A story as old as time ...

Or is it?

Ward Kelly had been dating Tiffany for three years. On the day he went to buy an engagement ring, something was telling him no. Good thing because he drove straight to his best friend Alec's place and caught Tiffany in his bed.

Turned out it was a blessing in disguise.

Kiera Bing was a first-year law student. The workload was daunting, and the long study hours were even worse, so one night a week, Kiera allowed herself a break by hanging with her best friend and roommate at their favorite bar. The last thing on her mind was finding love. But when Kiera meets Ward, he changes her mind about everything.

Ward and Kiera spend almost every waking moment together. Ward knew he would walk through fire for Kiera, and he just might have to. Tiffany tried to burn Ward's world to the ground once, and it looks like she’s trying to shatter it again. But sometimes, the most obvious answer will lead you in the wrong direction because if you put your trust in the wrong people, you could get burned.

And the reburn could destroy it all.

He cocked his head to the side, studying me. As he waved his hand in an arc, a blast of heat hit me. I cried out and fell to my knees—our eyes still locked on one another.

Was the king using his dark magic on me? My arms and legs shook. I couldn’t stand or tear my eyes away from Morlet’s. The word Kriger was spoken in my head, gently, like a whisper of smoke curling around a branch.

Kriger. This time louder, more forceful, almost accusing. My palms tingled. Something swelled in them below the surface. What was happening? A hand clamped down on my arm, and I was finally able to break eye contact with the king.

“Look at me and focus,” a gruff voice whispered. I glanced at the man holding me. “We don’t have much time.” He released my arm. “Can you touch this?” He pulled out a silver necklace from under his shirt. A large, round medallion dangled from it. I hesitated since I had no idea who this man was or why he was helping me. “Unless you want to be arrested, do as I say.”

“Move!” Morlet roared. He descended the platform and started to make his way toward me.

I reached out and touched the warm medallion. The man cursed.

“Where did she go?” the king shouted frantically, unable to see me through the dense crowd.

“Morlet is coming for you.” The man slipped off his large, fur-trimmed jacket and handed it to me. “Put this on.”

Title: Empty Threat
Author: Danny Bell
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR

Blurb:

Book one of The Black Pages

Elana Black has the power to make herself fictional. But when she decides to start saving all the people in books and TV shows who die just for the sake of advancing the plot, she quickly learns that she's not the only one with her powers.

All Elana wants to do is save people. But these others don't want the stories to change, and they'll do everything they can to stop her.

If you had the power to change fate... to create a happy ending where there wasn't one before... would you do it if it meant risking your own?

My name is Danny Bell. I want to tell stories and avoid writing author profiles. I read--when I should be interacting with people, I named my cat after a cat I liked in a book, I'm pretty sure I saw a ghost one time--though I'll never admit it publicly, I'm too tall for the earth, and I've never eaten a vegetable. I lied about the vegetable part. Wait... is someone going to read this?

“The stairs, come on!” Olivia hissed back, grabbing my arm. We ran as silently as possible. When we got to the stairs, she peaked her head inside, gave a glance up and down, then motioned for me to follow. We made our way up a full floor before we heard movement above us. With no other choice, we ducked into the sixth floor, opening and closing the door as quietly as we could. No one was waiting for us, fortunately. Without waiting an extra second, Olivia dragged me into a small examination room.

“All right. Okay. New floor. That’s something. We just need to figure out what we do now.” Olivia said pensively; I wasn’t sure if she was talking to herself or me.

“Can we stop for a moment?” I demanded. “Where is all of this coming from?”

“Well, I don’t want to die, and one of us had to do something!” she snapped back with a mirthless laugh.

“I was going to figure something out!” I began to protest. I stopped, seeing how Olivia’s expression changed.

“Are you serious? Have you seen yourself?” she asked. “You’re sweating. You’re literally shaking. I had to physically drag you away from danger. Look!”

She spun me around towards the direction of a mirror. I couldn’t believe it; I was a portrait of panic. My left hand was actually shaking and wouldn’t stop. “I’m trying to keep us alive! I am not at all equipped to survive this, but we both can’t be petrified. I’m scared too, but whatever. Unless you’re either going to get it together, or get a new superpower, you just have to trust me.”

I took a few breaths. I couldn’t let us die here, so yeah, it was time to make with my best superheroine impression.

“Right. You’re right. I’m better,” I said with a couple of quick hops to release some of the tension. “You’re right. We got this.”

“That’s fantastic because I have no idea what to do next,” Olivia replied with a sigh.

“You know, my superiors seem to think you deserve a warning,” Bres interrupted over the PA system. “I don’t. I don’t think there’s a damn thing any of us can say to get you to stop really, so why bother? You insist on leaving a bloody mess everywhere you go. Hell, you’ve already figured out the Cruz girl, so you’re not likely to stop, are you?”

“What he’s talking about?” Olivia asked.

“No clue,” I answered. “He’s probably just trying to get under our skin, right?”

“Right.”

“I have a plan, but it’s desperate and stupid.” And largely based on television because I’ve never really been in this situation before.

“I’ll take it,” Olivia replied.

“This is pure speculation, but I think the higher up we go, the more spread out they are. There are multiple ways up to the higher floors, and they’re probably sending people up, but they’re going to be gathered on the ground since that’s the only feasible way out. We’re not getting out the front, but if we can get to the roof we might just be able to, I don’t know, flag someone down or something. Or just lock everyone inside and wait until they leave or maybe they’ll just, I don’t know, burn down the hospital themselves.”

“The stairs are still blocked, how do we make it there in the first place?” Olivia asked.

“This is the dumb part,” I continued. “We send the elevator down to the first floor. There’s like, a thirteen percent chance that they bite. Before you ask how I came up with that number, don’t. This probably isn’t going to work, and I’m going to get us killed.”

“I’m not scared at all,” Olivia said, about as sarcastically as I’ve ever heard her.

I shrugged. “Let’s do it.”

As we left the room, Bres spoke again, and it took everything within me not to yell at him to shut the hell up.

“You know, when people talk about forces bigger than them, they often speak of things outside of their control like shadowy government agents or earthquakes, or God, or any number of other stupid things they could have just planned for.”

I hit the button on the elevator. I could hear the movement in the staircase. It might have been working.

“And while you indeed have been messing with forces much bigger than yourself, something I’d love to make you pay for; I want you to be assured that those are not the forces you need to be worried about.”

We stood still, quietly, until the footsteps faded away. I threw open the door and we dashed up the last flight of stairs to the small ladder leading to the roof. The hatch was even unlocked, our luck was actually picking up.

“The only force you should worry about, the one who decides if you live or not, is me. And Elana, I am so much bigger than you.”

As I pushed the hatch open, a gale force wind sent me hard to the ground, taking Olivia with me and, ironically, knocking the wind out of both of us. I found it oddly funny for half a moment, but as I looked up, the wild-haired silhouette framed by the sunlight pouring in through the hatch removed any humor.

“The smaller they are, the harder they fall, eh?” Bres gloated into a wireless microphone, his voice still echoing from the PA. He floated down to the ground somehow, as if he had always been standing in mid-air, but there was no time to be shocked by this. “Good enough, all. Go home; I’ll handle the rest.”

Olivia was still down, but I tried to get to my feet, my legs shaky; maybe from the shock, maybe from the fall, I don’t know. The instant I was upright, Bres sharply pointed a finger in my direction. Immediately, something I couldn’t see slammed into my stomach, harder than I could ever remember being hit. I didn’t even make a noise as I doubled over; one just wouldn’t come out of me.

“You’ve got to learn, Ms. Black, that your actions have consequences. The world will always demand balance. That’s the job it’s given me.”

As he said that, a sickly red glow began crawling up his fingers, growing brighter, extending further from his skin with each subtle flick of his hand. A sick grin spread over his face as he gestured at Olivia, releasing a fireball towards her.

Even before the flame left his hand, I was on my feet again. I’ll never know where I found the energy to move as fast as I did, or remember what I screamed as I moved, but I somehow threw myself between the fire and Olivia, squeezing my eyes shut in the process. Through my closed eyelids, I saw a bright flash of blue and red competing with each other, followed by brilliant black and then… nothing? No burning, for a moment not even any sound.

I opened my eyes and blinked rapidly as they adjusted to the light again. In front of me stood a bright shimmering half sphere crackling with sparks, like a curved wall of electricity. Around us, the stairwell had been scorched. Bres for his part looked amused. I remembered to breathe, and then the half sphere evaporated.

“Nice,” Bres said flatly. Then, with a casual wave of his hand, he excitedly said, “Let’s see you do it again!”

Author: Sean Gibson
Narrator: Haley Catherine
Length: 10 hours 8 minutes
Publisher: The Parliament House⎮2021
Genre: Fantasy
Release date: Feb. 8, 2021
Sure, you think you know the story of the fearsome red dragon, Dragonia. How it terrorized the village of Skendrick until a brave band of heroes answered the noble villagers' call for aid. How nothing could stop those courageous souls from facing down the dragon. How they emerged victorious and laden with treasure. But, even in a world filled with epic adventures and tales of derring-do, where dragons, goblins, and unlicensed prestidigitators run amok, legendary heroes don't always know what they're doing. Sometimes they're clueless. Sometimes beleaguered townsfolk are more hapless than helpless. And orcs? They're not always assholes, and sometimes they don't actually want to eat your children.

Heloise the Bard, Erithea's most renowned storyteller (at least, to hear her tell it), is here to set the record straight. See, it turns out adventuring isn't easy, and true heroism is as rare as an articulate villager. Having spent decades propagating this particular myth (which, incidentally, she wrote), she finally able to tell the real story - for which she just so happened to have a front-row seat. Welcome to Erithea. I hope you brought a change of undergarments - things are going to get messy.

About the Author Sean Gibson

Picture
Sean Gibson, "author" and slackonteur, is not a professional mini biography writer (if he were, this would be much more compelling). Instead, he’s a communications professional by day, hangs out with his amazing wife, son, and daughter by night, and writes somewhere in between. He holds a BA in English Literature from Ohio Wesleyan University and an MBA from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, though rumors persist that he also attended mime school (he is silent on the subject). Sean is a fan of sports teams from Detroit, a distressingly large number of bands that rose to prominence in the 1980s, and writing in the third person. He currently resides in Northern Virginia, and, given how much he hates moving, and given that his house has an awesome library, is likely to remain there for some time.
Sean is the author of several stories starring Heloise the Bard, including The Part About the Dragon Was (Mostly) True, "You Just Can't Hide from Chriskahzaa," and The Chronicle of Heloise & Grimple. He also wrote the Victorian-set fantasy thriller The Camelot Shadow and its prequel short, "The Strange Task Before Me." He has written extensively for Kirkus Reviews, and his book reviews have also appeared in Esquire.

  1. Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing? I was barely coherent during most of the drafting stage and couldn’t figure out what to have for lunch, so wasn’t really thinking ahead to the possibility of turning this into an audiobook. That said, as I got close to the finish line--and made the critical decision to go with a peanut butter sandwich--I started to think about how it would sound, thinking about how much fun it would be if we could find someone who had the vocal range to do so many different characters.
  2. What's your favorite:
    1. Food: Pizza (though now I’m trying to eat vegan, so it’s more like pizza crust topped with tomato sauce, fresh basil, and the salty tears of so many delicious memories)
    2.  Song
    3.  Book: Dracula by Bram Stoker
    4. Television show
    5. Movie: Ghostbusters
    6.  Band: Van Halen (with Sammy Hagar, of course)
    7.  Sports team
    8.  City:
  3. What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors? The best advice I’ve ever heard is from legendary fantasy author R.A. Salvatore, who advises that if you can quit, do it. Walk away. In fact, run away. Just stop. Writing is a hard, lonely, and often fruitless undertaking. Why do something like that if you don’t have to? But if you can’t stop--if you absolutely feel compelled to keep telling stories no matter how hard it is or how much you’d be having if you were, instead, hot-tubbing with the cool kids (whoa...high school flashbacks), then you’re a writer, and you’ve got to pour everything you’ve got into it and never stop trying to get better.
  4. Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks? It’s obviously important to find someone who has the right voice, but it’s also critical to find someone who you feel like gets what you’re trying to do and is open to input and collaboration. I feel very, very lucky to have found exactly that.
  5. What’s next for you? Probably another peanut butter sandwich. And hopefully more stories. Come hang out with me at www.seangibsonauthor.com

The Purge is here. New Orleans must die.
Long after the destruction of all electronic technology, the Bright Crusade rules the world as a fundamentalist Christian theocracy. Gabriel Troy is Lord of Order for the New Orleans Principality. For years, he and his deputies have fought to keep their city safe from the attacks of the Crusade’s relentless enemies, the Troublers, heretical guerillas who reject the Crusade’s rule and the church’s strict doctrines. As their crowning achievement, Troy’s forces capture the Troublers’ local leader. The city has never been more secure.
Alarming intelligence leaks from Washington: Supreme Crusader Matthew Rook plans to enact a Purge - the mass annihilation of everyone deemed a threat to the Crusade. Rook orders his forces to round up all but the blindly loyal and march them to New Orleans. Once the prisoners have been chained inside, the Crusaders will wall off the city and destroy the levees. The resulting deluge, reenacting the Biblical deluge of Noah’s time and the city’s devastation during Hurricane Katrina, will kill everyone inside.
Forced to choose between the Crusade and the city he has sworn to protect, Troy and five other conflicted conspirators gird for battle, fully aware that the looming apocalypse will demand horrific choices, test their faith, and require them to join forces with their sworn enemies.

Brett Bailey Interview

  1. Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
I don’t think in terms of, “I think this would sound good in an audiobook.” I do try to construct sentences with some sense of rhythm and musicality, though. I think paying careful attention to sentence-level writing probably helps make a book more conducive to audio format. Plus, most writers participate in public readings of their works, which means it’s always good when you don’t stumble over your own sentences. I’m sure that helps an audiobook’s narrator.
  1. How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
I worked with Imbrifex Books to produce a pronunciation guide. In New Orleans, you don’t deal with only “generic” Southern accents (which Hollywood often gets badly wrong anyway; most of us actually don’t sound like Foghorn Leghorn). Some New Orleanians sound more or less typically Southern. Others sound almost as if they’re from New York. You’ve got uptown accents, Yat accents, thick Cajun accents. In this book, we didn’t want the accents to be too thick; otherwise, general readers might have a hard time understanding them. But we did want to preserve some of that south Louisiana music and the city’s specific pronunciations of certain words.
  1. Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
I lived in Baton Rouge during Hurricane Katrina. We watched in horror as the Gulf Coast suffered and the government fumbled its response. Poor people and people of color were disproportionately affected. That wasn’t even the first time that a Southern flood led to those kinds of results, so the idea of an authoritarian regime using a flood to further its own ends isn’t as far-fetched as it might seem. I’ve also been dismayed to see how Evangelical Christians flocked to support politicians whose actions and words seemed at odds with Christian ethos. Those are at least two influences on the dramatic situations in the book. I didn’t consciously base the characters or specific plot points on real-life people or events.
  1. How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
So far, I’ve never had to worry about maintaining enthusiasm, thank goodness. I love what I do. I think it’s what I was meant for. In fact, if I don’t get to write on a given day, I feel low and grumpy. I’m probably not easy to live with, so I’m grateful that my family puts up with me.
I do get tired, though. I’m a college professor and a family man, so fitting everything into my daily schedule is always challenging. On some days, I just don’t have time for everything, or maybe all I want to do is lie on the couch and watch movies or Netflix. I try to minimize days when I get nothing done, but when it happens, or when I have a less productive day, I try to let myself off the hook. I also give myself a day or two off here and there, longer if I really need it. That lets me come back to my desk feeling refreshed and excited.
  1. If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
I’d love to time travel, just to see the past and the future. At the very least, it would make for excellent research. Beyond the usual answers we’ve probably all thought about—could I stop Hitler? could I do something to help enslaved people or child laborers? and big questions like that—I’d love to visit the Old West (especially the hot spots like Deadwood, Dodge City, Tombstone, etc.) and any time/place where great writers were doing their best work. Can you imagine getting to tell Herman Melville not to worry because Moby-Dick would turn out fine? Or popping in during the Harlem Renaissance?
I’d also like to go back to see my twelve-year-old self and tell that kid that he doesn’t have to follow the paths of anger and pain, because one day, things will be okay.
  1. What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
I’d suggest they open their minds to new and different experiences. Audiobooks open more opportunities to engage with texts at times and places where traditional reading isn’t even possible—while you’re driving long distances, for instance. And it’s not like reading an audiobook means you have to stop reading physical books or eBooks.
  1. What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump?
If I find myself in a writing slump, I usually put that piece away for a while—a day, a week, however long it takes—and work on something else. When I come back to that first piece, the work usually goes better. If I’m having trouble getting into the mindset to write anything, that’s a good sign I need at least a day or two off. Since I’m not a journalist who has to file by the end of a given day, I usually have that luxury. And the good thing about feeling guilty when I don’t write is that taking those days off jumpstarts the process where I feel more and more that I should be working.
As for a reading slump, my college years forced me to read a bunch of texts at once, and thus far, I’ve never been able to break that habit. I still generally read several books at the same time, so if I’m just not feeling it with a given book on a given day, I just come back to it later and read something else in the meantime.
  1. Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
Not that I remember, but I’d love for that to happen. I’d be interested in hearing what they have to say. Well, maybe not the ones I killed off. Or the zombies. Zombies are seldom good for insight and conversation.
  1. What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Get used to rejection. Unless you’re Stephen King or Joyce Carol Oates or someone like that, you’ll hear “no” a lot, probably even most of the time. You can’t let that stop you. When I get a rejection, I file it and move on. If the editors/readers have advice, I consider it with an open mind. Unless you’re both really talented and very lucky, you’re going to deal with a lot of rejection. You have to believe in yourself and the work. Revise carefully with clear eyes. Keep going.
I’d also tell them to respect every step of the writing process. I see a lot of young writers who believe in the sacred first draft, but most first drafts are pretty bad. Sure, make the first draft as good as you can, but realize that the very nature of rough drafts is that they are rough. Revision and editing are crucial. Don’t mistake proofreading for true revision.
Read widely. Pay attention to technique, structure, how different writers use language and the elements of storytelling, how characters are established and developed. Note the balance of storytelling elements in a given scene and the proportion of scenes to summaries. Note how good writers use setting, figurative language, and so forth. Read a lot, and read actively. You’ll learn a lot about what you want to do in your own work and what you want to avoid.
  1. What’s next for you?
I have two YA novels coming out next year, the first two in a four-book series: Freaks and its first sequel, Travelers. As for what I’m currently writing, I’m working on a second Lord of Order book and the third in the Freaks series. I hope you’ll join us on these journeys. Maybe we can listen to some good audiobooks while we ride.

About the Author: Andrew Cunningham
I'm the author of novels in several genres, including, mystery, thriller, and post-apocalyptic science fiction. Under the name A.R. Cunningham, I've also written the Arthur MacArthur series of mysteries for children.
I was born in England, but have spent most of my life living in the U.S.—including 25 years on Cape Cod before moving to Florida. A former interpreter for the deaf and long-time independent bookseller, I've been a full-time freelance writer and copy editor for many years. A 4th-degree Master Black belt in Tang Soo Do, I finally retired from active training when my body said, "Enough already! Why are you doing this to yourself?" I'm married, with two grown children and two awesome grandsons. My wife and I spend as much time traveling as we can, and are especially fond of cruising the Caribbean.
I have been gratified by the response to my books. When I published Eden Rising back in the spring of 2013, I had no idea what to expect. When I sold my first few copies, I was excited beyond belief that someone was willing to take a chance on it. Numerous books and thousands of copies later, I am still humbled by the emails I get from readers telling me that my books kept them up late into the night.
In October of 2014, Wisdom Spring made me an official Amazon Bestselling author, a thrill I never thought would happen. But it still comes down to being able to bring a few hours of escape to a reader. That's what it's all about for me.
I hope you will try my books. Please feel free to email me with your comments.

Narrating audiobooks is highly gratifying.  I immerse myself into an author’s story in order to bring it to life for the listener.  I’ve enjoyed working with Andrew Cunningham for several years. His books are filled with rich characters, and the stories keep me turning the pages.
I also work as a background actor in movies and TV shows.
For more than 20 years, I worked as a radio news reporter and news writer.  I spent half of my broadcasting career at ABC News Radio in the Washington, D.C., bureau.  I covered all the federal agencies as well as Congress and the White House. I reported on a wide range of stories during my career, including financial and entertainment industry news.
For nearly 24 years, I worked as a federal government spokesman at three separate agencies—National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U.S. Mint and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

About the Author: Nick Vossen
Nick Vossen was raised on blockbuster films from the 80s and 90s as well as fantasy and sci-fi novels, comics and games. No matter the medium, his love for storytelling grew ever larger. Having always had a fascination with the fantastical and weird, he quickly grew fond of authors such as Terry Pratchett, H.P. Lovecraft, Neil Gaiman and many more. During the winter of 2017 Nick released an anthology of short, weird fiction entitled The Fissures Between Worlds, which delves into the strange places on Earth where time does not flow as it should. It was received quite favourably, and so Nick’s desire to tell more stories grew. He has since been privileged to appear in several other anthologies, magazines and short story compilations and has quite a few projects still in the works. His biggest fascinations and inspirations are old forgotten woodlands, the deepest depths of the oceans and the unsettling, uncanniness of retro futurism.
Nick graduated in Media- and Culture studies at Utrecht University in The Netherlands. He is currently working as a freelance creative writer and author. He also frequently works on projects in the Dutch indie-film industry, putting his talents to use in art-direction, set-dressing and of course screenwriting. His first novel, The Swansong Conspiracy (book 1 of the Eldritch Twins series) was released at the end of 2020 by Parliament House Press and well received. The book series offers a unique blend of coming-of-age comedy, supernatural horror and mystery.
