Excerpt
She opened her mouth and started the flow of words that would have surely insulted him and put him in his place when her eyes took him in. 6' 1", thin yet muscular, with dark brown, shaggy hair, and eyes that seemed to pierce through you. And those full lips. All of her anger flew out of her lungs with a gasp, and she was at a loss for words.
"Can you die of embarrassment?" She asked me.
After a moment of silence, I started screaming, "What?! Ryan Perry?! The Ryan Perry?"
Ryan Perry was not just a celebrity to us. He played a role in a movie that Alice and I were in love with. Then again, thousands of women were in love with his fictional character. The movie was based off a book series that had engrossed us both. And for it to be put on screen, seeing the character come to life, was incredible. So, meeting him was like coming face to face with the object of your fantasies. Of course, we knew he wasn't actually that character, but, well, you know. Even if he wasn't, there was some element he gave the character that enthralled so many people, and made him much more appealing.
I shouted, "Get me an autograph!"
"Oh, yeah, that'll work out well," she said sarcastically. "How do I start that? 'Excuse me, I am sorry for bothering you, and this doesn't change the fact that I hate you for ruining my vacation, but my friend, Vivianne, would like an autograph.'"
I was about to say something when I heard her gasp and a man's voice near her say, "That'll be a start." His British accent was as thick as his voice was deep.
I am sure I could see the shades of embarrassment run over her face. I heard a slight crack of plastic when I realized that she had clenched down on her phone. I couldn't help but burst into laughter.
"Shut up," she hissed through her teeth.
"OH! No, this is too rich!" I laughed.
"Hello, my name is Ryan," the man said, very politely, I might add. "I am truly sorry for all of the confusion. I truly didn't know that I was taking anything that had been promised to someone else. If I had known…"
"Sure, whatever," Alice snapped. "You probably get everything you want wherever you go. What's it to you if you stomp on someone else's plans?"
"I would never do something like that on purpose," he said coolly. "Listen, let me take you to dinner to make up for it."
Another burst of laughter shot out of me as I envisioned the shock that would have rolled across her face at that moment.
"Shut up, Viv," she snapped, and turned her attention to Ryan. "And what makes you think I would want to go to dinner with you?'
"Your friend's autograph," was the reply, with a certain calm and confidence.
"Fine."
I was laughing again as she snapped the phone closed. I quickly sent her a text.
Enjoy! Call me as soon as you can! And DON'T forget my autograph!

about

Colleen Nye started writing at an early age. Between school writing assignments and her love of reading in early elementary school. In high school, she submitted some of her poems and short stories to various mediums including anthologies, newspapers, magazines and contests. Several of which were published and won her awards including a few editor’s choice awards, placements in contests and even The Sarah Endres Award for Young Writers. Colleen also started a poetry club in her high school where she held weekly meetings to share her writings with her fellow classmates and to be able to hear what others were writing. She wanted other young writers to be proud to share their writing.
As an adult, she branched out and worked as a freelance writer for corporations and non-profit organizations, writing press releases for newspapers, magazines and online blogs and web sites. She also worked with politicians to create campaign and promotional fliers, bios and web site blurbs. Other works she has done have been research and photography for a few Mid-Michigan sites highlighted in the book Paranormal Lansing by Nicole Bray and Robert DuShane. She’s also worked with several companies, creating their how-to articles and product descriptions.
In 2009, Colleen joined a writer’s group called Writing at the Ledges in her home town of Grand Ledge, MI. In 2010, they published their second anthology of the group’s poems, short stories, memoirs and essays entitled Seasons of Life. Colleen’s short story, “Full Circle” was a part of this book, being one of the longer pieces and receiving several great reviews. In 2012, the group published their third anthology, in which, Colleen had two short stories.
In 2008, Colleen collaborated with her friend, Carrie Peterson, about a dream Carrie had one night. This dream became part of the opening sequence for her novel, When In Maui. Carrie’s dream and her friendship help Colleen shape When In Maui into Colleen’s first full length novel, published in 2012.
In 2013-14, she wrote a tech thriller, Immersion. Signing it with Anchor Group Publishing and released 2015. A story she's anxious to see reach a wider audience. Anchor Group also picked up When in Maui, an opportunity Colleen is very excited to see develop.
Colleen currently lives in Michigan with her two daughters – a budding chef and an aspiring free spirit that rivals her own inner gypsy. She is teaching writing classes locally. Her next novel? She’s working on a few projects and anxious to share them with you all.

It’s all about the #Selfie.

She was the one girl I never wanted.
Until I had her.
One night.
One mistake.
Something we both wanted to forget.
I got rid of the proof. The one piece of evidence that could remind us both.
At least, I thought I did.
When it shows up on the school Buzzfeed, rumors fly. Friendships are tested and the feels get real.
I don’t do relationships. I don’t open my heart.
Especially for a girl everyone knows I hate.
What happens during spring break, stays in spring break.
Until it follows you home.

I didn’t think. I just reacted.

I leapt over the railing with ease. The distance down and the uneven sand I would be landing on didn’t even cross my mind.

It didn’t matter.

I landed like a cat, no trouble at all, and the second my feet hit the sand, I moved forward. Ivy was almost beneath the deck, but not quite. Her back was to me and she was sitting up, hunched forward over part of herself.

She was muttering some pretty damn colorful curse words beneath her breath, and my face split into a smile. “Another angry crab attack you?”

She stiffened and looked over her shoulder. Long blond hair cascaded down her back and partially over her shoulder, creating a waterfall around her.

God, she was beautiful.

Wait. No. No, she wasn’t.

I cleared my throat.

“Braeden?” She glanced up, surprised. “Did you jump down here?”

“Well, you screamed like you might be dying,” I quipped.

“Hardly.” She tried to roll her eyes, but it turned into a grimace. “I need a Band-Aid,” she said pathetically.

I bit back a smile and crouched down beside her. “Let me see.”

She leaned back a little so her body wasn’t blocking my view. The movement brought her closer against me, and the scent of cinnamon wrapped around me. My stomach muscles tightened and I jerked slightly. There was no way she could have noticed, but her head tilted back and her eyes found mine.

We stared at each other for the span of a few heartbeats, neither of us moving or saying a word until someone called down from above, wanting to know if we were okay.

I blinked, bringing myself back from the edge—the edge I always seemed perched on around her—and motioned for her to show me what was wrong.

She lifted her foot into her lap, and I looked down.

I heard myself mutter something, but I was back to not thinking again.

She had the cap of a beer bottle sticking out of the bottom of her foot. Blood oozed out around it and dripped into the sand.

I cradled her foot in my hand and gently stroked my thumb along her heel. A shudder moved through her, and I glanced up.

“Hurts, huh?” I murmured.

She blinked. “Uh…” She blinked again. “Yeah.”

Using one hand, I reached around to the base of my neck and pulled my T-shirt up over my head. I didn’t say anything when I reached for her again, and without any warning, I yanked the cap free.

Her breath hissed between her teeth and she smacked my arm.

“Hey!” I snapped.

“That hurt!” she yelled, but it came out more like a whimper.

I tossed the cap over my shoulder and glanced back down. Fresh blood welled. “It’s over now,” I said gently and used my shirt to wrap around her foot.

Once the shirt was in place, I pressed her foot between my hands, applying a little pressure.

Really, I just wasn’t ready to let go.

“Braeden?” Her voice caressed me. Being down here mostly concealed by the deck in the cool sand and low lighting brought back last night. It reminded me of the undeniable electricity between us.

I thought for sure it would be gone.

It was still there.

“Seren!” Chase was running towards them. “Seren! Move!” He jumped in between them, arms reaching back to protect her.
Robert turned his palm, revealing another, much larger metal piece. “Silly boy, I wouldn’t hurt her.”
“Well, you can’t be too careful.” Chase scowled at him.
Seren lowered one of Chase’s arms, stepping up next to him. “What is that?”
Robert looked down at the flat piece of metal, etched with groves that appeared to be in no particular design. “This is one of the things you will need.” He put a hand on her shoulder. “I’m assuming you didn’t come to just catch up after all these years.”
“Please come with us. I have so many questions.” She motioned towards the car.
“I shouldn’t. If they see me with you, they’ll know what you’re doing.” He cupped the metal piece in his hand, turning it over and thrusting it at Seren.
“But I don’t know what I’m doing.” She pleaded with him. “Please, I don’t care if we go to your place or a diner or whatever.”
“Seren, it is very dangerous.” He shook his head.
Chase intervened. “For who? Her or yourself?”
Robert flashed him a stabbing look. “Seren is like family to me.”
“Some family. You abandoned her just like her family did,” he cut into him.
“I have been trying to save this world that’s quickly spiraling out of control these days, if you haven’t noticed. But my inactivity in Seren’s life hasn’t been for a lack of caring. It’s because I was trying to keep her out of it and keep her safe.” He took a step back.
Chase looked at Seren. “Yeah, well, her parents dragged her into it. So now we need some answers.”
“Fine.” Robert huffed. “I’ll meet you at the Shelby Street Diner at four. But take this now, just in case.” He grabbed Seren’s hand and placed the new metal piece and a small piece of paper in it. “If I don’t show, follow the instructions on this paper. Promise me.”
“Sure Thing.” She nodded, staring at the folded paper in her palm.
“Now, please leave. You never know who is watching.” He walked back to his corner.
She started to unfold the paper, but Chase put a hand over hers. “Not here. Let’s get out of here. I am starting to get a really bad feeling. I don’t care if he’s crazy or not. He’s right. You never know who’s watching.”
“You’re starting to sound like them.” They walked back towards the car.
“Yeah, well, this is all a bit creepy. I don’t really want to take any chances.” He put a hand on her back and shrugged.
A few feet from the car, Chase spotted a boy, couldn’t have been but a year or two out of his teens, running in the direction of the car that he’d left running when he went after Seren. The boy threw the door open and threw it into gear.
Before the wheels could make more than an inch rotation, the car exploded. The shockwave of the explosion throwing them and several other bystanders to the ground. Shrapnel flying in every direction, a piece of metal lodging into...

Cover Reveal from the Fabulous Sarah Robinson

5/14/2015

Picture
Perfect for fans of Katy Evans and Monica Murphy, Sarah Robinson’s blistering-hot series debut introduces the Kavanagh brothers—mixed martial arts fighters who work hard, play hard, and love with all their hearts.

As one of the big names at his family’s gym, Legends, MMA star Rory Kavanagh is used to being in the spotlight—until a gruesome leg injury knocks him out of the cage. Rory is left feeling sidelined in more ways than one, battling the inner demons that come with losing the one shot at his dreams. Then Clare walks into his life and gives him a new dream: winning her heart. There aren’t many new faces in Woodlawn these days, but this tough, beautiful stranger makes Rory want to get his life back into fighting shape.

Clare Ivers doesn’t think she’ll be able to tell anyone what really brought her to the close-knit Bronx neighborhood where she just started bartending. But her life’s on pause and her past is catching up fast, try as she might to move on—with new friends, steady work, and a chiseled alpha male trying to get her attention. Even though Rory’s more than a little intense, she can’t deny that her heart beats faster when he looks at her with those soulful silver eyes. Clare thought she was done with love, but Rory might just be man enough to show her she thought wrong.

***Includes a special message from the editor, as well as an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

 Synopsis

The prodigal son. A second chance. The long kept secret.

Home?

I had returned. I hadn't been here for seven years. I was angry that last summer, and once I got away, I didn't want to come back. The irony was the career I sought to escape this small town was the very reason I was here. My first movie was a featured film at the Traverse City Film Festival. As an independent film director, my premiere brought me back home. Home. A place I didn't recognize.

Or maybe home didn't recognize me?

I had it all in California: a girlfriend who was the daughter of a movie financier, a job that led to connections in the film industry, and a condo overlooking the ocean in Malibu. What I didn't have was family. I had left them all behind. I was the prodigal son.
The last person I expected to see was her. Britton McKay. She had been my summer love as a teenager. Not just once, but over several summers; until the last one. That was seven years ago. Now, she looked more beautiful than I remembered. Seeing her again flooded me with memories long suppressed. She reminded me of everything I once had and left behind.

Now, she had returned too.

Can lost romance be rekindled?
Can unanswered questions be revealed?
Can I make this place my home again?

Touch Screen Character Interview

Britton McKay sits next to me. She’s writing an article for the bookstore where she works about the upcoming film festival. The Traverse City Film Festival in Michigan is a big deal to independent film directors, like myself, and Britton’s been collecting reviews on books that cover the film industry in the state.

She’s decided to interview me as a local celebrity who was previously featured at the festival. I was here last summer. That’s where we were reunited.

Britton: So tell me how you got into film?

Me: (laughing). You already know this answer.

Britton gives me a look, and then says my name in a way I can’t resist.

Me: Fine. My grandparents gave me their old camcorder when I was a kid and I liked to play around with it. See what stories I could tell through the camera lens.

Britton: What was it like growing up in the area?

Me: (Groaning). You know I wasn't happy here. I always felt trapped. Don’t get me wrong. I had a good childhood and crazy teen years, but I didn't want to inherit my father’s cherry farm. I wanted to do something...different...with my life.

Britton looks at me with sympathy. She knows my father and I did not see eye-to-eye on my going to California, or my pursuing film direction as a future. He didn't understand that his inheritance wasn't my dream.

Britton: So...your film was called Under the Moonlight. Was there anything particular from your life that inspired you or you used within the film?

I've been watching her as she types. She’s concentrating as she works, and I know that she knows the answer to this question, too. She pauses to push a piece of her long blonde hair behind an ear, and I can’t help myself. I need to touch her. I repeat the motion even though the hair is in place. She looks up and turns to smile at me. She’s waiting for my answer.

Me: The inspiration came from a book I read about a boy who wanted something and his father said he could get it, if he worked on the family’s farm to earn the money. You know there is a love interest in the story and it was reflective of my experience as a teenager with some girl I met. Whenever we had to separate, she told me if I was under the moonlight, she might be looking at it too. In that moment, we would be together although we were apart.

Britton stops typing and turns to look at me again.

Britton: Sounds like a smart girl.

Me: (distracted by her hair slipping through my fingers) Hmmm...she was. She still is, actually.

Britton: She’s not a girl any longer. (She smiles slowly).

Me: No, she’s not. Now she’s a beautiful woman.

Britton: Good answer.

Me: Was there a question in there?

Britton laughs. She is still looking at me when she asks: Whatever happened to this girl?

Me: I was an idiot, and I let her go. Lucky me, I found her again.

I kiss her shoulder and she shivers. I kiss the juncture between her shoulder and her neck. She’s tilted her head, so I have better access and she groans my name in that way that drives me crazy.

Me: I have a question (mumbling into her ear).

Britton: I bet you do. Only a few more.

She’s pushing me off. I sit back and run my hands through my wavy hair. Sighing deeply, I let her ask me another.

Britton: You said you couldn't wait to get away from here, yet you returned. Tell me a little more about this.

Me: (serious for a moment) I was honored to be invited to the festival. It was what I had been working toward my whole life. I wanted to make my own film on my own terms. I did it, and it seemed ironic that the place to prove it happened was right here where I was trying to get away from. (slowly smiling) Of course, little did I know what awaited me.

Britton: (smiles too, but she looks weary) I was waiting a long time.

Her voice is low and it’s still a sensitive issue for us. We had a long way to go after I first returned home. Not only was I overwhelmed by seeing her again, but meeting her son, the illness of my mother, and the wedding of Jess and Emily was a lot to tackle all at once. I hadn't been home in seven years and I had missed so much. More than I even realized. She worries that I won’t forgive her. I worry that she won’t ever forgive me. Somehow we must be letting the past go, because we sit here, in her uncle’s old house. Now, it’s our home.

Me: (slipping my hand around her neck) You know I’m sorry.

Britton: I do.

I sigh. Those are the words I long to hear from her some day. Some day very soon.

Me: Enough questions, yet?

Britton: Yes.

She claps the laptop closed and I pull it from her lap. Then I wrap an arm around her waist and drag her to straddle me.

Britton: Gavin, Gee and Ben will be back soon.

I’m nuzzling her neck at this point and she moans softly. We have an hour. We’re hardly alone and it means we have to be creative with each other sometimes. Gee is only seven, but Ben is almost sixteen. He’s onto us sometimes.

Me: I. Won’t. Need. Long. (between kisses)

Britton whispers my name in that certain way. It’s either to stop a fight or encourage my intention. In less than a second, I have her up in the air. Her legs wrap around my waist and I’m walking us to our room. She’s kissing me eagerly, always worried that if we don’t hurry, we won’t finish. We've had a few moments like that as well. It’s a frustration I've never known before. A frustration I don’t mind, truthfully, when I know it’s Gee interrupting us. We have time ahead of us, and we always make up for it later.

We hit the bed and clothes are frantically be tugged off each other. It’s a race to see who can get naked first sometimes.

Britton: Wait, I have one more question.

Me: (groaning). It can wait.

Britton: What made you decide to return to Michigan?

She knows the answer to this question. I think she just likes to hear my answer.

Me: Because I knew I couldn't live without you any longer. I had wasted too much time. There was something always missing from me, and little did I know it had returned here to wait for me.

Britton stares at me. Her blue eyes pierce me to the core just like they did when we were younger. I loved her at sixteen. I love her more at twenty-seven. We’re silent for a moment as our bodies come together. We were always good at this. I craved her touch from the first time I saw her.

Author Bio
I live in Southern New Jersey with my amazing wife, who is also my best friend. We live just outside of Philadelphia and about an hour from an awesome selection of beaches. It was on a beach that I wrote my first short story and I love to spend as much time as possible there. There is something so invigorating about the sun and the blue skies.
When not working on writing books or my blog I am a husband to an amazing woman, and a father to two fantastic young adults. I am also a corporate finance professional that spends the rest of my time helping executives and business leaders improve and grow their business. It is some of this experience, which has helped bring this story and the sequel to life.

Blog Excerpt
Max was standing a couple of feet away from Robert, on his left side, and the driver was a couple of feet away, on the right side. The game was well underway and Sam’s team was winning when he saw Joseph approaching. Suddenly Robert tensed, as he saw Max straighten up, his whole body and mind seemed to be on high alert. With a quick motion of his hand the driver closed in beside Robert and just behind him. The man's hand reaching for Robert’s arm as he said, “With me, sir” and guided him towards the SUV.
One moment the parents were cheering on their sons’ and daughters’ soccer teams, and the next there was chaos everywhere. Joseph had broken into a full speed run cutting across the soccer field towards Sam, dodging several of the small children as he raced forward. The driver protecting Robert stopped and knocked him to the ground, as Max went into a crouch, his gun in his hand and sweeping across the field. As Robert landed hard on his left shoulder he saw that Joseph also had his gun out.
The first shot rang out and Robert saw the cop standing beside his car go down, as he was just starting to free his gun from its holster. The bullet tore through the cop’s left leg and buried itself in the door behind him. With the driver covering him, all Robert could do was watch, in what seemed like incredibly slow motion, as another shot rang out. Robert saw a shooter go down on the far side of the field, the rifle falling to the ground from his lifeless hands. More shots could be heard as the children scattered from the field, parents and children, trying to find each other.
Robert watched as Joseph reached Sam and in one fluid motion pulled him under his arm and took off for the SUV. The driver, kneeling in front of Robert, was firing behind Joseph and Robert saw another man go down. There were four more men charging the field with guns firing at the driver and Max. Robert had not even noticed that Max had moved onto the field and was running an intercept with Joseph, firing as he ran. Another man went down, and then Robert felt the driver topple over.
The man’s gun lay on the ground beside him. Robert saw him clutching his shoulder with blood pouring from the wound. Robert grabbed the gun and, despite yells from Joseph, he stood up and ran towards them. Robert remembered what Joseph had taught him about handling the gun and held it, pointing down. The gun tight in both hands as he ran on. Max had passed Joseph and Sam, stopped and dropped to one knee. He was firing at the three men still advancing on them, and Robert saw in horror, that Max's left arm was hanging to his side useless.
Robert couldn’t tell where the other shots were coming from - he guessed from one of Max’s team that was hiding some place. Whoever it was, he was an amazing shot. He fired one at a time, and each time found his mark. Robert passed Joseph carrying Sam, and Joseph shot him a look. He knelt and fired at the approaching men, leading him as Joseph had taught him. He saw the shooter he aimed at slow down as he grabbed his side and then topple as another bullet hit him. The third man was taken off his feet and toppled backward as Max hit him with several shots to the chest. The last man continued to run towards Robert and Max firing as he ran, trying to avoid the bullets flying at him. Just as it seemed like he was going to finally find one of them, the shooter’s arms flung wide. He staggered forward for several more steps, his eyes already lifeless as he fell forward into the grass.
Max turned to Robert, as shouts of “clear” could be heard. Robert leaped up to his feet, desperately needing to check on Sam. As his eyes ran over the scene before him, he noticed the driver was sitting up with another gun in his good hand. He also saw two men jogging towards them and he stiffened before realizing they were part of Max’s team. Robert turned looking around wildly searching and then saw Sam sitting on the ground crying. Beside him lay Joseph and he didn’t appear to be moving. Robert looked at Max and the two took off running.

Review

Cheree's 5 Star Review*****

A beautiful dystopian love story full of hope for the future and inspiring us to find the strength in us all. Not your typical dystopian series, but a love story at it’s core, but also about finding strength in ourselves to fight for what’s right. Although being book 3, this one is less of a love story and more of a story about fighting against a tyrannical controlling government and fighting through loss. Krissa has had more than her fair share of heartbreak, and it has left her broken but determined. Determined to fight for the rights and freedom of all the people who don’t even know the truth of their world. Throughout the book we get to see little pieces of the puzzle that was Braden and what drew him to make the choices that he made. Devastating and beautiful throughout, and leaves you with a feeling of hope and empowerment, that if you believe in yourself and your cause, you can accomplish anything.
