A guy should never, and I do mean never, hook up with his friend’s sister.

It doesn’t matter how hot she is or how many times he’s imagined her in a not-so-innocent way. Nope. Those visuals should always remain hidden deep down in a dark place.

But of course, I just had to drink until I couldn’t see straight and screw everything up. Now, I know what you’re thinking, and I swear it wasn’t my fault. It was that damn tequila.

I never expected to wake up naked only a few feet away from the woman I never should have touched. But man, reality had been so much better than any fantasy I’d ever had.

But it all went downhill fast when she opened the door to leave and came face to face with none other than her brother, who is also one of my best friends.

I’m a dead man, but Jade might actually be worth it.

And to think, all it took to change everything was…
Just One Night.

Love or Lust (LOL Series Part 1)Love or Lust by Rachael Brownell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The concept of this series is so original (at least in books). I absolutely love it. I stay far away from reality TV for the most part. My nose is always in a book, so there isn't time for TV ;)

But this book, whew! It is book 1 of 3, and they WILL need to be read in order. Does it leave you hanging? Darn skippy it does! We only get the first few weeks, I can't wait for the next one to release.

Lennon shoots Callen, but then Lennon is immediately shot by Jace. Lennon apologizes as he jogs off, leaving me to face off with Jace. I’d been paying attention to where he was all game, trying not to be the one to take him out, but now I have no choice. I want to win and, knowing he is all that stands between me and victory, I have to put my game face on.

Ducking further into the brush, I stumble over something and land hard on my a** with a grunt. When I look to my right, I find Jace sitting on the ground, watching me.

“I’ve been watching you for ten minutes. You really should watch your back, you know.” He smirks.

“Seriously. The whole time I was looking for you, and you were sitting here, waiting to shoot me?”

“Nah. I wasn’t going to shoot you. I was waiting for you to find me so you could shoot me. Took you long enough.”

Pushing myself off the ground, I point my gun directly between his legs and he winces. “You’re not playing fair.” My protest earns me another devious grin.

“I never said I would,” he replies, his eyes lighting up as he learns closer to me. “I also can’t seem to pull the trigger. I would hate to leave a mark on that perfect body of yours. You’re going to have to shoot me if you want this to end. But, if I get the choice, I’d prefer you not shoot me where you’re pointing. I’m partial to that part of my body.“

With a grunt, I lift my gun and point it directly at the center of his chest, pulling the trigger. He doesn’t even flinch. Instead, he reaches up, grabs my hand, and pulls me down on top of him. His lips meet mine with more force than I expect, and then I’m rolled on my back.

He deepens the kiss, his tongue running across my bottom lip, begging for entrance. I grant him what he wants and wrap my arms around his neck.

Time stands still as I get lost in his kiss. In everything Jace has to offer. No one is around. No one knows the game is over. It’s just the two of us, and I’m enjoying every second of it.

When he finally pulls away, his lips are swollen and there’s a huge smile on his face.

“I’ve been wanting to do that since I first saw you. It was worth the wait.”

I feel the heat creep into my cheeks as he pushes off me and starts laughing.

“Um, I don’t know how to tell you this, but I think we’re busted.”

Looking left and right, I don’t see anyone around. That’s when the pink on the front of my chest armor catches my eye. It must have rubbed off from where I shot him. F**k! I’m not sure how I’m going to explain this away.

Reaching down and extending his hand to me, still laughing, Jace helps me to my feet and hands me my gun.

“Come on, princess. Let’s get back to everyone else. Maybe they won’t notice.”

“Doubtful,” I mumble. I bet the first person who’s going to notice is my partner.

Publisher: Tantor Audio⎮2020
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Series: Night Vigil, Book 1
Release date: Oct. 20, 2020

 We are the Night Vigil.

We keep the Vigil, looking for the ones who can still be saved, the ones who aren't too far gone. We're the misfits and the muck-ups, unwanted by Heaven or Hell, given one last chance to atone for all the mistakes and missed chances, the pain we've caused others and ourselves, the good things we were afraid to do, and the bad things we embraced with open arms.

Unfinished business ties us to the mortal world, to make atonement, find absolution, satisfy retribution, get things right. You won't find a sorrier group of halfway-house heroes. No illusions left - about ourselves, humanity, or what's really out there in the darkness. Just a purpose, to go down fighting the good fight. Because this is our last chance.

One final chance to make it right, the thin red line of humanity against the evil that goes bump in the night, your best hope to make it through the hour of the wolf.

When a series of disappearances, suicides, and vengeful spirits cause havoc and death along a remote interstate highway, demon-hunting ex-priest Travis Dominick teams up with former special-ops soldier and monster-hunter Brent Lawson to end the problem with extreme prejudice.

Creepy Pennsylvania--and Why I Love It

By Gail Z. Martin

Pennsylvania is a great state for a creepy story--which is why I’ve sent three series there with plenty of monster-hunting, demon-slaying action and adventure.
I grew up in Pennsylvania and while I moved away a while ago, I still love the state and visit often. That’s why I’m so intrigued by the darker sides of its history, and why I love poking into those shadowy corners when I’m writing.
Pennsylvania has thousands of miles of mining tunnels running throughout the state--but no map that shows where all those tunnels are. Mining has been big in PA since the 1700s, and in all that time, records were lost. Around the Pittsburgh area, where Sons of Darkness is set, it’s routine for homeowners to buy ‘mine subsidence’ insurance in case a sinkhole to a forgotten mine opens up and swallows their house, car, garage or yard.
Those forgotten mines have always intrigued me, because my writer brain is sure nothing good could be living down there, looking for a chance to come to the surface! Of course, the mines play a big role in Sons of Darkness, as well as the creatures that hide there.
Since Pennsylvania is one of the oldest states, there are plenty of abandoned buildings and ghost towns. Those might be from old railroad or mining operations, or just from changing transportation routes. But when I’m looking for haunted places, I’m going to start with real forgotten towns, and PA has a lot of them!
If you’ve ever driven across Interstate-80, you know that the whole top third of PA is forest. In many places, it’s hard to spot roads or towns or even utility lines--just endless, unbroken forest. Who knows what really lives out there? Plenty of places far removed from people means strange things could go unnoticed for a long time.
We lived in Pittsburgh for ten years, and I love the city for so many reasons. One of those reasons is how much of Pittsburgh’s history is still standing--old buildings, old neighborhoods, and odd little out-of-the-way things that you won’t find elsewhere. I love to bring things like that into books, and we definitely pull from some of Pittsburgh’s ‘hidden history’ in Sons of Darkness!
So come on an adventure with me and explore all those shadowy, forgotten, spooky spots. Don’t worry--you’ll have Travis and Brent to protect you!

Narrator Interview

  1. When did you know you wanted to be an audiobook narrator?
    1. I’ve always known I wanted to do something with my voice. I grew up hearing that I would be a great sports announcer or radio DJ, it wasn’t until a few years ago that I realized that narrating audiobooks was something I could try.  Got my first book and I’ve been hooked.
  2. How did you wind up narrating audiobooks? Was it always your goal or was it something you stumbled into by chance?
    1. It was something I stumbled onto.  My wife and I were watching House hunters and it happened to be the job of one of the hunters. So I googled it and found ACX and started learning!
  3. Did you find it difficult to “break into” audiobook narration? What skill/tool helped you the most when getting started?
    1. I did not find it difficult to get into narration.  Once I found the platform and the necessary equipment, it just took persistence and auditioning until I got my first gig.
  4. A lot of narrators seem to have a background in theatre. Is that something you think is essential to a successful narration career?
    1. I don’t think it’s essential, but I think it helps. I acted all through my school age and the ability to dive into a character helps especially for Fiction stories.

  1. What type of training have you undergone?
    1. Absolutely none, I took a crash internet course on how to use Audacity to record my tracks, but that is it.
  2. How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for narrating?
    1. I try to limit myself to a chapter a day. Unless there is a time crunch, I don’t like to burn myself just in the name of progress.
  3. Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    1. I am an audiobook listener. The draw of audiobooks to me was when I tried to read Lord of the Rings for the first time. There are so many unique words that I couldn’t figure out how to pronounce that listening to a professional helped me understand.
  4. What are your favorite and least favorite parts of narrating an audiobook?
    1. I don’t know if I have a least favorite, but my favorite part of narrating is just having my work out there.  Being able to say my voice brought someone’s story to life is awesome.
  5. What would you say are your strongest narration abilities?
    1. I would say my ability to identify tone changes with my inflections. As well as creating a complete character, and having the listener know who is talking at all times.
  6. Is there a particular genre you feel unsuited for? Have you ever declined a project because you didn’t think you were right for it?
    1. I absolutely know I’m not one for erotic stories.

Despite the criminal’s efforts to cover his face, they had him on camera a few blocks away from the scene, ripping his mask off before heading down into the subway, and they were able to get a picture. The Bergen County police were able to match it to the suspect in Casey Keane’s murder.
Will left the office feeling like they were finally making real progress and with a copy of the photo in his hand. He just wasn’t happy about what had happened to Cameron to get them there. If she’d been killed, well, he didn’t even want to think about it. He’d had a good time talking with her the night before. No, it was more than good. Sharing a drink with her was easy but exciting as well. She was interesting and thoughtful in a way it seemed most people weren’t. He couldn’t imagine her dead. Especially not because of a case he couldn’t solve.
Cameron was still sitting where he’d left her, smiling and drinking a soda with a young officer.
“Time to go,” he said abruptly, not even glancing at the other man.
“All right, let me just grab my stuff.” She reached down to straighten the messenger bag she always carried for work.
“Your stuff?”
“Yeah, my bag,” she replied, looking puzzled at his tone, holding the strap up for him to see.
He blinked, unable to process what she had said for a moment. “Let me get this straight. A man is shooting at you, you’re literally running for your life, and you stopped to grab your purse?”
“Hey, man,” the officer put in. “Go easy on her. She’s had a rough morning.”
Will’s entire body stiffened, and he moved nothing but his head. He looked like a really tall owl as he turned to face the man. “Go away.”
The officer must have read something on his face because without another word, he turned and walked away.

A few years after My Blood Runs Blue and Blue Blood for Life were written, I was finding that many people had the same question. They couldn’t understand why Kristin had chosen the way she did in the first book. To answer that question, I wrote a novella that went back in time to show what transpired between Calista, Julian, Alex and Damon.
A lot of people who read that novella now go, Oh! Okay. I’m still not crazy about her choice, but I understand it! Now it makes sense.
So when you step back in time, you get the opportunity to see Calista and the love she had for both Alex and Julian, and you see her death. But more importantly, you see why she choose who she did at the end of My Blood Runs Blue. Put all the chemistry aside, this was who Calista should have been with from the beginning.
