Interview with Author Peter McAllister

Picture
Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing? Yes, because I love listening to them.  It makes me more inclined to alliteration and descriptions that have a great sound.  We have all seen the memes that show how little of the words we actually read, and how much our brain fills it in subconsciously so I try and think about what happens when someone says it!

How did you select your narrator? That is tough.  The ability to tackle the range of accents was important along with the ability to accept feedback on the audition was important, but finding the voices that matched the ones in my head was the key.  The characters are alive in my head, so I can hear and see them (I am just the scribe) so making sure they matched was important.

How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters? For me, the narrator is like the books Uncle – they are related to the voice in my head, but they are different in their own right and provide a different flavour.  It was great working with Josiah -working on the accents and some of the First Nation place names.  Google was a great help here – even the Australian place names have a pronunciation available on the web.

Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing? For me, the inspirations came the history of science and technology. 120 years ago it was legally required that a car must have someone walk in front of it with a red flag to warn people of the dangerous machine and prevent injury.  Now we have made a tradeoff – the benefit of cars and trucks to our society vs over a million people killed by them every year.  What tradeoff will we make as we release AI into the world unsupervised?

How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing? I wrote much of the first draft 15 years before I had a session with an editor and decided that I wanted to finish it, so I guess the answer is that I didn’t. The enthusiasm came back  as I read through a copy of at draft and found myself laughing at it and knowing that if I finished it  others might enjoy reading it.

Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you? I love audiobooks, they make manual chores and commuting become wild adventures through time and space  (and occasionally educational).

If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go? I sure would – there are so many events in history (and the future) I would love to see what really happened – thinks like the discovery of fire and the wheel through to the first teleporting of a human.

If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the primary roles? Charlize Theron would play Trinity based on her performance in Atomic Blonde.  Snoop Dog would probably be Cletus, and Liam would be played by James Spader. Sounds a bit weird now its written down!

What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”? Is reading to your children cheating?

How did you celebrate after finishing this novel? It is never finished in my head – always thinking of changes that I want to make – everytime I look at it!  Otherwise it is just relief and a beer!

What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump? I tend to have a list of scenes I need to write, and when it is time to write, I pick a scene that matches my mood.  For a reading slump – I pick up Enders Game by Orson Scott Card – a brilliant book that always inspires me.

What's your favorite:
Food – Fish and Chips
Song – Unguarded Moment, The Church
Book – Ender’s Game, Orson Scott Card
Television show – Star Trek (the original)
Movie – Fifth Element
 Band – The Stranglers (UK)
Sports team – All Blacks  (Rugby Union  - New Zealand)
 City - Vancouver

Are any of those things referenced in appearance in your work?  Yes several - you will have to listen to pick them out!

What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors? Editors are actually on your side – give them a break!

What’s next for you? Getting through the COVID -19 lockdowns and writing the sequel.

“Hey,” she greeted, smiling.
Seeing her pretty face come to life on the small screen kicked up Kurt’s pulse rate. And stirred his dick. But then, he’d been walking with a semi-hard-on all weekend. He’d managed — just — to not give in to the temptation and take himself in hand.
He cleared his throat. “Josephine.” Nope. His voice was still all croaky.
“You okay?”
“Yeah.”
 â€œBoys okay?”
“Yeah.” Oh, way to go, Kurt. Reduced to blubbering one-word answers.
â€œOkay then, what’s up with you?” Jo moved position, and Kurt saw the iron post behind her. She was in bed. Like him.
What’s up? “My dick,” he blurted, viewing the bulge pushing against his pajama pants.
She blinked. “Oh.”
“Oh? That’s all you gotta say? Oh. Since you walked into my office seven weeks ago, it’s had a mind of its own. And then I did that fool thing of hauling you out of … Polly and kissing you. And then … then Friday … Friday, I truly lost my mind, and now my dick’s had a taste of your pussy again, and it wants more. Dammit, Josephine, stop laughing,” Kurt ground out.
He was staring at her ceiling, strips of wood lying atop support beams, while the sound of her giggles filled his ears. It was a beautiful sound, and a reluctant smile stirred his lips.
“Jo? Honey?”
Her face filled his screen again. Big brown eyes were shining bright, and she was swiping a hand across a bright pink cheek. “Should I apologize, Sheriff?”
“Never.” He loved her just the way she was.
“Hauling me out of Polly was … hot.”
“So I’ve been told,” he admitted.
She chuckled. “Have you watched the video?”
“Yeah.” Just five minutes ago. Hence the call. He cleared his throat. “I need to apologize to you. You deserve more than ‘a haul out the car and kiss senseless on the side of the road’ behavior from me. I wasn’t think—”
“It was real, Kurt,” Jo cut in. “That kiss was real. Just like Friday was real. And both were hot. Don’t apologize for being authentic with me.” Exhaling sharply, she added, “I’m suffering from the same malady that’s afflicting you. Except” — she grinned — “mine’s … internal.”
He swallowed. Hard. “This … between us? Are we going there again? Are you prepared to give me a second chance?”
The prolonged silence was killing him, and he stared into his screen, into her beautiful eyes as she looked at him, wishing he could cup her face and feel her soft skin and will the answer he wanted from her sweet lips.
And then, “Yes. Yes, I am.”
Kurt let out the breath he’d been holding, and his heart stuttered to life again. “We’ll talk when you’re back from California,” he promised.
A bright smile bloomed across her face. “We’ll talk.” This was quickly followed by a frown. “About California. Seriously, Kurt, did you have to sic bodyguards on me?”
“Jo, your concealed license is not valid in California, and I don’t like you being unarmed, so yes, until I’m around to protect your ass and Branson is caught, you will have bodyguards on you. It falls under the contract protecting your entire family.”
Jo muttered something under her breath.
“Sorry?” He wanted her to repeat what he’d thought he’d heard her say.
She looked him in the eye. “I love it when you go all sheriff-y on me.”
“Josephine,” he growled at the blatant lie.
She huffed. “Oh, okay. I said … you’ve gone and made me all … heated, Sheriff. So. Not. Fair. You’re hundreds of miles away,” she whined.
Join the club, baby. Kurt chuckled. “Oh, it’s very fair, Josephine. I’ll see you when you get back on Wednesday.”
“Till Wednesday, Sheriff Wheeler. Sweet dreams,” she added with a wicked smile stretching from ear to ear. She blew him a kiss and disconnected before Kurt could reply.
“Sweet dreams, baby. Love you,” he whispered to the blank screen, catching the kiss, placing his fist over his heart.
Kurt lay back smiling. And opened the app to view That Kiss again.
But his smile had faded by the time the video ended.
He’d mauled Jo, on the side of a public road. And left her.
He’d slaked his lust, taking her, roughly, in a kitchen. And left.
After toying with her for years, he’d left her, without a backward glance.
He’d not ever done right by her.
How was he going to make it up to her?

Review

I enjoyed this installment in the Mothman Mysteries a lot better than book 1. Why? Two words - nonstop action! This one was a nail biter.

Michael Nola was great as the narrator. The urgency of the story really came across in his narration.

Katy stood  in the doorway of the living room for what seemed like an eternity waiting for Matt to just acknowledge her. No such luck. Finally, she stepped into the room and sat down on the couch. “Matt, we need to talk.”

Matt kept his eyes nailed on the wall. He clenched his teeth causing that slow tick to show in his jaw. “Why? I want you gone. And I'm not exactly in shape to push you out of my house, now am I?”

Matt could always easily get under her skin. Katy had to draw on every bit of steel resolve she had developed in their time apart to not let him do it once more. He’s hurting and pissed. It’s not you.

“Our house." Katy spoke the words and knew a second later she did so without remembering the very thing she had just told herself. The words didn’t come from any thought process. They just poured forth uninhibited in their battle of wills.

Matt let out a snarl of frustration. He turned his head to face her as he sat against the head of the bed. “My house! You walked away from it, and when you did, it was no longer yours. You gave it up just like you gave up our marriage. Our life.” Matt swallowed down the lump of pain he had to force words around. It threatened to rip through him as he forced himself to focus on Katy’s beautiful eyes. His anger and resentment so thick, the words were choked out. “Gave me up! You can’t claim anything. Nothing! Do you hear me, Katy? Or is it Katherine? Tell me, sweetheart, who are you tricking yourself into being nowadays? Because I sure as hell don’t recognize you. Not at all.”

Katy looked away as she crossed her legs and focused on the dusty dappled sunspots in the dining room Where dust mites swam in the light. Did she envy their freedom? She shouldn’t. They were just as trapped as Matt was.

Nodding, she spoke to him with a tone as if talking to a child, “You’re right, Matt. I did. But”—she turned back to him— “I’m here now. And like you said, you can’t very well show me the door.”

It was a cruel button to push, but Katy could see it also burned away the impact of the pain narcotics. His rage singed the chemical hold on Matt to emotional ash. He reached out to grab her arm and pull her close. He focused on her eyes. He wanted to make it clear to her and leave zero doubt how very far she pushed him.

“When the fuck did you get so cruel? My Katy would never be so damn mean. Is that why you’re here? To be mean? To see the mess you left behind so you can have some kind of twisted pride in how it all fell apart after you left? Well, get a good look, baby.” He let her go with a shove. He rolled to his side to fully place his back to her. “Then get the fuck out.”

Author: Dena Nicotra
Narrator: Kendra Murray
Length: 7 hours 31 minutes
Publisher: Dena M. Nicotra⎮2020
Genre: Science Fiction
Series: Simp Series, Book 1
Release date: Jul. 1, 2020

Nothing simple is real. You will look twice at people...and technology.
The idea of making life simple appealed to the mainstream. After the economic collapse of the 21st century, the government latched on to technology like an economic lifeline. Bio-synthetic humanoids integrated into society with relative ease. Taking on the menial jobs, humans grew dependent on their android counterparts, but the corporate sector took things too far. Wrapped in their one-click comfort zones, people trudged along with their lattes and fashion trend blinders.
The dark side of genetic engineering is a harsh reality. Humans are being hunted. They don’t stand a chance.
No one seemed to notice that they weren’t acting as hospitable as they once had. They should have. They didn’t have weaknesses like we did, and, they were capable of clever, unimaginable cruelty.
Those that have survived call the rogue bio-synthetic humanoids "simps" because the company that started the mess had a cheesy marketing campaign that said they made life "Simple". They couldn't have been more wrong. When the war broke out, simps were used to spare human losses. It was viewed as a brilliant solution until a developer working for the enemy infected the simps with a virus that caused them to turn on the humans they served. They couldn't shut them down fast enough.
Hailey Pachello doesn’t do people. She relies on herself because it’s easier. It’s safer, and it’s less dramatic. That is until she meets Leonard ‘Gizzard’ O’Malley. Giz has connections and a plan, and it might just be a good one.
Join Hailey as she embarks on her wondrous adventure, in a timeless, powerful, and memorable cyberpunk thriller.
Fans of Isaac Asimov will appreciate this fast past thriller, although the three laws of robotics never applied to simps! This cyberpunk tale is set in the year 2038.

Savannah really wants to dance in the Nutcracker. However, she is very disappointed in her first practice and it leaves her doubting herself. At home she drifts off to sleep and is visited by her dolls and the Nutcracker from her magical dollhouse. A ballerina bear, a fairy, and a Nutcracker show Savannah to not give up on her dreams. Reaping a Pain in the Axe - Stacey Rourke

Picture
History knows me by many names. Nyx, the Goddess of Night. Lilith, the Lady of Darkness. Selaphiel, the fifth angel of God. But the course of my life has been determined by my greatest mistake. I opened the gate and allowed Lucifer to fall. Booted from Heaven for my sin, I serve my penance as a reaper. By collecting history’s most twisted souls, I work to one day earn my ticket home.

Case #664

She took an axe and gave her mother forty whacks, and now... Death is coming for Lizzie Borden. Is she innocent? Guilty? I don’t know or care. Reapers have gone missing on their hunt to harvest the soul of the notorious axe murderer and I can’t afford to let my guard down. Scythe gripped tight, I’m marching into the past to deliver final judgement to Lizzie’s doorstep.

Borden may have a creepy ass rhyme, but I’m an ex-angel with nothing but time. Her father got forty-one whacks, now it’s time she learns reaping is the real pain in the axe.

Review

Rourke's sharp tongue and quick wit lends a hauntingly poetic, albeit humorous, prose to her new series, Fear the Reaper.

The veil is lifting and Nyx is finally seeing things a bit more clearly. (It's about time!) Lucifer is up definitely up to something wicked. In Reaping a Pain in the Axe, Nyx is faced with the challenge of reaping the soul of Lizzie Borden. Desparate to see the good in people, Nyx just might lose her head, literally.

I'm so glad these novellas drop every 30 days because that ending left me with far more questions than answers. Wowzers!

Magic Awakened: a More than Magic serial

(Rise of the Arcanist Book 3) - Elizabeth Kirke

Picture
Clear waters, pristine beaches, and the bones of human sacrifices…

"Part fantasy, part mystery, all awesomeness" - 5 star review from award-winning book blog, 2 Girls and a Book

They say it took one hundred magical beings to defeat the first Arcanist. Great care was taken to ensure the secret to his malevolent power died with him. Now the brutal reign of the Arcanist has become little more than a scary bedtime story. And yet, the descendants of his loyal followers are sworn to find a way to bestow his dark magic upon another. If they succeed, they’ll unleash a new terror upon an unsuspecting world.

On the surface, it looks like a tropical paradise, but the island is hiding a sinister secret: it’s teeming with blood witches. Brought there against her will, Jen knows that she has to escape and warn the magical world about what she has learned. Staying means certain death, but trying to escape looks just as lethal.

Magic Awakened is Book Three in the Urban Fantasy series, Rise of the Arcanist, featuring dark witches, mermaids, werewolves, and more. It is a New Adult spin-off of USA Today Bestselling author Elizabeth Kirke’s award-winning More than Magic series. If you like your paranormal a little dark and creepy, take a vacation with Magic Awakened today.

Rise of the Arcanist is a six book serial, with each installment releasing a month apart. You do *not* have to read the original More than Magic trilogy to enjoy it.*

Elizabeth Kirke is trying to give me a heart attack! In the latest installment of Rise of the Arcanist, Magic Awakened, Kirke literally tried to kill off the entire cast. The only thing that got me through was knowing there are additional books coming and someone has to be in them. Kirke knocks up the intensity level with each book in this series. I'm already a nervous wreck. How will I make it the end?

The Death of an Enemy, Bk 5 - Amy Richie

While closing in on the killer is exactly what they want, it has some serious consequences that even Avery Lewis might not be able to escape.

Oh. My. Gosh.

How can you leave me with a cliffhanger like that? This installment answered so many question but left me with so many more. I flew through the story in less than an hour (it's a novella). The secrets are coming into the light and I cannot wait till the next book.

Ghost from the Grave - Carolyn Ridder Aspenson

Picture
Contrary to what many people think, most ghosts aren’t all that chatty. They like to pop in and out and leave cryptic messages that take forever to figure out.

Take the groundskeeper at my son’s lacrosse park: I know he’s trying to tell me something, but his mysterious messages and finger-pointing are impossible to understand.

And when my son’s lacrosse teammate goes missing, I know that ghost knows something. But getting him to talk about it is harder than getting my teenager to unplug from his video game!

Just as the puzzle begins to take shape, I start to realize that the situation is even worse than I had thought.
And then my own son disappears.
Now it’s all-out war...
Because nothing can stop a mother from saving her child.
If you like Southern paranormal cozy mysteries, you’ll love this stand-alone cozy mystery!

In Ghost from the Grave, we see a whole new side to Chantilly. She goes into full momma bear mode when one of her son's lacrosse teammates goes missing. With the help of her friends and the ghost of a groundskeeper, Chantilly tries to solve the mystery before it strikes at her own front door.

Y'all there is scene where Thelma pumps a shotgun one handed and that alone is reason enough to read this book! Thelma is a total badass! Who knew?

The Chantilly Adair series is Steel Magnolias, The Golden Girls, and Ghost Whisperer rolled into one sweet laugh out loud paranormal mysetery series. Aspenson creates a quaint town filled with eccentric characters and I want to move in immediately

Mothman Mysteries Books 1 & 2 By Bryna Butler

Picture
Eric Jansen is an alien. Offworlder. Take me to your leader, fall from the sky, space invading, phoning home, UFO jockey. A swipe of the tattoo on his arm will reveal his true form which locals call Mothman, a winged creature formed of ashen gray skin and glowing red eyes.

So when the recently deceased of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, start walking and talking, the Men in Black mark Eric as suspect number one. It will be up to Eric and the girl-next-door book blogger to solve the mystery before the black suits lock him up and throw away the key.

Are you ready for some campy fun? Fans of Doctor Who will love Wrong Side of the Grave, a suspenseful Teen Paranormal Mystery with a sci-fi twist. Grade 5 and up.

Check out the paperback with Special Edition cover designed by Joshua Labello of Envy Ink and behind the scenes commentary on the making of the cover on the author's site.

Review

Butler weaves multiple genres together seamlessly in her Mothman Mysteries series. The fast-paced YA story twists supernatural beings with sci-fi technology and a dash of romance. Wrong Side of the Grave is a great start to the series.

Narrator James Fouhey does a nice job of bringing Eric Jansen and the other characters to life.

Where will you be when all hail breaks loose?

When a mysterious new player wields a deadly storm to force the men in black into lockdown, teens Eric and Bridget are suddenly separated. With Bridget on the inside and Eric on the outside, the two race to beat the clock and open the doors before the suits make the ultimate sacrifice to prevent the base from falling into the wrong hands.

Get ready for a quirky thrill ride full of spunky book blogger rants, sneaky twists, liberally-used nicknames, smoldering smirks from Mothman, and even a hippy vampire. Hold on kiddos, it's Mothman verses the Weather Machine!

The Mothman Mysteries are set in the same universe with the same characters, but the books are stand-alone mysteries and can be heard in any order. Considered a clean teen series, suitable for pre-teens. A humorous young adult paranormal mystery for fans of Doctor Who and The Dresden Files.

Review

I enjoyed this installment in the Mothman Mysteries a lot better than book 1. Why? Two words - nonstop action! This one was a nail biter.

Michael Nola was great as the narrator. The urgency of the story really came across in his narration.
