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for narrating?
I recently discovered this magical activity called “going outside for a few minutes” that I do between recording sessions. It really does make a difference to not only leave my studio, but my whole living space, for a little while. It’s really easy, even with clear separation between home and office, to still associate the “home” part of your living space with work since my commute is a walk to another room,.
Is there a particular genre you feel unsuited for? Have you ever declined a project because you didn’t think you were right for it?
Sure! I think it’s largely an instinctual thing. I’ve had certain projects come my way that I just felt for whatever reason I was not the person who could bring the work to life in the way the author wanted, and I said so. I don’t think it’s a feeling applicable to a certain genre or anything like that, but I’ve definitely had to turn down projects because I’ve felt badly suited for them.
What about this title compelled you to audition as narrator?
I know this author quite well, and I’d been wanting to narrate his stuff for a long time. I jumped at the chance when the opportunity presented itself.
Have there been any characters that you really connected with?
Actually, Dr. Eddings in “The Final Constant” is definitely one. I’m sure we can all relate to the pain that is wondering “what would my life be like if past me hadn’t done x stupid thing?!” It can be a hard feeling to live with if we let that obsession get the better of us, and when I was reading for him, it felt kind of like I was exploring that idea of an extreme obsession with fixing the past myself.
If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
I know it would be a terrible idea, but yes. I would. I think I’d jump way ahead like 7 or 8 billion years to sneak a peek at what the galaxy will look like post-Earth. Plus, this way I can’t screw up the past.
If you could narrate one book from your youth what would it be and why?
“Holes,” for sure. I think that was the first “mature” book I read in my elementary school days and I remember being blown away by it. And I read it years later and it still held up. It’s just such a cool, unique story told in such a dry, funny way, and I would be over the moon if I ever got to record it.
What’s next for you?
A lot more books! I’ve got Stacy Bennett’s wonderful “Call of the Huntress,” Sam Burns’ “Fluke and the Faithless Father,” A.V. Warren’s “Vicheu Chronicles,” and A.D. Trosper’s “Dragon’s Call” series. Plus I’m planning on starting my YouTube channel back up and doing some live gaming streams there in addition to my promo videos! Come hang out if you see me!
