Twenty years have passed since terror swept through Ballynagual. But that doesn’t mean that evil is gone for good. There’s a serial killer running loose in town, not to mention I’m in love with a woman I can’t have, and she's in the crosshairs of the murderer.
Some people will die to protect their secrets. Others will kill to expose them.
Me? No worries. I just have to worry about dealing with the undead.
Iron and Salt is the suspenseful third book in the Bloodstone Quadrilogy by Calinda B. A dark fantasy series with tinges of horror and romance, prepare to be swept off your feet to a haunted landscape where dark creatures are real and forbidden desires come true.

Author Interview

  1. Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook. The process started out relatively simple. I just went onto ACX and listed the book book as being open for audition. Within a few weeks, the auditions started coming in. After that was when the real work began.
  2. Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format? Sometimes. I think it really depends on the book.
  3. Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing? I never considered turning Heart of Stone into an audiobook initially, but then I had readers asking for it.
  4. How did you select your narrator? I listened to the auditions and then I got in touch with Lacy. I had no idea how to go about the process, but Lacy was very forthcoming right from the get go. We got along immediately, which made it easy for me to choose her. Lacy is the one who suggested that we bring in a male narrator for the part of Alexander. She got in touch with a few for auditions, and I ended up choosing Jeffrey.
  5. How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters? I worked very closely with Lacy for this book. After every recorded chapter, I would give feedback on moods, emotions, character personalities, etc. In fact, I think I might have driven her crazy with the amount of feedback I gave her, but she denies it :)
  6. Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing? A little bit, but not much. For example, the guitar player that Alexander discovered in Venice is based on a real life experience. My husband and I stumbled upon this guitarist in Venice, Italy and fell in love with his music. La Biga is also a real place. It’s a little cafe across the street from the Colosseum in Rome.
  7. How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing? Burn-out should be my middle name right now...lol. But in all honestly, the readers are what keep me going. I have such loyal fans and they are what keep me burning the oil lamp late into the night.
  8. Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you? Other than Heart of Stone, I have never once listened to an audiobook. I should probably start...
  9. Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format? I think Lacy did a fantastic job with Krystina’s backstory. It was such an emotional chapter and I feel that her performance really shined in that part.
  10. If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go? A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
  11. If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the  primary roles? I did have two celebrities in mind when I was describing the character's appearance, although they were not my intention when I started out. It just sort of happened that way. For Krystina, I pictured Lacey Chabert with curly brown hair. I envisioned Ian Somerhalder for Alexander. As for how they would act out the roles, I didn’t think that far ahead.
  12. What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”? I don’t think it’s cheating. I think we live in a busy world. Finding time to sit down and read can be a challenge for some who love a great story. Listening to an audiobook is just another outlet for readers to get lost in the pages.
  13. How did you celebrate after finishing this novel? When I finished writing it, I didn’t celebrate. I panicked because I knew I would have to hit the “publish” button on Amazon. For the audiobook, I was more of a veteran by that point. I held a full blown party on Facebook for the audiobook release and held massive giveaways for the occasion. Then I poured a large glass of wine :)
  14. What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump? I can’t say that I’ve ever really had a prolonged writing slump. Music helps me to get through that. Time restraints are the biggest challenge I currently face, with both reading and writing.
  15. In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series? Oh, where to begin… Heart of Stone is book one in a trilogy. The second book has been released, but I’m still writing the third. Readers are constantly asking for a release date for book three - the pressure is real! It’s made me rethink my ideas on tackling another trilogy in the future. Sometimes I feel like one-and-done is the way to go. However, I love reading trilogies, so we’ll see.
  16. Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams? None of my characters have appeared in my dreams, but publishing issues or deadlines pop up on occasion in my sleep.
  17. What's your favorite:
    1. Food - anything Italian
    2.  Song - I have so many...I can’t choose just one!
    3.  Book - The Harry Potter Series
    4. Television show - It’s a toss up between genres. For comedy, Friends hands down. Re-runs are just as funny as when I watched it the first time. For drama, I can’t get enough of Game of Thrones. I’m slightly obsessed.
    5. Movie - Star Wars (all of them)
    6.  Band - Green Day
    7.  Sports team - Buffalo Sabres
    8.  City - Rome, Italy. It’s my most favorite place in the world.
  18. Are any of those things referenced in appearance in your work? Italian food, Star Wars, Rome, and Green Day were all mentioned in my books. Some of my favorite songs are on the book playlist as well (which can be found at the end of both Heart of Stone and Stepping Stone).
  19. What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors? Never give up. It’s hard work, but determination is key. I once read somewhere that 97% of writers don’t finish their book. I don’t know how true that is, but if that number is accurate, it makes me sad to think about all the great unfinished stories out there. Strive to be among the 3% of writers to become a published author.
  20. Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks? I recommend ACX for first timers. I also recommend establishing a good rapport with your narrator(s), as I think it helps with getting an accurate performance of the character personalities.
  21. What’s next for you? Set in Stone, book three in The Stone Series. I’ve had so much going on with the first two books, that I’m a little behind schedule with that book.

I started my first writing journal in 7th grade after a dream about my favorite boy band, New Kids on the Block. A dream also inspired the writing of The Life of Anna and Distorted Hope. I dreamed I was kidnapped with Adam Savage from Mythbusters and taken to Mexico. That dream ultimately morphed into the book now known as Distorted Hope.

I never set out to become a published author. I never imagined that there were other people out there with twisted minds like my own. But after sharing rough drafts of The Life of Anna, I decided to be brave and publish the first part of Anna's story, Enslaved. When The Life of Anna took off as it did, I was in complete shock. The success of the books humbled and encouraged me. I've made such good friends through my writing and I can't imagine ever stopping.

I write for myself, but always keep my reader's hearts in mind. I follow my characters' lead and sometimes they lead me into the darkness, but there's always light somewhere, if you look hard enough. There's always hope.

I love hearing from my readers. They keep me going; keep me writing. An author is nothing without a reader.

Author Interview

Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
When I wrote Six Days of Memories, audiobooks weren’t all that popular, so no, I didn’t think about that at the time.

At the time that I wrote this, I was a police detective, so Tasha was a little piece of me. I also previously studied martial arts, but my daughter was taking them at the time and worked herself up to Second Degree Black Belt before she retired at the age of 16.

Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
I love to listen to audiobooks, but I don’t have much time. I don’t read books at all anymore as I have an issue with my left eye, and I save my eyesight for my writing time. Listening makes it so much easier to enjoy a book.

What gets you out of a writing slump?
Moving on to another book. When I am having issues with one story, I will move on to a different one until the characters start to talk to me again. It is not unheard for me to have 2 or 3 books going at the same time.

In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
If you’re one of those people who love to lose themselves in a world, then a series is the way to go. I write both but do tend to write more series novels these days. I enjoy creating a new world and getting lost in it for a while. However, some stories don’t lend themselves to a novel, like Six Days of Memories. That story filled the pages of one novel, and while a few people would have enjoyed hearing more about the characters, I felt that their story was over for them.

Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
All the time. I work through scenes as I am falling asleep and many times I have dreamed of my characters while I slept. I have woken up many times knowing exactly where the next scene needed to go.

What’s next for you?
Right now, I am working on my publishing schedule for 2021. Currently, I have 16 books publishing in 2021, and I plan to finish the following Series: Loving a Young, The Unexpected Series. I hope to move them into audio next year. I’m also working on my series, the Rise Again Warrior Series and the third book in the series is coming out for that one in May.

Books you read last year...
As you might imagine, I am a fan of audiobooks. My actual “reading list” would be quite short. But here are 10 books I read and enjoyed last year:
  1. Currently listening to American Gods by Neil Gaiman. This 10th Anniversary edition features a full cast of narrators. It’s a well-written story by a master story-teller and the narrators are superb!
  2. Stuck by: Chris Grabenstein. A YA book about a kid who gets stuck at age 11. His family grows, his circumstances change, but he’s continually left at 11 years old. It’s a cute story with a somewhat unpredictable ending. Very enjoyable.
  3. 64th Man: Starring John Cena and Anna Chlumsky by: Bryan Tucker , Zack Phillips. I’m not a huge football fan so I didn’t think I’d enjoy this as much as I did. The description reads: “In sports, everybody loves redemption stories, the underdog who no one believes in but through sheer hard work wins it all. But no one tells the stories of the players who work hard and don’t make it. In pro football, fifty-three guys get on the roster. Ten make it to the practice squad. And then there’s the 64th Man—that’s Billy Logan (Cena), who seems to always be one spot from glory.”

I never thought about it, but it’s probably true. How many people catch the golden ring in their chosen professions? Not many, I’d guess. 64th Man is quite entertaining as Billy Logan seeks to find fulfillment in his passion – playing football. I found myself rooting for Billy and suffering his losses right along with him.
  4. I've Got My Eyes on You, by: Mary Higgins Clark. I found this murder mystery so predictable I basically knew what was going to happen before it happened, every step of the way. But, it’s well written so I kept on with it.
  5. A bunch of DNFs: Call Me Maybe, by Cara Bastone. If Angels Fall, by Rick Mofina. Good Grief by: Ngozi Anyanwu. Cemetery Boys by: Aiden Thomas. The Story Keeper by: Lisa Wingate. Thinner by: Stephen King. All great books, I’m sure, but they just didn’t capture my attention.
  6. Mission: Believe: Rise Again Warrior Series, Book 1 by: Stacy Eaton. An interesting, believable book about a guy who suffered major injuries in the war and now is trying to piece his life back together again.
  7. One in a Million: The Millionth Series, Book 1 by: Tony Faggioli. I enjoyed this story. It’s about a guy, Kyle, who has the perfect life. He screws up said perfect life by having an affair and finds himself in a situation he could never have prepared for—the woman was not your ordinary woman. It’s a supernatural tale of redemption and sin.
  8. Bella Bella, by Harvey Fierstein. An interesting story about Bella Abzug narrated by the great Harvey Fierstein. I learned a lot of interesting things about Ms. Abzug.
  9. Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel by: Carl Safina. This is a WOW piece of non-fiction about elephants and what they think and feel. A definite must read if you’re as into animals as I am. You’ll never look at an elephant the same way again.
  10. Bluff by: Michael Kardos. This book captured my attention. It was about a 27 y/o has-been magician who agrees to write an article on the art of cheating at cards. She finds her mark—the person she intends to write about, but then meets someone who offers her something far more intriguing: the chance to pull off a  $1.5 million magic trick. It got a little “slasher-esque” at the end, but the ending was unpredictable and satisfying.

Blurb:
Six months ago I died. And I’ve been looking for my killer ever since.

I didn’t expect to survive death, but here I am and I’ve got questions—lots of them. Questions that lead me to a world I never knew existed in the shadows of the mundane. When I come face to face with a vampire who seems to have the answers I’m looking for, I find myself trapped in a game where I’m the pawn.

Someone is hunting me. No one is safe until I’m caught, but I refuse to be the prey. When the hunter becomes the hunted, they’ll learn I’m not as naïve as they think. That is, until the mastermind is revealed and nothing is ever the same again.

Will I be able to reclaim my old life? Or is the game just getting started …

NOW LIVE!

Slowly, a young, blonde-haired angel entered the hall. She bit her lip as her nerves seemed to get the best of her. Her blue eyes were filled with hope as Gunther reached out his hand to guide her to the pedestal on which he now stood. She tried to not to look around at all the other members.

“Amanda,” Gunther said to her. “Are you ready for this?”

“Yes, Gunther. I am familiar with Avery Snow and am prepared for this task.” Smiling, she stood tall. Anyone in the room could see she was nervous but also, behind all of that, she was brave and strong. Gunther took his hand and placed it on Amanda’s left wing.

“You are now a guide, Amanda. Your duty is to selflessly guide this one and only soul. Keeping her on her path, without showing yourself,” he explained, his voice strong and stern. “If you do so you will be punished. Your pure, white wings will discolor and change. Let it be known from this day forward that you are now the guide of Avery Snow.” He took his hand from her wing and everyone clapped in pride of Gunther’s choice. Amanda followed the other guides out of the room to get ready for her departure. It was New Year’s Eve on Earth and her work would be starting tonight.
