Told from Rhett’s point of you.
If Ava could see herself, the sight would have stopped her cold. Even Rhett was afraid. The hair on his arm rose. His goosebumps had goosebumps.
Ava had absorbed Mia’s energy. Blue light zapped and crackled not only through her, but around her like an electric storm. She became the lightning and wind, uplifting everything around her. The ground shook, walls trembled, and lightbulbs popped like gunshots. Centered in the brilliant phenomenon, she was Mother Nature about to unleash her wrath.
“Holy mother of all mothers.” Ozzie’s jaw slackened. “Do you see what I see, Rhett?”
“Yes,” Rhett said with a grim smile. “That’s my girl. I hope she gives them hell.”
Mia stood her ground. Rhett gave her credit for courage but she was a fool. Rhett knew Ava would make the right choice, so he didn’t try to stop her.
“Well, what’s it going to be, Mia?” Ava’s voice sounded as grand as her display of powers.
Rhett was learning something new about Ava every time she pushed herself, though he worried she might burst. He had no idea how her ability worked.
“I’m not going to apologize, you freak.”
Oh, no. She did not just say that.
“Uh oh.” Ozzie crouched lower. “Ava hates that word.”
Four massage tables zoomed across the room at a flick of Ava’s finger, boxing in the girls.
“Like this is going to stop me. Pathetic,” Mia spat.
Mia didn’t know when to quit. Ava didn’t want to hurt her, but she kept punching Ava with insults. Rhett had to do something.
Ava’s hands trembled. Her body was shutting down.
“No, they weren’t intended to hurt you, and they certainly won’t hold you in.” Ava shook her thin shoulders. “That was a distraction—this will do the damage.” Ava flicked her index finger. A metal tray flew off the counter like a rocket and collided with Mia’s face, knocking her head to the table. “The table is to break your fall, idiot. I was being generous. What about you, Ella? Want to walk with me or be carried out like your friend?”
Ella blanched and softened her stance, giving the impression of compliance. Her voice squeaked like a frightened mouse. “I was going to cooperate. I swear I was. I’ll walk.”
Poor girl. She shook with her arms crossed over her midsection.
The door slid open.
“Why are you all wet? What happened here?” Naomi cursed, her eyes darting around the wrecked room. “Are you guys okay?”
Ozzie pointed to Ava, gawking at her as if she was a goddess. “She did it. It was pretty awesome.”
Tamara laughed. “I should have been here earlier to see it all. The sounds did not do it justice.”
Reyna smoothed a hand over her face. “We’re in so much trouble. Zen’s not going to like this. It’s a good thing this room had no windows.”
“Well, at least we’re all going down together.” Rhett planted a kiss on his girl and supported her with an arm around her waist. When she’d stopped the bullets at Mitch’s apartment, she’d fainted. “You okay?”
Rhett gripped her shaky hand. So cold. All the warmth flushed out of her when Helix had diminished or had burned out. Or however her power worked.
“Yeah. Just a little lightheaded. At least I didn’t black out. I got a little carried away.”
“A little. Just a little.” Rhett chuckled to lighten the mood.
“Are you and Oz okay?” She examined him. “You’re wet.”
“Oz and I are fine. Do you want a change of clothes? We could try to find—”
“No. Let’s get out of here.”
Rhett was worried about her. How much could her body take?
Ava had practiced every spare second. Anyone else would be wiped out, but maybe someone like her didn’t need a lot of time to recover. If Helix could replenish her quickly, then perhaps it was all good.
“Come on. Someone want to help me drag this lunatic?” Ozzie’s shoes squeaked and squashed through two inches of water as he headed toward Mia. “Yup, Zen is going to flip out. Can we pretend it didn’t happen? Or do one of you girls have the power to put everything back together? Why can’t I have that kind of power? Why am I talking and nobody is answering me?”
“‘Cause you talk too much, Ozwald.” Rhett grabbed Mia’s other arm and hauled her up with Ozzie’s help.
Ozzie’s mouth scrunched together into a pout. “Ozzie. It’s Ozzie or Oz.”
How Rhett loved to mess with him, and Rhett knew Ozzie liked it, too, since he did the same to Rhett. It was the way they were.

My entire life has been weaved with violence. It wasn’t something that was sought out, but something that found me. My calmness in the face of danger is what drew the monsters to me. Eduardo tried recruiting me long ago back before he fully grew into the devil he is. Back then, I was still a novice; his world still turned me on. But lately, living the simple life seems like a better option moving forward. At the end of the day, if no one knew my name, I’d be fine with that.

Author Interview

1. Why do you write?
I love creating a solid world for the ghost-like stories that flit across my imagination. I write to see where the story will go and what the hero or heroine will do. I find that the story form is often the best way to explore relationships, deep ideas, and flights of fancy. I understand the world, others, and myself better as I write.

A huge bonus of publishing is seeing the joy of my readers as they experience those worlds and explore those ideas.

2. What inspired you to become an author, and how old were you at the time?
Some of my earliest memories are laying on the carpet listening to my dad read. We explored the worlds of Narnia and Middle Earth. We cried with Corrie Ten Boom in The Hiding Place. We voyaged with The Kon-Tiki and to Grass Beyond the Mountains.

As a teen I made up stories to help my little sisters go to sleep. It backfired. We stayed up for hours continuing the tale. The King’s Trial was born in those late, whispered nights.

I started writing seriously when my youngest child slept consistently through the night.

3. How much time per week would you spend writing? Or are you a full-time author?
I'm a full-time mother of six.

I write in the early morning before anyone wakes up, sometimes in the afternoon when kids are playing, and in the evening when my husband plays with our kids. The early morning hours are my favorite and most productive writing times. On a good day I can get several thousand words before anyone else wakes up.

I keep a notebook handy to capture ideas when I don't have time to write. My rushed penmanship is near unreadable, even for me, so I type up all my notes each evening.

4. Do you have any tips to any aspiring authors or writers?

Write every day. Even if it’s a hundred words. Try flash fiction. Try poetry. Explore the different types of writing. Find what you love.

I spent about twelve years of motherhood where the only writing I did was journaling. But those twelve years of journaling added up to a couple million words and when I reached the phase of life when I had time to create stories, I’d already developed a writing habit.

Find some beta-readers or a critique group. Writing is a very personal endeavor but beta-readers help the writer see the story’s blind spots and they also help cheer the writer on when in a writer’s slump.

Get an ergonomic keyboard. It’s a life saver on the wrists.

5. What gets your creative juices going?

Dreams. I live with a vivid imagination. I dream in 3-D, technicolor, and occasionally with my eyes open. This is a bane when it comes to nightmares. I will not watch horror movies. This same imagination makes writing easier. I not only see but also experience what I'm writing. Some nights I wake up with whole scenes playing through my head, vivid with setting, dialog, action, and emotion. I scribble furiously in the 2am glow of the kitchen nightlight, then catch more sleep.

Another creative jump-start is talking out story ideas with my husband, children, or my writing friends.

Most of all, books are fuel to my imagination. I read all the time and in many genres.

6. Which character was the easiest to write, and who was the hardest to write?

Halavant was easy. He came with personality and voice. I just typed what he said and did, though there were a few times I had to tone down his words.

Katrin changed from draft to draft until I was ready to just remove her from the story. Then I found her, the true her under all her pride and show, and finally understood her.

Yosyph was in between the other two in difficulty. He’s a private person, who didn’t acknowledge his own emotions at the start of the story. He became easier to write as he grew and developed, though he remained true to his solitary character.

7. If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would you choose? What food would you serve?

Galliard. He makes me laugh. He also isn’t particular about food. He’d be happy with a wrinkled apple or porridge, as long as the company is pleasant. I’d serve a chicken-bacon-poppyseed salad, fresh baked sourdough bread slathered in butter, and grapes to the side.

8. Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.

I posted an audition script on ACX along with a synopsis of my book and specifics on each character. After I received many auditions, I shared the recordings with a select number of readers to get their responses. I finally selected one narrator who captured the voicing and personality of my characters best.

The narrator, Neal Arango, is a joy to work with. He asked detailed questions. I sent him pronunciation guides and further information on each character and story setting. He recorded and posted each chapter. I listened to each, made notes of any little changes, and he made adjustments as needed.

I'm grateful for Mr. Arango's talented and professional work, his quick responses, and his efforts to create the story as I envisioned it sounding. He did excellent work.

9. What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?

Some of my first memories were of my dad reading to us. I read to my kids almost daily. Isn't that an audio book experience? A good story, whether taken in through the eyes or the ears, is still a good story—and worth enjoying, learning from, and growing through.

Other personal blessings and benefits of audio books. 1) We can listen while traveling, cleaning, and waiting. 2) One of my sons has dyslexia. Audio books open up a world of stories he'd otherwise likely never experience. 3) Audio books allow us to survive our yearly 22-hour drive to see extended family with most of our sanity, and even enjoy it.

10. What about you as a person? What do you do to relax? Favorite movies or tv shows? Hobbies?
I’m a book loving, tree climbing, adventurous, curious, philosophical, mother of six.

I write to relax. It energizes me and gives me a break. I also relax by reading. There are so many good books that I rarely take time to watch a movie, though I thoroughly enjoy Pixar and Studio Ghibli.

Current Hobbies:
– Concocting new varieties of salads so we don’t heat our house. We have no AC, so it is a fun challenge in the summer.
– Reading to my children, using all the character voices. Right now we are reading The Legendary Inge, by Kate Stradling.
– “Geeking out” with my husband—talking about fun, random happenings and deep, philosophical ideas.
– Climbing: trees, firemen poles, mountains, rock walls, etc.

Other hobbies that I haven’t done in a while but I’d love to do again:
- scuba diving
- horseback riding

Interview with Felicia Palmer

How did you wind up narrating audiobooks? Was it always your goal or was it something you stumbled into by chance?
It was something I stumbled on. A good friend started doing it and it just sounded like fun to me..
A lot of narrators seem to have a background in theatre. Is that something you think is essential to a successful narration career?
I do think that having some acting training is vital if you intend to do fiction but the very most important quality is the ability to tell a story well.
What type of training have you undergone?
I have a degree in Theatre. :)

Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
I do love audiobooks. I think the ability to multi-task to a certain extent is great. It’s hard to read a book and walk at the same time so being able to listen and move around is great.

What would you say are your strongest narration abilities?
I think I’m a really good storyteller.

How did you decide how each character should sound in this title?
Like my other titles, I think about who I could see playing them in a movie or a play and then I picture that person as I’m reading their part.

How does audiobook narration differ from other types of voiceover work you've done? Audiobook Narration is it’s own thing. You’re playing all the characters. Some of whom you would never be cast to play in a show which makes it a lot of fun. It also means you’re working on it for a lot more time than you would, say, a commercial spot. Do you read reviews for your audiobooks

Not anymore.

If so, which ones stand out to you most, positive or negative? The Negative unfortunately.
What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
To each her own. I don’t think it’s cheating but I get the desire to read it           yourself. As long as you keep reading, in whatever form, I’m all for it.

 What’s next for you?
I'm currently working on two projects including another one in this series.

Mystically bonded to Larken, the pair must band together for the fight to come if either hope to make it out alive. Neither anticipated the passion that would ignite between them. Yet, in a world suddenly thrust into chaos, it may be the key to their survival.
The Zodia are out for blood with their attentions inexplicably focused on Larken. When long buried truths finally come to light, will their love be their salvation or their curse?

Blurb:

Devlin

A group of humans, banshees, reapers, and lorcan walk into Hollow Earth … It sounded like the start of a bad joke, but this was our insane reality. By Taryn’s side, I entered a land neither of us had ever been to, to fight battles with impossible odds, and dance alongside a destiny neither Taryn or I fully understood.

Taryn

Marching into Hollow Earth alongside my deranged lorcan brother is beyond mental, but what choice do I have? I have need of an army if I hope to overthrow King Baylor and free my people. But that means I have to place my trust in my sworn enemy. The fate of Netherworld and the Human Realm falls heavily on my shoulders. Only I can restore peace … but first I’ll have to walk through a literal Hell with Devlin to do it.

Early Reviews

I was excited to dive back into this series and couldn’t wait to see what happened. From the beginning I loved the characters and the storyline kept me intrigued throughout. I must say there are some interesting little twists here and there and that made me love it even more. Not going to lie might want to throw your book at a couple spots too... but don’t especially if it’s a kindle or your phone... might not end well - and you will want to see how it ends. My only issue with it... it’s the last one! Or is it? Hey I can dream can’t I? -All About Books Divas

It was amazing! I can’t believe that this is the last book!! I never want it to end, but good things always come to an end and I couldn’t think of a better ending to this series than this book. Both Amy and Danielle made me leak out of my eyes. They made me smile until my face hurt and they made feel what the characters were feeling.

Beautifully written. The story line is perfect. Jumping back into this series was like visiting old friends, we picked up right where we left off. Sure there are going to be times your like oh crap and a cracker!! But those oh crap times are completely worth it.

Get Isle of Glass and see what is going to happen. You won’t be disappointed at all!! -Kelly McCurdy

I really enjoyed this series which was a collaboration of the authors of two different genres. Their styles meshed together beautifully to create an extremely compelling story. The wait for the conclusion was torture. Taryn and Devlin were an unlikely couple spanning 2 realms but they were determined to beat the odds to be together. Isle of Glass covers the adventures of 3 couples trying to survive Hollow Earth to get Seamus and Alana to the Isle of Glass and its healing waters. The ending was not what I had envisioned, but it was a perfect end to the series. Thank you Danielle and Amy for this amazing journey. -Jeanne McCartney
