About the Author: Michael Drury
Michael Drury is by her own account a funny sort of woman, not only in sharing her name with men, but-perhaps owing to that-in her long-ago conclusion that men are not the enemy.
Ms. Drury grew up north of San Francisco with redwood trees, vineyards, and the Pacific Ocean as neighbors. She now lives in Rhode Island, writing books and poetry to the roll of the nearby Atlantic.
After graduation from Stanford, she lived in New York, working at Life and Harpers’ and writing for many other leading magazines. She has published 300 articles, stories, profiles, essays and poems.
Portions of this book first appeared in the February 1965 edition of Glamour magazine.
About the Narrator: Blair Seibert
As a passionate fan of non-fiction books and memoirs, narrator Blair Seibert also binges on thrilling "real-life" fiction, like those filled with medical suspense. The honey-toned voice professional enjoys stories that provide insight into the human condition while promoting understanding and empathy.
Blair frequently confides, "I love to learn. I love to talk. I love storytelling." Hence her reason for leaving a lucrative career as an educator and commercial architect. Those experiences and others have seasoned Blair's voice, lending it a soothing tone of reassurance and poignant recall.
Stepping into the audiobook arena in 2017 allowed Blair to begin an exciting secondary vocation as a narrator. Built on early work as a voiceover actor and model, she has developed an exciting list of clients through production houses, indie authors, and publishers like Penguin Random House.
As an independent producer, Blair recently acquired the audiobook rights to a non-fiction memoir that impacted her life in the mid-1990s. Of "Advice to a Young Wife from an Old Mistress," she says, "it has never left my mind. I want the world to hear it and be changed."
And those sentiments exemplify Blair as a person and business owner. "I want to be the change I need to see in the world. So, I believe the first step is reading, and the second is listening."
Whether at work or play, Ms. Seibert embraces life as a friend – an attitude that extends to her business partners as they join forces to change the world one collaborative effort at a time.

Women:
- Women too often lose themselves in the roles of “wife” and “mother.” The encouragement to be a woman first resonates and inspires a growth mindset.
- The material is thought-provoking, and one won’t agree with everything. But the book certainly prompts reflection about the wants and needs expressed in a marriage relationship.
- “Affair proofing” a relationship requires an understanding of men’s deepest needs, and Ms. Drury unabashedly shares her insights. Hint: it’s not about sex.
- The mistress introduces the foundational building block of successful and lasting intimacy. Another hint: it’s still not about sex.
- In the end, Ms. Drury unveils a paradigm shift that restores women’s emotional wellbeing.
- Ms. Drury liberates husbands from the burden of a mistaken responsibility. What is it? Find out!
- It will generate some interesting topics of conversation for deep conversation with your partner.
- The mistress highlights the pain points that might lead men to seek out an extra-marital affair. And forewarned is forearmed.
- “Advice to a Young Wife from an Old Mistress” revokes societal constraints and releases the pressure engendered by predefined roles in the marriage relationship.
- It’s short compared to other relationship books and valuable to you too.

- Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing? No! At that point in my career the thought of a recording never even crossed my mind. Now that I’ve had a couple of my books made into audio, I’m a little more cognizant during writing of phrases that might be verbally difficult, AND, if you listen to my narrators, include as many of them as possible. (Just kidding.)
- How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters? Before recording begins I always prepare a character sheet for the narrator, and then answer any questions. Austenne didn’t really require much more than that from me. During the recording she had a few additional questions here and there, but mostly took it an ran, beautifully.
- Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing? The inspiration for this book was a real life incident. I had just dropped my wife off in front of Home Depot on a rainy day and when I parked the car I heard something thump in the trunk. Writer’s brain kicked in immediately, and I thought, “What if Kim is actually an assassin and that’s a body bumping around back there?” I never checked, so technically the body is simultaneously in the trunk and not in the trunk, but anyway from the moment it happened I felt like I had to write something that included that idea. Our Home Depot is also very close to a Panera Bread, so there’s that.
- Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format? I, in all honesty, believe the audiobook is superior to the printed work in every aspect. Austenne’s intuitive reading of the various characters elevates them to a level that the printed book strives for but does not achieve. Also, as I mentioned in a recent Facebook Live episode, her insertion of emotion into the exposition sections makes even those parts come alive.
- What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”? I just smile and nod my head, and say, “Okay, little buddy. Okay.” Maybe tousle their hair a little. Because they don’t seem to have that problem watching a film adaptation of a book. And I can guarantee you that an audiobook is going to be a lot truer to the original than any film could ever be. And with the quality of the narrators working today, the acting is generally better than you’ll get in a film as well.
- What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump? Writing slumps are generally conquered by sitting my ass in front of the computer and getting to work. Like I said, I’ll give myself a day off when the tank is on “E” but basically the best way to break out of a writing slump is to start typing words. I always go back to Hemingway on this. “Start with one true sentence, and the rest will follow.” With reading – oh man, does this touch a sore spot with me lately. I have fallen so behind on my reading that it’s not even funny. To conquer this I now force myself to sit still for an hour a day and just read. I set a timer and everything. The habit has not yet cemented itself, though, and there are days I climb into bed at night and realize that once again I didn’t read. Still, I’m hoping that some organization and some habit-forming exercises will turn that back around for me.
- What's your favorite:
- Food – Taco Bell
- Song – Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd
- Book - LOTR
- Television show – 30 Rock
- Movie – Casablanca
- Band – The Beatles
- Sports team – The Mighty Yankees of Nuevo York.
- City – New York City
- Are any of those things referenced in appearance in your work? Taco Bell appears in CUC #3 and #4. I think I make reference to something Tina Fey does in 30 Rock somewhere. And the Yankees are all over book #4, (Dan Porter is a fan of the Colorado Rockies, however. Weiner.)
- What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors? I’ll share a quote a friend of mine recently posted on Facebook: “If you feel something calling you to dance or write or paint or sing, please refuse to worry about whether you’re good enough. Just do it.” – Glennon Doyle. Another good friend of mine puts even more simply. “A writer writes.” – Angelique L’Amour. Just tell your story. Eventually that will lead you to finding your voice. Once that happens, watch out.
- Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks? Trust your narrator! Resist the urge to over control. These people know how to tell a story, and they care about your book as strongly as you do. If you’ve written something that you want to turn into an audiobook, hand your baby to your well-prepared narrator and let her/him do their job.

The hair on my arms rose. My heart thumped hard, the blood pulsing through my chest into my throat. Looking left and right, my muscles tensed to run or fight.
âWhoâs there? What do you want?â I said at the same low whisper, my voice shaking.
A shimmering blur disappeared behind a treeâa featureless something, flashing in indistinguishable color as quickly as a silent whip.
âLaura,â someone said again, gentle and feather-light, drifting between the largest trees in front of me.
I held my breath.
âLaura.â My name resonated through the humid night air, echoing through the sugar maples before it thinned and died.
It was a male voice, full- bodied, but lacking malevolence and hostility. Strangely, it put me at ease. There must be a boy somewhere out here in the woods. I was sure of it. The voice sounded young, maybe my age of seventeen.
Or maybe it was a ghost. My Uncle Dean had told me the locals believed these woods were haunted. But ghosts couldnât kill. At least thatâs what I believed.
âWho are you?â I asked, relaxing my stiff muscles just enough to take a step forward. My shoulders dropped as I exhaled a pent-up breath. Broadening my stance, I leaned forward, raising the branch, and squeezed my eyes shut, hoping to hear it again.
âLaura,â it repeated. The word lingered through the dead of night, ringing softly in my ears. I opened my eyes.
âHow do you know my name?â I asked, moving toward the direction of the voice. As a cool breeze rustled my pajama shorts, I wrapped one arm around myself.
A bird chirp rode the wind, followed by several more, weaving into a rhythm of tweets and trills. I looked up. Within the tousle of leaves and sway of thin limbs, perched a gathering of birds, flexing their wings for flight.
I took a step backwards, my eyes fixed on the canopy of leaves.
The bird calls increased, one squawk overlapping the other until their unique melody collapsed, twisting into an eerie song and wing beats.
âAâare you still there?â I breathed, eyeing the woods ahead of me and taking another step back.
A smear of color flashed to my left, and a cloud of leaves rose from the forest floor.
âDonât go,â I said, breaking from a whisper.
The woods resonated with angry bird speak, their unnatural song thumping in my ears.
âI want to see you,â I shouted above the rising mad twitter.
A shadow skated across the ground at my feet. Wings flapped overhead, and a bird beak met my scalp with a hard peck.
