Twenty years ago, Rose and her two best friends cast a love spell that went horribly awry. Not that Rose ever paid that much mind. Focused on her career, she has dreamed of owning her own apothecary since she was just a little witch.

On more than one occasion she has caught her new boss, Bay, snooping around the shop and fears he’s looking for any excuse to let her go.

She thought evoking one little spell couldn’t hurt.
She couldn’t have been more wrong.

Poor choice of wording in the incantation tethers Rose and Bay to disastrous consequences. Will the result blend the perfect potion for romance? Or will it be enough to crush Rose’s career and her love life?

What does a sidekick do when her hero has sacrificed herself to save me? Well, I am going to plot to get her back, that’s what. But the only problem with that is I got myself into a bit of trouble.

Now I owe a favor to an Incubus who’s a tad sketchy and a lot demanding.
Picture
My mate is overprotective and secretive. I need to be more than the sidekick, but when everyone wants me to stay the sidekick, I have to find my own way.

I will get Olezka and me out of this deal with the Incubus, and I will save my best friend, especially after all the times she saved me.

If you gotta die, ending up in Carnage Crossing isn't the worse place to be. With a nod to Beetlejuice, Rourke has created a beautiful macabre tale that kept me glued to kindle and wanting more. I could not enough of the delightfully dark and boisterous new world. The world-building and character development were phenomenal. I am always amazed at the unique and fun new places Rourke takes me.

I am still trying to wrap my head around this story. It wrecked me. If it weren't for bad luck, Roxie DePrive would have no luck at all. They say God doesn't give us more than we can handle. But I don't believe most people could endure 5 failed marriages, heartache after heartache, and the loss Roxie went through. Seriously. I am still shaking my head. At one point my husband held me while I cried and lamented over the constant heartache and loss. I had to read the story in stages, or marriages if you will. I saw the morale of the story but if I were in Roxie's shoes I don't think I would have survived to come on the other side.

Living Water is a beautifully written, morally driven story. Have the tissues handy.

I found myself wondering if Macy had a doppelganger, an evil twin, or was just seeing things each time something new happened. Hale did a great job keeping the reader guessing with a complete blindside moment in the end. Neurosis is a dark, gritty, psychological thriller that is sure to wow fans.

A Word from the Terry

So you’re visiting my little town of Halfway, and Erin Spencer is your guide. Let me explain how Erin’s audition process went:
I, with audacity of a teenaged boy, emailed her and asked her if she would take my series. She auditioned. I listened to fifteen seconds and thought, “Well. That’s that. She is Carlie.” Six books later, I think in Erin’s voice when I write about Halfway, which is a testament to how fully she embodies the people of my town, and Carlie’s world, and even Gus the Judgy cat’s occasional mrrrrowt, which I am told Erin nailed in one take.

I love audiobooks, and listen to my own. For me, audiobooks are like meeting your favorite characters all over again—a kind of magical reset that lets me start over with stories I love, set in places I want to visit. Or live. Or drink coffee in a diner that sits in a town where magic is as common as tourists.

Thanks for visiting Halfway, on behalf of Erin, and me, and everyone else who made the series happen. I hope you laugh along with us, and I’ll see you later this year with Halfway Hatched.

Author Interview

Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
My reading habits have evolved over the years and I used to love to hold a physical book. However, eventually I started to lose storage space! I moved to Kindle, since you can keep a virtual library at your fingertips there. I also do a lot of driving up to our boat. So, when I drive or am cleaning house, I found I really like listening because it makes the tasks go quicker. So, I think I’m more of a hybrid but truly LOVE the audio format and wanted to provide the option for my readers as well. The publishing and production world is quite different though, so, there was a learning curve!
Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
If you mean genre, I don’t think so. I think it’s all about the narrator. A good narrator can make or break the audiobook. That being said, if I am listening to a biography, I’d rather hear the subject of the story do the narration, so I guess that world translate better. In terms of genres or stories though, no. I think a good story is a good story and having someone read it to you well, is universal.
Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
Not with my first book because I heard it was expensive to do. I was just starting out and couldn’t justify the cost at the time. As I wrote more and because I listen to a lot of audiobooks, I really thought it was a medium I wanted for my readers. However, while writing, I do not think a lot about the narration. Perhaps now that I’m getting all of my books turned into audiobooks, I will in the future though!
How did you select your narrator?
I found Kat through an open audition with ACX. She is a really hard worker and tries to give each character their own identity. I think it’s wonderful that she cares as much as I do about my characters and it shows.
How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
There was an initial setup that was quite extensive. My stories involve the Greek gods and the way an American pronounces the names versus a European versus a native Greek speaker are very different. I provided pronunciations and I think she did a great job with them. As I said we had a lot of discussions about characters beforehand but after she started recording, I let her do her thing. We had check in’s where I got to hear the chapters and that was so fun. To hear the words that came from your head, that you wrote down, come to life is really cool! We have a great collaboration going.
Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
There is some. In Releasing the Catch, which is not part of the series, and an off-genre women’s fiction piece, there’s a lot of personal flavors throughout it. In the Heaven & Earth series it’s more mannerisms of people I know, with one exception. My Grandfather, Bert Raymond Bailey. You’ll see a version of one of his names in each book I write because right before he died, he asked me if I would, so he could continue to have adventures. Trust me he was that kind of fun-loving guy. So, I have really enjoyed finding ways to make him shine. Keep an eye, or an ear out.
How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
Hard giggle right now… I’m not going to lie, this past year has been a real challenge. I wrote three stories in 2020, hired an assistant and started doing a lot of behind-the-scenes and structure to my “business.” I am a little burned out. So, I’m took the time to really get those things going, so I can get back to being creative. I really miss writing and quickly get burned out with anything that isn’t that. So, drawing, illustrating, painting, or anything creative, gets the juices flowing again. I’ll let you know if it works!
Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
The emotion. Inflection in some of her voices, that drives home what I was trying to drive home. However, I think voice breathes life into the characters, and hopefully you feel connected in the journey too.
If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
I would without hesitation go back to the early nineties and relive my kids growing up. They are now grown and truly wonderful people. I really loved the whole experience and would love to do it again because it goes so quickly!
If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the primary roles?
Well, when I write the stories and create characters, I actually choose actors/models and have their photos pinned on my desktop. I do this because with actors and model you can see them in different poses, or positions and expressions. It makes envisioning the characters I write come to life for me. In the Warrior’s Progeny, Sam Heughan, from Outlander, was up for Colton Stone, but American not Scottish. Lilly was a model, but if I was to cast her, maybe Mila Kunich. Dee Taylor would be Betty White for sure!
What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
That’s fine, to each his own. Experiencing stories and escaping to new worlds is what it’s all about. Whatever way you do that and enjoy, is completely up to you.
How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
It’s always exciting to finish a novel and usually when I’m at the end of a book, I’ve effectively ignored my family for about a month or so, in the crunch to get it done. I usually try to go out with them, get some dinner, have a family game night, drink some cocktails and this one was no different. Having the support of your family is really crucial.
In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
A stand alone, you’ve told your story and you’re ready to move on to the next story. With a connected series, you might be done with a part of the story but the whole tale has not yet been told. You also have a lot more time to tell the story. So, you can add twists and turns in a super fleshed out way in a series. However, also in writing a series, you need to be committed. Your readers have made the decision to go on this journey with you and you need to provide for them, maybe at times when you might have a great idea for something else.

Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
That’s so funny you asked that, because the series places great importance on dreams and YES, I do, all the time.  And YES, I listen to them!
About the Narrator: Kat Bohn
Kat Bohn’s business - quite simply - is “sound.”  From bass to bellows, New Jersey based performing artist Kat Bohn has spent the last few years performing on legendary stages such as the Gramercy NYC, the NorVA, WXPN’s World Cafe in Philadelphia, and more, and continues to immerse herself in recording. Though 2020 put a halt to stage life, she has enjoyed many successes throughout the year, including being awarded Penned Con’s Most Addictive Audiobook, and receiving local critical acclaim for her original band Resilient’s “Take Two” 2020 EP, for which the band made several music videos in lieu of a live release event. Kat recently narrated award winning sci-fi series the Survival Trilogy by TJ and ML Wolf, and continues to record various musical and voice over projects from her ever expanding home studio. This past year she has taken up the xylophone, and has been doing a lot of vocal experimentation as well.  Never far from a microphone or an instrument, Kat is always ready to play, and enjoys her life as an adult child.

Carlie McEwan loves many things.
She loves being a witch. She loves her town of Halfway, and her Gran, and her familiar, Gus, who is 25 pounds of judgmental cat. Carlie spends her days cooking at the only real diner in town when she isn't perfecting her family magic, and life is good.

When a blond stranger sits at the diner counter and asks her to lead him into the deepest shadows of the forest, her life will change forever. She must find a mythical grove of ancient trees, but there are ghosts in the forest, and one of them cries out to Carlie across the years: Come find me.

With the help of a rugged cop who really does want to save the world, she'll fight to bring a ghost home, and deliver justice to a murderer who hides in the cool, mysterious green of a forest gone mad with magic.

Chatting with Terry Maggert

Why Waffles? Why a diner?
Both of these are excellent questions. The simplest answers are—I love waffles, and I owned a restaurant. But it’s more than that. Carlie is, in a sense, a collection of all the things I knew in life, and her quirky humor and good nature are me. I’m about 13 inches taller than Carlie, and I don’t practice magic, but I have cats, I lived in Upstate New York, and I like the secret life of a restaurant. It feels like home to me, so writing about it comes as second nature.
Carlie embodies a lot of my favorite qualities. She’s brave, and honest, and funny and a little bit weird. I think the people around her—Gran, especially—are a representation of my better angels, and when I read my own books (I listen to them quite often, just to get the feel for my own world again), I’m reminded of how much of my life is in these pages.
And then there’s Wulfric.
Okay. I am not 6’7” (but my kid will be that or more, he’s enormous), not a Viking (married one, though) and not a vampire (though my steaks are medium rare). What makes me laugh out loud about Wulfric every time is that he embodies the quiet suffering I endure with certain kinds of modern technology. Give me a 1967 Mustang, and I’ll tear it apart and rebuild it. Give me an app on my phone that sorts grocery lists, and I’ll accidentally shut down the power grid in my town. I’m like that, and so, Wulfric is like that.
As to Tammy Cincotti? I have a crush on her, and I write her as the kind of superhero that every town deserves, but with better hair and makeup.
I think, as you wander through the little town I’ve built, I hope you see where it came from, and I certainly hope you’ll stay a while.
Now. Syrup, butter, or both? Let’s eat.

Tori treks to the Great White North with an Alyut shaman, who believes she is the one who will bring Restoration to his people. A resistance is growing in the North, but Tori may not be the god the people are looking for, and the price of revolution may cost Tori her heart as well as her life.
Meanwhile, another threat grows in strength. Old World monsters are rising up across the New World, and no one knows how they've returned. As nations ready themselves for a magical war, their return threatens to change everything.
New alliances are set in place, new friendships are forged, new loves kindled. But no one is safe, for there can be no war without betrayal.

Character Profiles

Tori Burodai (the Gallows Girl) - She is the heroine of the books. She was raised on the Yan Avii Steppe with her mother, but spent most of her formative years as a slave in the Oshan Empire. She soon learns she can wield magic, though few sorcerers still exist in her world. She is tough and pragmatic, but must wrestle with her demons in order to properly wield her magic and become the hopeful leader she is meant to be.

Darien Redvar - He is Tori’s best friend as the story begins. He is an idealist as the story begins, but soon learns how difficult it truly is to resist an empire when is forced to serve in the chancellor’s Legions. Can he resist his training, or will he become like the soldiers who slaughtered his family as a boy?

Ren Andovier - He is the leader of the Shadow Watch and a charismatic leader, though some of his training methods are a bit questionable. He has a great ability to inspire and motivate others, though his true intentions and reasons are not always clear.

Kale Andovier - He is the brooding younger brother to Ren. He does not seek the limelight and has many regrets from his past. He fights for those he loves, but he cares more than he often lets on.

Cyrus Maro (the chancellor) - He is the primary villain of the series. He fought his way to power, and is determined to prove his merit over the weakness of his ancestors. He has a complicated and tragic backstory that slowly unravels as the story progresses. He is also very manipulative, and so, some characters may perceive him as being more noble than he may actually be. Some of you may hope to see some good in him as well. Maybe that hope is well-founded. Maybe he is manipulating you too.

As the lackluster youngest daughter of a U.S. Senator, Roxie DePrive spends her life thirsting for one thing: to be loved unconditionally.

So, when her first boyfriend turns into her first marriage, Roxie's life undergoes a drastic change. And when that first marriage doesn't work out, she marries again.

And again.

Until Roxie marries five times.

The first marriage is puppy love, then dangerous love, convenient love, wishful love, and one that might possibly be the real deal.

And yet, none of the men she marries can quench the thirst she feels in her heart. It's only when she meets a man who knows her entire life and all her mistakes that Roxie learns the power of something else-the deep and abiding peace of Living Water.

A modern retelling of the Woman at the Well in the New Testament, Living Water shows us that no matter our past, it's God's love that truly quenches the thirst of our souls.

Lynn's Review
