So who am I?
Well, I’m the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn’t love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nights I would stay up reading Nancy Drew by flashlight under the covers until my parents yelled at me to go to sleep.
Now, I live in a small town in West Virginia where I entertain my niece and nephew and watch the cats get teased by the birds and laugh myself silly when they swoop down and then dive back up just out of reach. The cats start yelling something fierce…lol.
I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.

Title: The Omen of Stones
Author: Casey L. Bond
Genre: YA Fantasy
Editor: Stacy Sanford/ The Girl with the Red Pen
Cover & Trailer Designer: Melissa Stevens/ The Illustrated Author Design Services
Publication Date: March 13th, 2020
Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR
Blurb: Spirit and Stone. Song and Sky. Fate and Future all align.
On my seventeenth birthday, I finally heard Fate’s voice. He whispered to me again and again, insisting I find the Omen of Stones. Having never heard of such lore, I thought I could ignore his pleas. The Summer Solstice proved otherwise. Being surrounded by fellow witches worked my magic up into a powerful swell that crashed and churned within me. As the energy crackled through my veins, I shunned my royal duties to follow the call of my heart.
Venturing beyond the safety of the Kingdom’s borders, I felt Fate nudging me toward a destiny I was eager to claim. Confidence in my craft blinded me from the ominous clouds of danger that roiled on the horizon.
Captured by purists dead-set on purging the Kingdom of magic and witches, my salvation came in the form of a mysterious girl who wielded stones like daggers. Something about her called to me, whispering we were stronger together, strong enough to stand against the dark forces threatening to crush my kingdom. Trusting Fate could jeopardize my heritage and my throne, but defying him could cost Omen’s life.

Interview with Melissa McPhail

Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
I was thrilled when Podium contacted me with an offer to publish my series in audio format. One of the most interesting parts of the process has been going through each book and pulling out words and nomenclature that are unique to my world and its magic system in order to catalog their pronunciations.
Sometimes I had only heard those words in my head up to that point. Trying to pronounce them for Nick Podehl, my incredibly talented narrator, sometimes proved challenging. I had to practice saying the names aloud so I could correctly show Nick how to say them.

Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
In my (admittedly limited) experience, a simple story can be made interesting if the narrator really knows his business, while even the most lyrical writing can be ruined by a narrator who doesn’t sound interested in the material.
As with any art form, when you translate it from its original medium into another one, the translator really needs to be an artist himself. Nick Podehl has an amazing talent with voices, as well as an ability to interpret and present the correct emotion for each character. My series would not have done nearly as well read by a less talented (or less passionate) narrator.

Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
Sadly not! I might’ve come up with much less complicated names if I had been thinking about someone having to speak them aloud—LOL.
A major factor in my name choices is how the word looks on the page. The spelling as much as the sound of the name imparts a certain feeling to the character. The spelling is critical, in fact, to my concept of the character.
The reader both sees and hears the word in their minds. If I had been writing specifically with audio in mind, I might have named some characters differently.

How did you select your narrator?
I trusted Podium to find the best narrator to bring my story to life, and I cannot now imagine anyone else but Nick Podehl as the voice of my series.

How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
As I mentioned above, I sat down with a Podium producer and walked through all the names, titles, cities and magical nomenclature specific to my world. This enabled Nick to know how to say the names properly.

Because I have so many diverse peoples and cultures in my world, we also discussed types of accents and inflections that might influence the way Nick could portray the character. With that said, all I really did was give him some guidelines. Nick did the heavy lifting in bringing my words and characters to life.

Were there any real-life inspirations behind your writing?
A number of books significantly impacted me as a teenager, in part because of my age upon first reading them, and in part because of the things that were happening in my life at the time. These experiences showed me how profoundly stories can influence our lives for the better.
I write allegorical fantasy because I want to share the philosophical truths I’ve found through my own studies of philosophy and comparative religion, but I want to present these ideas in a way that doesn’t preach, isn’t political and has no personal agenda.
Sometimes we read stories that hit too close to the mark in our own lives. We don’t want to think about those problems, and we reject any inherent truth the story has to offer.
The value of allegorical fantasy is that it’s generally just far enough removed from our own lives to be able to look at a character’s struggles, see that their path is similar to our own, but still find hope or encouragement in the way the character is handling those trials.
It’s important to me with my writing to present philosophical ideas in a way that others can compare them to their own lives without feeling endangered by the ideas. They can see events from a different perspective and determine if the characters’ ideas and ways of handling things could also be true for them.
It’s hugely rewarding to me when readers write to tell me that they’re using some piece of philosophy from my books in their daily lives, or that a particular character’s struggle has helped them overcome or in some way feel more capable of dealing with their own life challenges.
Ultimately, it’s important to me to present ideas of hope, courage, honor, and most of all, causative action, through the experiences of my characters.

How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
For me, writing is a calling. It’s my passion and my first love. I wouldn’t want to envision life without this means of communicating my ideas and thoughts to others.
I think because of this, I’ve never experienced burnout, but my yoga background has also helped me to know the importance of finding balance in our lives. Finding balance is a key theme in my life and in my series.

Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
I absolutely adore listening to non-fiction in audio format. My writing is heavily informed by world history, and I continue to be an avid student of it.
I’ve been making my way through the Great Lectures series, learning about everything from the impact of the Black Death on the Renaissance to the true history of secret societies. Being able to learn about important events in world history while doing my housework or taking a walk is one of the greatest inventions since sliced bread, as far as I’m concerned.

Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
You would have to ask this of the many readers of mine who have both listened to and read the series, often multiple times.

If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
I would save the Library of Alexandria.

Lynn's Review ~ The Book Of The Claw by Eric Asher

Eric Asher is the BEST WRITER EVER! His world building and character development is superb.  The Vesik Series was no where near my radar but a friend recommended I give it a shot. So, I snagged  a boxset of the first 3 from Audible.
Picture
This is where my love affair with audiobooks started.  I flew through the 29 hours of audio. The narrator William Dufris painted such a vivid picture and I could not get enough of the series and the characters.  This went on for months until I completed all the audio books available at that time.  That brings me to today's review of The Book of the Claw (#10 in the Vesik Series).  The series now has a new narrator, (Dufris had to bow out due to health issue but I wish him  the best,) Erin Moon. Y'all...the books and the narration just keep getting better!  I don't read the books. I wait for the audiobooks because I love the narrators work so much.
Finger crossed author Eric Asher will be going me for #FangirlThursday in late Sping! ~ Lynn

Fire and Water fight back.

Sophia

The battle for Orenda Academy has begun. The Elders have spoken, and the tribe is divided. The only way to reverse what’s happened is to take a stand.

We’ve started a smuggling operation to help students escape the castle, but it could cost us our lives. The prophecy is about to come true, and we’re desperate to change the course of this war.

The Air piece of the prophecy is our last hope. If we don’t find it, we won’t know what’s coming— or how to prevent the end.

Liam

The tribe’s darkest hour has come. Students labeled as “weak” have been subject to persecution. Sophia and I are no exception. The Elders consider us a threat— but they don’t know just how great of a threat we are.

An underground revolution is taking place. My father has set out to undermine the Elders, and he’s asked for my help. Information is needed, and to get it, I’ll have to become a spy, and risk execution.

In the middle of it all, I’m about to pop the question. I just hope I survive long enough to ask Sophia to marry me.

***

The race to stop the prophecy becomes more crucial as Liam and Sophia’s world falls under a dictatorship. Forbidden love is put at risk as espionage, secrets, and murder threaten to bring the end to the Elementai forever. Fans of Harry Potter and The Hunger Games will become addicted!

This is a full-length novel over 500 pages. Recommended reading age 16+

This series just keeps getting more and more intense! I was slow getting into this one but once the action started, holy crap! I was hooked. I did not see these twists and turns coming. By the end I was almost in tears. I am happy that I was able to dive right into the next one!

Length: 16 hours 23 minutes
Publisher: Podium Publishing⎮2016
Genre: Science Fiction
Series: Expeditionary Force, Book 1
Release date: Dec. 13, 2016

Nominee, 2018 Audie Awards — Audiobook of the Year

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news.
The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the Native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon came ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There went the good old days, when humans got killed only by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits.

When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved. The UN Expeditionary Force hitched a ride on Kristang ships to fight the Ruhar wherever our new allies thought we could be useful. So, I went from fighting with the US Army in Nigeria to fighting in space. It was lies, all of it. We shouldn't even be fighting the Ruhar; they aren't our enemy. Our allies are.

I'd better start at the beginning.

INTERVIEW
If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the  primary roles?
Fans have asked what aliens in the books look like, and my answer is they look like whatever the art director if the TV series thinks they look like. Same with casting actors. Whatever I say will get someone upset. The ‘Expeditionary Force’ Facebook page has many fans who argue about that subject.
What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
I would say nothing. Actually, I would say ‘Umm’ and smile and nod politely, and then never speak to them again during their sad, lonely little lives. The world is full of idiots, never waste your time arguing with them.
How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
By hitting the ‘Send’ button to email the manuscript to Podium. Then I clean my laptop, open a new Word document and start the next book. Usually my wife and I also go out for a nice dinner.
What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump?
My wife shows me that we have to make a mortgage payment at the end of the month. I find that very inspiring.
In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
Writing a series can be easier because you already know the world and the characters. It can be more difficult because with each book, you have to keep that world and those characters fresh and interesting. With Expeditionary Force, I am writing to a series outline, so it is really like writing a really long book. Really long, like the books you were forced to read over the summer in high school.
Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
Not yet. I think about them constantly while I’m awake.

About the Narrator: R.C. Bray
From an early age Audie, Earphones, and SOVAS Voice Arts Award-winning audiobook narrator R.C. Bray despised reading. Truly hated it with a passion.
And audiobooks? Even worse. Those were for people too lazy to read (not to be confused with those like himself who didn’t want to read to begin with).
R.C. eventually got older and wiser (he was always good-looking) and eschewing his capricious convictions fell head-over-heels with reading. Not just to learn words like “eschew” and “capricious” so he could use them in a bio line, but because someone was actually going to give him money to do it.

What prompted children of the 50s to become the revolutionaries of the 60s
When I was in high school in Canada in 1964, girls wore girdles and stiff bras that made sure no flesh jiggled. If we admitted to having sex, even if we were in a long term relationship, we were called sluts and our reputations were ruined. By the time I turned 20, the culture had made a radical shift. The plays “Hair” and “Oh Calcutta” celebrated the human body and promoted a we-are-all-one philosophy that encouraged sexual connections.
Many people think Hippies were spoiled children with nothing to do but party and shirk responsibilities, and yes, some kids did hitch a ride on the movement just for the fun of it. But the cultural revolution, starting with the Beat generation, was battling an unjust, hypocritical society. The glorified 50s painted a picture of the gentle, fair, loving patriarch, and the stay-at-home mom who wanted nothing more than to serve her family. In fact, many men were molesting children without consequence, persecuting people different in color or sexual preference, cheating on and sometimes beating their wives. Housewives, forced into a life of drudgery, took valium and sleeping pills to help them through the long, tedious days. The white, all male government was sending our boys to Vietnam.
In any culture, people will follow the rules they learn from childhood. These tenets are so ingrained, they become conditioned responses. We used LSD to unchain our psyches from convention. On Acid, we saw the life in front of us unencumbered by what our parents had taught us.
When my father was out of work as an auto body repairman, we survived on Welfare. Not all that bad for us kids because my mother made sure we were fed. But I watched Mum’s helpless decline and vowed that would never be me. I bought a motorcycle and left my home town, not knowing or caring about the dangers I would encounter. By age 20, I had only learned how to play baseball and shoot pool. No music lessons, no working skills. I wanted to learn and experience everything -- rush fearlessly into the only life I had been given.

When she was not tagging along with her father into music city staples like the Blue Bird or riding her mother's Arabians at breakneck speeds over the Tennessee countryside she was writing short stories and poems.
Her passion for words grew and in 2013 Stacy released her first book, Under his Protection (revised with an additional 25k words and re-released in 2020), that raced up Amazon's charts landing at #2 in the US and #1 in the UK.
Stacy currently lives in historic downtown Franklin TN where she writes by day and teaches ballroom dance in the evenings.
She is obsessed with old houses, good literature, and boogie boarding.

The sound of thundering hooves trampling over the earth brought Alex’s mind right back to the present. All three men jerked their heads toward the intrusion. A bay steed burst through the bush carrying a wild-eyed girl. Her beautifully carved slender legs were exposed up to her knees and she was missing one of her slippers.
The horse immediately sensed the wolf and reared straight up. Surprisingly, the bareback rider managed to hug tight to the beast’s neck and stayed on. As the front hooves made contact with the ground—and before the horse could rise in protest again—the girl catapulted off the side and unsuccessfully grabbed for the reins. The mare bolted away.
“Damn!” she said, simply annoyed, as if she had lost a shilling rather than a thoroughbred.
“What on earth!” Perkin’s previous calm appearance all but shattered into a thousand pieces in front of them.
“Is that a wolf?” The girl’s sites fixated on Malikite, a glint in her bright eyes, her breathing coming hard, causing her small breasts to rise and fall, threatening to escape a much-too-slack bodice.
Alex stared. Who on earth had helped this poor woman dress? Clearly a dressing-maid with a vengeance. Unless the young lady before them was newly escaped from the asylum. Which might explain the entry.
The girl was completely disheveled. A twig dangled from her raven-black curls. Windblown pink cheeks decorated her milk-white skin and a bead of perspiration highlighted her cupid-bow lips. Her eyes were like the palest green of the sea, and they raged as wild as a developing storm. Never in his wildest dreams had he ever thought a woman could be this...inspiring. Captivating. Alive! She had to be from the asylum, Alex concluded. Someone’s daughter or young bride that had lost her wits and had to be committed.
Still, she was magnificent, albeit likely touched in the head. Alexander felt a stir in his fawn-colored trousers. He tried to retrieve his thoughts from their rapid downward descent. He could have any woman in London and had turned down half of them in the past month alone due to a lack of interest. Now here he was, the Duke of Ravenswood, in the middle of the park getting brought to life by a lunatic. Gone completely was the conundrum of the previous conversation with Perkin Kingston. The issue at hand now may well be his own dwindling sanity.

Character Profile

Picture
Name: Now, Madeleine Ross, known as Maddy. Then, Scarlet Butler.
Age: 24
Description: 5’ 9” gym fit body. Green eyes, long, dark brown hair, worn up or down. Some might call her promiscuous. She doesn’t, or at least didn’t.

Independent, she’s capable of looking after herself, and although she has a mysterious background she’s successfully reinvented herself as a good friend but something of a loner, even now living a double life, in more ways than one. Loyal to her few friends, she’ll do whatever it takes to protect them.
she loves reading, eating and sex, although not necessarily in that order. She abhors small talk, likes steak with a friend, drinks red wine in public but bourbon in private. She has no pets, no plants, nothing that has to rely on her in order to stay alive but she has discovered a love of horses so who knows if that will change in the future?
