Some  authors find their niche and never vary or stray outside the box.  Not Rourke. When she puts pen to paper greatness happens.  There isn't a glass ceiling she hasn't shattered in the Indie Book Community. While her signature snark and wit are always a constant; she can write YA, NA, fantasy, paranormal, or rom-com.  Rourke is not boxed in and she proves that yet again with Veiled.

In true Rourke fashion, Stacey has wowed fans yet again with her amazing writing.  I LOVE that no matter what genre she is writing her signature style is always present.  Her bad ass heroines are inspiring whether they are battling gnomes, facing the demon within, trying to make it down the isle, or infiltrating a vampire organization.

​Quoted as saying she would never write a vampire novel, Rourke has down just that.  But unlike sparkly vamps, or blood thirsty hot bar owning vamps, Rourke has brought story to this century and made a bold political statement.  I love how she takes the classic vampire and makes him her own.  This is no Bram Stoker retelling. Rourke left me with a ending that had my jaw on the floor and anxiously awaiting more.

Dracula has always been sexy and suave in all the books and movies, but Rourke's Dracula is HAWT! Vlad has old school charm, a bit if awkwardness, and is simply swoon worthy. He fills out a three-piece suit like a GQ cover model. (Rarrr)

Rourke weaves in Vlad's backstory seamlessly; and its not the overdone version either. Her version while steeped in history has her own twist.

The wit and snark of Vincenza is ever present in Vlad. She is one of my favorite characters.

Vlad is quite the page turner. I read it in one day! Secrets are revealed to Vincenza. Life altering decisions are made. There's romance! (Did I tell you how HAWT Vlad is?) And the ending!!!!! Hold on to your seats cause hell hath no fury like a scorned woman. ALL HAIL THE QUEEN!

Vincenza is the ultimate bad a**! What an ending! Rourke ripped my heart out but made up for it with Vlad sexiness.

They say when mankind fell, a black flash streaked across the sky. People died where they stood. Planes and cars stopped instantly. The world went dark in mere seconds. I wished I could remember what it looked like to see planes in the sky or cars moving along the roads instead of husks of the great machines scattered across the land. Sometimes in the quiet of the night when the darkness covered me like a security blanket, I dreamed of what life was like before it all ended.
Tor, my boyfriend and traveling companion, liked to hold me close against his hard chest and recall what he remembered. He was older than me. As far as I knew, I was twenty-three years old and he was twenty-eight. The day life changed, I had been three and alone. A neighbor, Mariam, took care of me until she died six months ago. Tor wasn’t a psychopath like others I had encountered on the roads, so sticking together was the best decision for both of us.
“What were you thinking just now?” He peered at me with his chestnut brown hair brushing against his matching lashes. Rundown, he desperately needed a trim. His arm tightened around me, making me feel warm and safe.  Most of the time, I didn’t feel safe in this dangerous world. There were days when I thought it wasn’t worth the fight to survive this hell. Maybe I would just slit my own throat or let the Dramens take me and eat me. But every time I had that thought, Tor was there, as if he noticed me falling down and out of his reach.
“I was thinking about the ‘before.'” I dreamed wistfully of the past often and how different it would have been if nothing had changed.
“Of course, you were.” I didn’t have to look at his face to know he smiled lovingly at me, finding enjoyment in my dreams of the past.
“Continue the story, please. I won’t nod off, I promise.” Ever since I had met Tor, near the small community of normal survivors in what used to be called North Carolina, he’d told me tales to keep my mind busy and give me hope. Hope to keep me from the darkness that beckoned me to join the rest of humanity.
“Anything for you.”
I knew in my soul he would always be there for me, in whatever way I needed, except the one way I wished to be joined with him as a couple. He always kept me at a distance instead of touching me like I knew he wanted to act upon.
“I forget where I was in the story. Had Queen Olyndria married King Lachan from the kingdom across the land yet?”
I nodded against his chest, my hands idly drawing swirls across his dirt-covered green shirt, which was soft despite the grit. “She just gave birth to the princess.”
I closed my eyes, forgetting about the “before” as he continued with the story of the magical Fae, fantastical tales of royal queens, kings, daring princesses, handsome princes, dragons, and cores made of nature inside them. They were stories from a fairy tale book, but I loved hearing them just as much as I obsessed hearing about life when things were simpler.
Tor began the story. “Queen Olyndria was a beautiful Fae with brown hair and pale skin that shimmered like a jewel. The royal Fae had gem cores, signaling their power. They lived among the world of men in a hidden realm where they helped protect us from the evil creatures who lived there. Most stayed in a particular part of the realm with their king, an awful man named King Verin. The queen finally wed a king from another land, and they had a baby, Princess Nyx. She had lavender hair and pale skin like her mother and eyes of the deepest royal purple from the amethyst core inside her.”
I sighed. Such a difference from my light brown skin, messy hair with curls of brown, and almond-shaped eyes that Tor said reminded him of a forest in spring—a bright green mixed with yellow and brown flakes around my irises. However, I had come to terms with myself, even if I wasn’t a gorgeous Fae.
Tor never mentioned what the princess’s powers were, but he said she was promised to be the most powerful of them all.  “I bet she met a prince and they had a large wedding full of dancing,” I muttered wistfully. People didn’t have parties or large weddings anymore. If you managed to not be taken by the Dramens and made into a wife, either willing or not, then you spent life in a safe community or on the road, hiding.
“I don’t think they did, actually. The Fae legends say King Verin released a darkness into the realm that took away their powers, making them defenseless to his takeover of their world. The princess would save them all, so her parents encased her in an onyx tomb. The queen used the last of her powers to save her daughter and it drove her mad. Not a very happy ending to this story.” His voice became solemn, and remorse gutted me for requesting he tell me this tale.
“Well, I’m gonna choose to believe the story is real, and eventually the princess will be released from the onyx and will save everyone, maybe even us poor humans.”
Part of me knew he made this story up to keep me distracted from the evil around us. The other part of me believed his story came from some truth. Somewhere out there, the Fae existed.
 I fell asleep, thinking of a purple-haired woman encased in onyx who would one day rise and save the world.

I want more! There are so many things I could nitpick but naw. I enjoyed it so much that it I finished it within a day. The many epilogues was a bit over the top but all at once makes it so you don't have to continue with the series to find out what happened to this couple. However continuing with other couples will be super fun!

Top Ten Perks of being the author AND the narrator.
This is a good list for me to do, but I’m going to tweak it a bit… Top Ten perks of being an author AND a narrator.
  1. Narrators make the best copy editors. I always find typos when narrating, even in big front-list titles from major publishers.
  2. If I find a clunky sentence, I can change it! I always narrate the book before sending it to the formatter. With “Deep Shadow” I ended up with a couple pages of tweaks.
  3. I get to choose characters with the audio in mind. Some accents are my kryptonite. You will find no people from Chicago in my books because I sound like that SNL “Da bearz” sketch.
  4. I get to try out NEW accents. In my first book, Zombie Bigfoot, I wanted an Afrikaner. That accent was tricky but I finally got it locked in and absolutely loved it.
  5. No back and forth during edits… the person who reads is the person who greenlights the project.
  6. I know the emotional intent of particular scenes and can color the performance accordingly.
  7. I know how to pronounce most of what I put in the book ahead of time. While writing the book, I will look up how to say locations as I add them.
  8. I get to submit myself for reviews on two different levels.
  9. It increases my fan base for purchases—those that like my narration… and those that like my writing.
  10. I get to keep ALL the royalties!  Mwahahahahaha! Well… “all” of the portion the distribution companies let me have.

About the Author: S.A. Hartman, PhD

Steve A. Hartman has written and produced two award winning short films, “Home from War,” depicting the impact of war on returning vets, and “Before it’s Too Late,” which stars two
Academy Award Nominees, Robert Loggia and Eric Roberts. This film illuminates the danger of driving beyond one’s ability as skills and reflexes diminish. In North Hollywood, he produced a new original theatrical musical comedy, “Reunion,” to mostly full houses during its six-week run to excellent reviews. He also published a sci-fi novel, “Sorry, it’s a Boy.” Steve has written several other feature scripts, one of which, “Charioteer,” was optioned for a TV series. The production company’s option expired permitting the renewed search for another production opportunity.
His latest project, a non-fiction book, “Life is Short/Death is Forever,” now on Amazon, is best described as an autobiographical self-help book based on his unusual experiences and skills. Contrary to the title, many have commented that it is truly “a fun read.” He was a consultant for many years helping international and domestic companies manage and grow their businesses in a variety of industries including; int’l finance, robotics, aerospace, textiles, computer technology, hospitality, and served as an investment banker for Vanguard, a New York firm. Steve earned a Master’s Degree in Oceanography and Marine Biology at Long Island University, and has a Ph.D. in Biophysics from NYU in New York City. He was an adjunct faculty member of Columbia University- appointed by the president of Columbia University to the International Seminar on Pollution and Water Resources, and served there as an advisor to the World Bank as a representative of the Columbia University Faculty.

About the Narrator: Marc Louis Mintz

Marc Louis Mintz is a baritone voice artist, actor, and audio engineer.
Marc took the long way back to his professional home. Building on his roots in the LA area as a clinical therapist, Marc produced motivational workshops, served in AT&T Management Development and Computer Operations, and started I/Opening Productions to bring desktop computer animation to advertising and movies. Marc also founded one of NM's longest-lived IT training and consulting groups while publishing 13 cybersecurity books. 
Now Marc operates his own Voice Over Artist and Sound Studio in Santa Fe, where his voice can be heard in commercials, eLearning, and audiobooks. Marc can be reached at marc@marclmintz.com
