Excerpt from Carbon:
There was a bang across the hall as Max strutted in. His usual smooth grin hit me from across the room as he filled up a bowl full of slop. Amusement tugged at the corner of his mouth when I scowled back at him and he parked himself down across from me.
âDo you mind?â he asked.
âItâs a free world.â I shrugged.
He snorted. This was his usual game, finding any way to annoy me. Even sitting down across from me irritated me to no end, but I did my best to ignore him and returned to stirring my cold food.
We were both silent as Max moved his food around with his spoon for a few minutes before he let out a heavy sigh. Max placed the bowl onto the floor where Chevy was waiting eagerly to gobble it all down.
âI canât eat any more of this garbage,â he grumbled.
âKeep your voice down,â I hushed.
âOh, come on. Itâs not like youâre eating it either. Everyone knows it sucks. Iâm not saying anything youâre not already thinking.â He gestured to my still-full bowl, now cold from sitting for so long.
âWeâre guests here. Show a little respect.â My voice was quiet but stern.
Max leaned into the table, surveying my body, my face, and my mouth. âThen you eat it,â he challenged me. âEat more than one bite, and Iâll stop complaining.â He raised an eyebrow. I wasnât sure if he was trying to piss me off, or if the hint of worry and pleading in his voice I detected was begging me to eat something. Anything. Iâd been starving myself unintentionally, but it was hard to focus on things like eating when there was so much rattling my brain.
I didnât look away, and I didnât touch the spoon that still sat in my cold food. Crossing my arms, I settled in to wait him out, unwilling to let him win even one battle with me.
His shoulders slumped, and I realized worry indeed was hidden behind his feeble challenge. He pushed his chair back hard, clenching his jaw tightly, as he picked up the empty bowl from Chevy. âDidnât think so. Looks like weâre both going to starve to death in this metal trap.â
I rolled my eyes, âIâll be fine. Youâre the one who will suffer, not me.â
He swaggered around the table and leaned in so close that his breath tickled my neck, but I didnât flinch or look away. His gaze swept from my head to my toes once again. âIâm not the one who needs to save a dying world. I donât need to be in peak condition or feed a body that isnât quite human. Iâm not the one whoâll suffer. Everyone else will if you donât stop moping around and feeling sorry for yourself.â His cold glare was like ice in my veins as he stepped away. With a slight smirk, he spun on his heels and left before Iâd even blinked, leaving a shudder down my spine.
His words rang in my ears, âa body that isnât quite human.â I was a Carbon now, no longer human, even though every instinct inside of me was wired to protect humans, not hurt them. That was why they all looked at me differently, why Max looked at me with prying eyes as if he was trying to figure out what exactly I was. I was different, yet I found myself forgetting that at times.
But I wasnât a hero anymore. I was no longer someone or something to be proud of. There was a monster living inside of me, waiting to break free. And the weight of everything he said was the reason I hadnât slept in weeks or eaten in days. I wanted to do something about it. I wanted to be better. But every time I thought of it, the guilt and pain took over, and I could barely breathe without breaking down. I often wondered what Kenzie would think if he saw me, or if he knew what I wasâwhat I had become. Would he look at me like he used to? Or would he look at me with disgust for what I let happen to me? What I let myself become?
Chevy sat at my side, pawing at my leg, as he looked up with worried eyes. I stroked his head as I looked at my bowl of slop with a groan. My hand quivered as I took a tentative bite and fought the gag threatening to bring the food back up. With a long, hard swallow, I took another bite and anotherâuntil the bowl was empty.
And I couldâve sworn I saw the door to the hall close a crack more than it had been before.

“My name is Angel, and today is my one-year anniversary of sobriety,” I said into the microphone at my weekly AA meeting. Dozens of faces stared up at me, ranging from newly sober to people celebrating decades of sobriety. Twirling my year chip in my hand, I smiled at how far I’d come.
“Last year I spent Thanksgiving in rehab talking with my friends through Skype for a few short minutes. This year on Thanksgiving, I had so much to be thankful for. My friends accepted me back into their lives and forgave me for my actions when I was under the influence of alcohol. Rehab gave me more than sobriety. It gave me my life back and it gave me two friendships, which I will cherish for eternity. Only one of them is here with me today. Gus-Gus.”
Gus walked down the aisle to me and gave me a hug at the podium. His strong embrace was the best high I could achieve without falling off the wagon. He stood by me as I continued my story. “The biggest struggle in maintaining sobriety for me is grief. I don’t deal well with it on my own. Gus and I were in rehab with a man named Mike. He was a sweet southern gentleman who never hurt anyone other than himself. Two months ago, he committed suicide.” Gus grabbed my hand, squeezing for support. “Gus called to tell me, and the first thing I did was pick up a bottle of Jack Daniel’s at the liquor store. I cried until I couldn’t cry anymore, and then I opened the bottle and poured a glass. As I took in the scent of whiskey, my old friend, I picked up my phone and dialed Gus. He came over immediately, and instead of drinking, we sat and traded stories of Mike and laughed about his thick southern accent and his goofy behavior.”
I held Gus’s hand up in the air. “This man is the reason I am sober today.” Everyone in the room gave Gus and me a standing ovation. We embraced and cried for a few moments over our lost friend and our mutual sobriety. Mike’s death had been hard on both of us. We felt we should’ve known he was ready to break, but deep down we knew there was nothing we could have done. After reading his suicide note, which mentioned only Gus and me, other than his wife and the child he never met, it gave us a little peace knowing we meant so much to him.

Saving Jenna
Christina Butrum August 24, 2018 Contemporary Blurb
Jenna knew it was Ian Riley the second she saw him, but she refused to get her hopes up. He had left once before, and nothing would stop him from leaving again.
Coming back to West Grove was the last thing Ian wanted to do. If it hadn't been for the rental property, the small town would've never seen him again. Two weeks and he'd be gone. Until he sees Jenna Avery and realizes there's more than a house needing repaired. The only problem - Two weeks may not be enough time to save her. Crystal's Review![]() My rating: 5 of 5 stars This book deals with a hard topic. Christina handled it well. There was some back and forth between what was though, and what was really done. It just showed that you never truly know what you would do until you are put in that position. I loved Todd, Cat, and G2 also. I could relate to the characters in different ways. I recommend this read! View all my reviews
