SOME TRUTHS ARE BETTER KEPT SECRET. SOME SECRETS ARE BETTER OFF DEAD.

ALONG THE BANKS OF THE BOGUE FALAYA RIVER, sits the abandoned St. Francis Seminary. Beneath a canopy of oaks, blocked from prying eyes, the teens of St. Benedict High gather here on Fridays. The rest of the week belongs to school and family—but weekends belong to the river.

And the river belongs to Beau Devereaux.

The only child of a powerful family, Beau can do no wrong. Star quarterback. Handsome. Charming. The “prince” of St. Benedict is the ultimate catch.

He is also a psychopath.

A dirty family secret buried for years, Beau’s evil grows unchecked. In the shadows of the haunted abbey, he commits unspeakable acts on his victims and ensures their silence with threats and intimidation. Senior year, Beau sets his sights on his girlfriend’s headstrong twin sister, Leslie, who hates him. Everything he wants but cannot have, she will be his ultimate prize.

As the victim toll mounts, it becomes clear that someone must stop Beau Devereaux.

And that someone will pay with their life.

My Review

5 STARS

River of Ashes will forever haunt me. This psychological thriller has tormented my nights my days and filled my days with trepidation. This shocking psychological thriller is a masterpiece is not for the faint of heart. Despite that, or perhaps because of it, I could not put this book down. I had to know what made Beau Devereaux tick.

Some truths are better kept secret.
Some secrets are better off dead.

The blurb says it best, Beau Devereaux is an “American Psycho!” His twisted sense of self-worth and penchant for pain oozes from the pages and leaves you feeling dirty for having shared space with him. He is the epitome of evil. This dark, twisted, thriller is quite the page-turner from beginning to end.

The ending (no spoilers) is poetic. Karma is a BITCH!

EN ROUTE The Best Is Yet To Be
by Elora Canne

Genre: Travel Memoir with a dash of Stealth Help
Release Date: 3 February 2022
EN ROUTE covers the challenges and elations of travelling in a campervan, fighting off cabin fever and coyote’s and peeling away relationship detritus as Elora and her husband travel the world.

A sizeable segment of their travels included family and friends which came with its own humour of entanglement and unexpected train rides. Included are the growing pains endured along the way as Elora discusses her angst in coping with what should be a memorable adventure. EN ROUTE spans a period of about 10 years, beginning with immigration trials andtribulations from South Africa to Australia with two teenage boys. New discoveries emerge about each other whilst the family adapts to their new surroundings.

Part of Elora’s learning curve was discovering how to live with herself and the decisions she has made as she navigates the challenges of her marital rifts. Elora covers revealing nuances about her and her husband, James, committing themselves to each other despite their, sometimes, apparent distaste for each other.

Other relationships that were cemented through their travels were with Elora’s mum and sister as they re-learnt to simply be together in trying times. The infamous in-law relationship is also tentatively touched upon.

The sudden loss of Elora’s dad plays a poignant role in how she managed to cope with the impact of his death on her psyche.

As she reflects on the transience of love in all its forms, Elora’s self-empowerment grows into finding peace; finding voice and mightily so.

Their travels crossed the lands of South Africa, America, Europe, United Kingdom, Ireland, Asia and, of course, Australia. Included in these tales are stories of crime, love, loss, pets, friends, tourist highlights and treasure troves of magick.

Sometimes sombre; sometimes humorous; always enlightening. En route suggests on the way and the sub-title suggests the thrill of hope and pleasure and better things to come. What do I mean by that? Change does not only occur outwardly as time evolves our circumstances, but also inwardly, in a way that is not openly shown.  This unraveling is a magical mix of discovering past heritage and losing yourself in imagination of yesteryear and folklore. A travel memoir that intertwines humour, quirky facts and the treasures in each of our relationships across all whom we encounter on our trip around the sun. A gap year that will have you packing your bags and leaving on the next flight into the
unknown.

Retired from 20+ years in the childcare industry, Elora now spends her semi-retired time writing, paddleboarding and reading, reading, reading! Elora's writing process began with a blog of her and her husband, James', gap year travels. As the years' travels wore on, she realised there was a lot more to write about with the evolving of their relationship as time lapsed. Enter EN ROUTE a self-published memoir of road trips and relationships.

Elora speaks with raw openness about her relationships across all dynamics. She reveals nuances that expose her insecurities and resultant growth with naive honesty. Elora shows us how she copes with mother-guilt, people-pleasing and intimacy with an unusual blend of insight, pain and resolution. Her candid disclosures are sometimes sombre, sometimes humorous and always enlightening.

“You’re not a serial killer or ax murderer, are you?” She speaks up. I want to laugh out loud, but I’m sure that won’t bode well with trying to get her into my truck. But c’mon, who would admit that if they were? Surely, she isn’t serious. She crosses her arms over her chest, and it takes everything in me not to let my eyes follow. She’s actually waiting for an answer to that ridiculous question.

“I can promise you I’m not. My name is Huxley Lair, and I’m staying with my mother for a bit in Marietta.” I don’t have to ask if she’s from Marietta. A beauty like her would be well known around such a small town. I haven’t had time to scroll through my list of prospects for sex because I’ve only been back in town for a few weeks, but if she was any other woman, I’d definitely have a go at her. Too bad she is off limits… saved by the job.

“Well, thank you for your generosity, mister. My name is Goddess. I guess a ride would be nice.” The way she says ride has my mind taking a trip straight to the gutter. I need to snap out of this lust. I’m quite aware of what her name is, but I continue to play my part— the stranger who happened to find her along the road.

Interview with Alex Bonner

What type of training have you undergone?
After graduating from the University of Miami (BBA), I moved to New York to train as an actor. I was lucky to start my work with students in the Columbia MFA program as an actor used in scenes run for classroom discussion. I learned a great deal from the faculty there, and through it met the wonderful director Peter Miner, who invited me to take his scene study course at the Terry Schreiber Studio in Chelsea. Peter is a fantastic teacher, and he guided me towards the next chapter of my training, a two year Meisner program I attended at Playhouse West Brooklyn. Under the instruction of actors Jim Parrack and Andrea Dantas, I learned what it meant to live truthfully under imaginary circumstances, to connect myself deeply to my work, and most of all, to give myself freely to my partner. It was my first experience in theater, and it was magic. All of the things I’d never been asked to say or never had the courage to do had a place on stage.

A lot of narrators seem to have a background in theatre. Is that something you think is essential to a successful narration career?
It might not be essential, but it's definitely helpful! I think a good read can only be enhanced by training, and quality technique can really help in bringing the characters to life. This can be especially true on the days you might not feel up to record! You could've stepped in gum on the way to the studio and got caught in the rain, but the script calls for you to have the best day of your life for that take. Theater training can help the actor bring their whole person to any project, despite any obstacles life throws in your way.

How do you manage to avoid burn-out?
Recording and producing a book is a marathon, and not a sprint. Organization is key, and it helps to create unbreakable contracts with yourself to hit your milestones for each day. If you've got 5 chapters for that day, make it all the way to 5 chapters. That also means that if you crush a recording session and have time for extra chapters, give yourself a break and say "jobs done for today, I did what I set out to do for this project, now I need to do what I need for me". Spending time with your family and self care is essential. If you're running into that often, you can always increase your goals for output. But keeping a promise to yourself is an investment in self confidence.

What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for narrating?
No holds barred in the booth! Sing, dance, and do whatever silly thing that will put you in a mindset of "no wrong answers here".

How closely do you prefer to work with authors?

I really love working closely with authors! Sometimes it's fun to start the work with a blank slate and fill in the gaps with your own imagination. Your instincts can open up a character in really cool ways. Other times, having conversations with the author about the story and characters can feel like getting a peel at the answer key to an upcoming test. Specificity is key; the more specific I can make a read or character, the more alive that character will be, and ultimately in line with the authors vision.

Excerpt...

Beau sat by a tree, keeping his lamp off and letting his eyes adjust to the utter blackness around him. He listened to the night, zeroing in on any hint that Jenson was nearby. He breathed in the cool air, feeling powerful. Beau loved the night and relished the mysterious woods around his home. He loved disappearing into them when he was a child, back when he’d sneak out his bedroom window after his parents went to sleep and would roam the dark trails.
Beau learned a lot during his nightly wanderings. He’d set traps, and when he captured something small, like a squirrel or possum, he’d amuse himself. His father caught him climbing back in his bedroom window one night, covered in blood. That was when Gage put in an alarm, bringing his activities to an end.
Thrashing arose to his left. Beau waited by the tree, knowing his prey was near. Nothing moved like a man in the woods, and a frightened one was louder than a bullhorn on a still night.
The bumbling obstacle to Beau’s winning season quickly approached. He held his breath, excited by the fluttering in his stomach. He held off his attack until he could see Jenson’s thick shape in front of him.
Beau pushed off the ground and tackled the useless fool.
Jenson cried out, and his weight sent him tumbling into a deep hole.
Beau grinned as he heard him groaning from its depths. He removed a ChemLight from the side pocket of his camo pants and cracked it. An eerie greenish light expanded outward, illuminating the old farm well Beau had uncovered earlier that day. “You okay down there, Jenny?”
“Beau?” Jenson sounded petrified. “Is that you? Get me out of here, man.”
Beau stepped closer to the edge of the dry well. “Not ready to do that quite yet.” He dropped the green light into the hole and saw Jenson cowering against the wall.
“Get me out of here!” Jenson screamed.
“Sorry, Jenny. You, ah, might want to keep an eye out. You’re not alone in there.”
Jenson snatched up the glow stick and waved it around. Then he froze. The ghostly light illuminated a snake coiled up to the side.
His shriek was music to Beau’s ears. “It’s hard to say what I put in there with you. It was dark, so I couldn’t tell if your little friend is venomous or not.”
“Come on,” Jenson hollered. “This isn’t funny.”
“Maybe not to you,” Beau grinned. “But I bet you’ll move your lard ass and block whatever comes my way from now on.”
“I’m sorry, Beau. I’m sorry,” Jenson whimpered. “Please get me out of here.”
Beau went to his backpack, which rested at the base of a tree. “Now I want you to sit there and think about how you’re not gonna screw up again. I can’t have you making me look bad.” He slipped the pack around his shoulder. “Got that, Jenny?”
“Please, I won’t mess up again!”
Jenson’s voice reminded Beau of a woman in a horror movie—high-pitched and about to meet her maker.
“No, you won’t.” Beau chuckled. “Or I might have to come up with a worse punishment.”
He flipped on his flashlight and scoured the ground, looking for the trail back to camp. Beau could thank his father for that. Gage was a stickler for making it easy to get around the uncleared portions of the estate. Tonight, Beau had taken full advantage.
Screams followed him as he moved deeper into the woods. The hours he’d spent planning Jenson’s tomblike confines were worth it.
The land around his home was a haven, but he preferred the shores along the river. He might be the heir apparent, but he wasn’t in control—Gage was. Only at the river was he king.
Flames danced through the trees. Beau switched off his flashlight and followed the orange glow back to his friends.
Mitch and Josh sat by the fire pit, their dog masks abandoned at their feet. They turned when they heard Beau coming.
“Where’s Jenson?” Josh stood and looked behind him.
Beau slipped the pack from around his shoulders and warmed his hands. “Don’t know. Lost him in the woods somewhere.”
Mitch went to the break in the trees Beau had come through. “But where? We kept him on the path, just like you said, and stopped chasing him at the marker you showed us.”
Beau sat down and took a bottle of water from his pack. “You two should go look for him. Make sure he’s all right.”
“What if he’s hurt?” Josh asked.
“He’ll be fine. Hopefully, a little wiser and not as clumsy on the field.”
Mitch flipped on a flashlight and glanced at Josh. “Let’s go.”
Beau waited as their crunching through the brush faded. He sat back and looked up at the pinpoints of stars above the treetops. Staring at the sky, he thought about the others he wanted to teach a lesson.
“They’ll never see me coming.”

Picture
Shadows come from the mirror…

And then there are nightmares.

A month after Nora and her friend from the mirror, Jesse, defeated the doppelganger who haunts mirrors, life has returned to normal. For Nora.

A relic from a past era, thirteen-year-old Jesse has a difficult time adjusting to the twenty-first century.

Jesse fears the ghosts of souls, the Bad Ones, lurking in the reflections, are planning on seeping through the mirror and dragging him back.

Only when the voice of a friend from the past begs for his help from inside the mirror, Jesse has to choose between living in fear or facing the Bad Ones in the mirror once and for all.

Lies.

Betrayal.

Hope…

Nothing is as it seems

Review

Note: Read Fake Nora first.

The Bad Ones is the follow-up to Martin's smash hit Fake Nora. We met Jesse in Fake Nora and he was such a compelling character that the fans demanded to hear/read his story. Thus The Bad Ones was born.

Once again I find myself terrified to look too closely at a mirror for fear of what might come crawling through. Poor Jesse thought he had escaped the mirror and the horrors inside but it would seem Reflection Land is not quite done with him.

Kelly Martin is the Queen of Horror whether she is writing YA, NA, or MG. May her reign be long and full of spooktacular books.

Glancing over my shoulder once and waiting a few seconds to ensure no one was coming, I let curiosity get the best of me. I slipped the brown tie off so I wouldn’t have to retie it and undid the paper wrapping around the bottle.

There was a clear liquid inside the bottle. I set it down on the dresser next to me and looked at the short note.

In case it all goes sideways…

Next to the short, ominous sentence was a symbol that froze my blood.

The sentence ended with a dark, shaded-in skull and crossbones.

Starr Valentine, the most popular cheerleader at Middleton High, has led a charmed life. But the day she is chosen as the youngest member ever of homecoming court, is also the day her parents reveal a secret more than a decade old: They are monarchs in exile from a mysterious planet called Vega, and it’s time for all of them to return home.
Best day ever, ruined!
While she likes the idea of being a princess, Starr realizes something is terribly wrong when they arrive on their new world. She’s always been the best-looking girl in the room, but everyone is ignoring her and fawning over her frumpy older sister, Astra, and it doesn’t make sense. Although Astra is the sweetest person around, she’s never even had a date. So why is she now getting all the attention?
Starr soon figures out the awful truth. The standard of beauty on Vega is different, and Starr isn’t pretty anymore. To make matters worse, everybody treats her like she’s annoying and shallow, including an irritatingly handsome young duke named Julian. Can Starr find a way to get noticed again, or is this once beautiful swan doomed to remain an ugly duckling forever?

Interview with Abigail Drake

  1. Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
I’d already worked with my voice artist, Kasey Miracle, in the past, and knew she’d be the perfect fit for “Starr Valentine.” Therefore, the process was rather simple. The first step, listening to auditions for narrators, took only minutes. I knew Kasey would be the right person to bring my characters to life, and I wasn’t wrong! She did an amazing job, and I’m delighted with the results.

2.              Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
I’ve enjoyed listening to audiobooks in many genres. The only ones that are difficult for me personally are books with lots of sexual content. I love reading those books (don’t get me wrong!), and writing them, too, but I get oddly uncomfortable listening to them. I guess I need to get over it. I’m working on a sci-fi romance series with a higher heat level than I usually employ, and plan to make those into audiobooks too.

3.              Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
With “Starr Valentine” I definitely had plans early on to make it into an audiobook. I heard Starr’s voice loud and clear the whole time I was writing it.

4.              How did you select your narrator?
It was so easy, since I already knew Kasey Miracle and wanted her for the job. Normally, I would go to ACX, described the requirements, and accept auditions. You kind of know right away which voice will work and which won’t. It’s an interesting process.

5.              How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
Kasey Miracle is a pro, and we had a great collaboration. I gave her character sketches (just a few lines), to help her out. For example, I would tell her that imagined a certain character would have a gruff voice or a soft voice. When any pronunciation issues came up, she took care of them right away. She was a pleasure to work with—and really quick, too!

6.              Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
Yes, oddly enough! The inspiration for this story came when I was waiting to pick up my oldest son from a tennis match years ago. I noticed a woman standing by the courts who really stood out. She was a big lady, wearing a crazy cacophony of prints and colors, and her curly hair was put up in three odd-looking ponytails on her head. She stood out, but not because of her size or clothing or her hair. She exuded confidence and simply radiated joy, and that was what drew my eye to her. I noticed a girl standing next to her, with similar attributes and clothing. She also seemed very happy and confident, and I assumed they had to be mother and daughter. But then I noticed another girl standing next to them. She had on a plain tennis skirt and shirt, and she was ducking her head, as if embarrassed. And that’s when I began to wonder…what if this girl was also the women’s daughter? What if she was embarrassed about how her mom and older sister looked? What would the family dynamics be like? Because I lived abroad for many years, and saw different ideas about beauty everywhere I visited, another thought occurred to me as well. What if someone was considered to be beautiful, but then they go to another culture where the standard of beauty was different, and they weren’t beautiful anymore? And that’s when Starr Valentine was born.

7.              How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
I think part of the way I avoid burn-out is by writing in several different genres. All of my books are either romances, or have romantic elements, but I write everything from sweet YA to not-so-sweet sci-fi romance. Others have advised me to find a niche and stick with it, and they are probably right, but if I did that, I think I would get burned-out! As far as enthusiasm is concerned, I just love telling stories. I always have, and hopefully I always will. I also love every element of the process involved in creating a book, from the first whisper of an idea, to the rough draft, to edits, and then (my favorite part), getting it into the hands of my readers! When I hear they enjoyed my work, it’s the best thing in the world.

8.              Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
I am an avid audiobook listener. I love the art of oral storytelling, and it truly is an art. I also like that I can listen to a book on a long car ride, or while I’m cleaning or cooking. It gives an escape even while performing mundane tasks, and it makes them easier to complete.

9.              Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
Starr Valentine has such a strong voice, and she’s a really fun character. What came through when I heard Kasey Miracle narrate the book was the essence of Starr’s personality. It’s so interesting what elements a good narrator will uncover!

10.           If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
Gosh. We live in difficult times, but other times were difficult too. The grass is always greener right? But if I could zip back to Regency England and meet Jane Austen, I would definitely be up for that!
